Syria Opposition fails to elect new Prime Minister

Syria’s main opposition bloc failed to agree on a prime minister during a weekend summit in Turkey, participants said, the latest setback for a coalition long beset by internal divisions.

A member of the National Coalition who declined to be named said the biggest dispute at the Istanbul meeting centered around a split between the favored candidates of vital funders Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

“A computer interface that is intelligent enough to interact with humans can detect user emotions and change its behaviour accordingly,” wrote researchers from the Islamic University of Technology in Bangladesh in the study.

Krishan Gopal named new RSS co-ordinator for BJP

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has named its joint general secretary Krishna Gopal as its new pointsman for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), replacing Suresh Soni who was not said to be on best of terms with the party’s top brass.

The RSS top functionaries took the decision to appoint Gopal who had extensively worked in coordination with the BJP in key states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar during Lok Sabha polls.

“The RSS has decided to appoint Krishna Gopal as the party’s new Coordinator to deal with the party (BJP),” All- India Prachar Pramukh of RSS Manmohan Vaidya said.

PM Modi satisfied with India-Canada ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed satisfaction at the comprehensive nature of bilateral ties between India and Canada and called for engagements in areas of trade, investment, energy and healthcare.

At a meeting with visiting Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird and International Trade Minister Ed Fast, Modi welcomed close cooperation between the two countries and expressed satisfaction at ties, including in areas of economic cooperation, agriculture, security, civil nuclear energy, education, and science and technology.

EC notice to Raj Thackeray for remarks against non-Maharashtrians

The Election Commission today issued a show cause notice to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray for his alleged remarks against non-Maharashtrians and claiming that once his party comes to power, their entry in the state will be barred.

Issuing him a notice for prima facie violating the model code of conduct, the EC gave Raj time till October 15 morning to respond to it, failing which the poll body will take a decision without further reference to him.

Power supply to Imran Khan’s house cut over non-payment of bills

Power supply to cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan’s palatial residence was cut off today by a Pakistani firm over non-payment of electricity bills amounting to over Rs. 1,00,000.

The Islamabad Electric Supply Company (Iesco) cut off power supply to Mr Khan’s Bani Gala residence. An official of the company said that Mr Khan had three power connections, two for the main residence and a third for a tube-well.

Geo reported that the amount of non-paid bills was over Rs. 1,00,000. Earlier, the company had sent a notice warning of cutting the supply if the bills were not cleared.

We have no objection to shift Jayalalithaa to Tamil Nadu: Karnataka Home Minister

Karnataka Government will have no objection to shift AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa to Tamil Nadu from a jail here if the neighbouring state makes a request through courts, Home Minister K J George said today.

“If there is a proposal coming before the court from the Tamil Nadu government, we have no objection to shifting (Jayalalithaa),” George told PTI here.

Retail inflation at 6.46% in Sept, lowest since Jan 2012

Providing respite to common man ahead of Diwali, falling food prices pulled down the September retail inflation to 6.46 percent, lowest since the new series of Consumer Price Index was released in January 2012, although experts do not see a rate cut by RBI any time soon.

Although retail inflation, which has been on decline since July, is below the RBI target of 8 percent by January 2015, experts said the central bank is expected to reduce interest in the next fiscal (2015-16) only.

Asserting that the problem of terrorism in India was imported, President Pranab Mukherjee has said indigenous terrorist activity was “extremely negligible” with hardly any involvement of the 150 million Muslims of the country.

“Of course there may be one or two out of hundred fifty million but all of these are imported. These are coming from outside. Indigenous terrorist activity in India is extremely negligible and whenever such signs are visible we take appropriate steps,” he said in interviews to the Norwegian media ahead of his two-day state visit to Norway.

Domestic car sales decline 1.03% in September

Domestic passenger car sales declined 1.03 per cent to 1,54,882 units in September from 1,56,494 units in the year-ago month.

Motorcycle sales last month climbed 19.34 per cent to 10,56,509 units from 8,85,309 units a year earlier, according to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

The total two-wheeler sales in September rose 23.81 per cent to 15,67,351 units.

Sales of commercial vehicles rose 8.59 per cent to 56,140 units in September, SIAM said.

Several Palestinians hurt in clash with Israeli soldiers

Several Palestinians were injured and one was arrested Monday in clashes with Israeli soldiers in the West Bank city of Nablus, Palestinian security sources told the local Maan news agency.

Thirty five Israeli military vehicles entered Palestinian territory to escort a group of about 300 Jewish pilgrims who came to pray at the funerary monument, Joseph’s Tomb, the sources added.

Palestinian youths threw stones, bottles, petrol bombs and other objects at the convoy of buses and armoured vehicles.

Bihar shutdown over gang rape hits rail, road traffic

The shutdown called by the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) to protest the gang rape of six women in Bihar’s Bhojpur district hit rail and road traffic, police said Monday.

CPI(M-L) workers and supporters blocked railway tracks, thereby affecting half a dozen trains while disrupting road traffic since early Monday morning.

A district administration official said the shutdown evoked mixed response with normal life in Ara, district headquarters of Bhojpur, partially hit.

Earning from tourism up by 4.6 pc: Naik

The foreign exchange earning from tourism has gone up by 4.6 percent in comparison with the last year, Union Tourism Minister Shripad Yasso Naik said here today hoping that measures like tourist visa on arrival and electronic travel authorisation would considerably contribute to the earnings.

“Foreign exchange earning from tourism during January to August 2014 was USD 12.739 billion with a growth of 4.6 per cent compared to the corresponding period in 2013,” Naik said at a function here.

A revolutionary new bionic eye implanted into a 66-year-old blind man in the US has allowed him to ‘see’ for the first time in 33 years.

Larry Hester was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa when he was in his early 30s. At the time, the degenerative disease that would rob his sight was poorly understood, and there were no known treatments, researchers said.

On October 1, 2014, Hester became only the seventh person in the US to have a so-called bionic eye – an Argus II Retinal Prosthesis Device – activated as a visual aid to send light signals to his brain.
