Female students protest as Bihar madrasa bans admission to girls

A government-affiliated madrasa in Bihar has banned admission for girls as there is no separate sitting arrangement for them and co-education is against the Islamic tenets, officials said on Tuesday.

Madrasa Azizia in Bihar Sharief, district headquarters of Nalanda, about 100 km from here, has issued a diktat that girls will not be enrolled and those already enrolled will not be allowed into the premises.

Director Vijay Kumar Konda, who is currently awaiting the release of Telugu romantic-comedy “Oka Laila Kosam”, hopes that his film will surpass the success of the recent blockbuster “Manam”.

Actor Akkineni Naga Chaitanya has played the lead in both the films.

“When I started working on my first film ‘Gunde Jaari Gallanthayyinde’, Nithiin’s ‘Ishq’ was running in theatres, and it turned out to be a blockbuster. I wanted to beat ‘Ishq’ with my film and I succeeded at it. Now, as I await the release of my film, I’ve set ‘Manam’ as my target,” Konda told IANS.

Indian woman on trial for killing husband in Bahrain

An Indian woman, accused of killing her husband while he was asleep by stabbing him 30 times in front of their minor daughter, appeared in court, media reported Wednesday.

The 28-year-old woman killed her husband Siraj Al Din Ebrahim at their home in Manama in April this year, Gulf Daily News reported.

The woman has been charged with pre-meditated murder and prosecutors argue she planned the attack in advance.

She appeared at the High Criminal Court Tuesday.

IndiGo places single largest order of 250 Airbus A-320neos

Private airline IndiGo Wednesday announced signing a deal for 250 Airbus A-320neo aircraft – making it Airbus’ single largest order by number of aircraft.

The Memorandum of Understanding for Airbus’ leading single aisle aircraft family was signed by its co-founders Rakesh Gangwal and Rahul Bhatia, group managing director of InterGlobe.

IndiGo President Aditya Ghosh said that the new aircraft would enable the airline to continue bringing its low fares and hassle-free service to more customers and markets, besides creating more jobs and growth.

US Supreme Court blocks Texas abortion law

The US Supreme Court has blocked a Texas state law that reduced the number of abortion clinics in the nation’s second most populous state, media reported Wednesday.

The Texas abortion law was implemented June 11, 2013, the Washington Post reported.

The law banned abortion at 20 weeks post-fertilisation and shut down 13 abortion clinics all over Texas.

The Supreme Court’s order announced Tuesday night, will allow more than a dozen of the clinics to resume operation, according to the Centre for Reproductive Rights, the group that challenged the law.

Ten-year-old Sadiq wanted to be police commissioner for a day and his wish was fulfilled by Hyderabad Police Commisisoner Mahender Reddy Wednesday.

Clad in khaki with a cap, the terminally ill boy occupied the chair of the police commissioner while Mahender Reddy and other officers saluted him.

The boy hailing from Karimnagar district of Telangana was inspired by some of his relatives working in police department and aspired to become the police chief.

Although rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, high doses of fish oil supplements do not reduce atrial fibrillation, a common type of irregular heartbeat, found a study led by an Indian-origin researcher.

“Fish oil has no role in the rhythm-control management of atrial fibrillation,” said lead investigator Anil Nigam, associate professor at the University of Montreal.

Ignou in talks with Prasar Bharati after Gyanvani stopped

Ignou on Tuesday said it is in talks with Prasar Bharati to resolve its stand-off with All India Radio which has taken all 37 Gyanvani educational FM radio stations off the air, depriving many students of getting access to informal education.

The stations were taken off on October 1 due to non-payment of outstanding dues to the tune of Rs 21.64 crore by Ignou.

A 29-year-old man from Bhiwandi taluka in Thane has been arrested for allegedly abducting and abusing a teenage girl on her way to school, police said on Wednesday.

The accused Nasif Imtiaz Momin was arrested last night after he kidnapped the girl on October 11 from an autorickshaw which ferried her to an Urdu school, EN Kharik of Bhiwandi taluka police station told PTI.

India bans import of cosmetics tested on animals

Months after announcing a ban on testing of cosmetics on animals, India has banned import of such products and become the first ‘cruelty-free’ cosmetics zone in South Asia.

Humane Society International, an NGO which had been campaigning for it, said government inserted a new rule 135-B in Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, banning import of such products.

“No cosmetic that has been tested on animals after the commencement of Drugs and Cosmetics (Fifth Amendment) Rules, 2014 shall be imported into the country,” the official notification said.

Actor-producer Vishnu Manchu has decided to postpone the release of Telugu comedy “Current Theega”, which was originally slated to release Friday, in order to extend help to the cyclone-hit victims in Andhra Pradesh.

Vishakhapatnam is one of the cities worst affected by the cyclone ‘Hudhud’.

“This is not a moment for entertainment; we would like to standby and extend help to those affected by the nature’s fury by using our resources to the maximum possible extent,” Vishnu said in a statement.

Over 16,000 candidates qualify civil services preliminary examination

Over 16,000 candidates have qualified civil services preliminary examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission, the results of which were declared on Tuesday in a record 50-day time.

As many as by 4,52,334 candidates appeared for the examination on August 24.

“Of these, 16,933 candidates have qualified to appear in civil services (main) examination,” UPSC Secretary Ashim Khurana said.

He said there was an increase of 40 per cent in the number of students appearing in this year’s examination than last year for which 3,24,279 aspirants sat for the test.

Telangana gets SC’s ire for bias in EAMCET

The Telangana government was biased by not allowing some engineering colleges to participate in Eamcet counselling and disallowing others, the Supreme Court said.

AS per SC, the government had failed to provide equal opportunity to all engineering colleges.

The Apex court directed the Telangana government and JNTU Hyderabad to put forward their affidavits by Friday, specifying the context and reasons for not granting affiliation to 174 engineering colleges and the amenities that other colleges had shown which had made them eligible for admitting students.

First coaching centres for IAS launched in Hyderabad

A new IAS institute in Telangana Study Circle was launched by Justice Konda Madhava Reddy Foundation in association with Captain Lingala Pandu Ranga Reddy, founder of Hyderabad Study Circle, one of the first coaching centres to cater to the aspirants of civil services.

“The institute will charge minimal fees, considering the fact that Telangana is a developing State,” Ranga Reddy said.

There will be focus on the Telangana State Public Service Examination, apart from offering coaching for the civil services aspirants, the notification for which will be coming out anytime soon.
