Man who killed 39 people attempts suicide in Brazil jail

The confessed murderer of 39 people in the city of Goiania, capital of the central Brazilian state of Goias, tried to commit suicide in his jail cell using the base of a broken lightbulb, police said.

Thiago Henrique Gomes da Rocha, 26, tried to slit his wrists Thursday with the sharp metal but he was prevented from completing his attempt by a guard who managed to subdue him, the Civil Police chief of Goias, Eduardo Prado, who is one of those in charge of the investigation into the slayings, told Spanish news agency Efe.

UN says over 200,000 dead in Syria civil war

More than 200,000 people have died in Syria’s civil war since it started in March 2011, said new UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al-Hussein.

He said Thursday new statistics would be published shortly on the number of victims in the Syrian conflict and predicted that the updated death toll “will be well over 200,000”.

He added the UN mission to Iraq was also collecting information on the number of deaths from the conflict in northern Iraq, where the radical Islamic State (IS) terrorist group has seized vast areas of Iraqi territory, just as it has done in Syria.

Iran warns action if Pakistan fails to secure border

Iran will step in to contain terrorists if Pakistan fails to secure its borders and prevent terrorists from slipping into the country, media reported.

“Iran will step in to contain terrorists if Pakistan fails to secure border,” FARS news agency quoted Brigadier General Hossein Salami of Islamic Revolution Guards Corps as saying Thursday.

“Terrorists, wherever they may be, even on the soil of neighbouring countries, we will find them, and if they do not give up acts of terrorism, we will deal with them without reservation,” General Salami said.

Personalised vaccine to treat ovarian cancer

With a new way to identify protein mutations in cancer cells, an Indian-origin researcher has developed a technique to create personalised vaccines to treat patients with ovarian cancer.

“This has the potential to dramatically change how we treat cancer,” said Pramod Srivastava from University of Connecticut Health Center in the US.

The novelty of Srivastava’s approach in this new research is that it results in a drug specifically designed for a single person.

The new technique works in mice and a human test will start in late 2014.

Aloo Tikki Chaat

Ingredients:

Potatoes –3 medium [boiled and peeled]
Bread – 2 slice [cut the brown sides and use the white part only]
Cilantro – 2 tbsp finely chopped
Green chilies –2 finely chopped
Roasted Cumin powder – 1 tsp
Black pepper –1/2 tsp
Salt as per taste
Oil for shallow frying

Chole Ingredients:

Kabuli Chana or Chole [Garbanzo beans]dry – 1.5 cup
Tea bags- 2
Dry Ingredients for gravy:

Red chili powder – 1 tsp
Whole garam masala – 1 tbsp
Turmeric powder -1/2 tsp
Coriander powder – 1 tbsp
Garam masala powder – ½ tsp
Chana Masala -1.5 tbsp

Aloo Kachori

Ingredients:

• 1/2 kg Potatoes
• 100 grams Arrowroot
• 1 fresh Coconut (grated)
• 2-3 Green Chilies
• 1 tsp Cardamom powder
• 3 tsp Sugar
• 3 tbsp Lemon Juice
• Salt to taste

Procedure:

• To make kachori covering, first boil and mash the potatoes. Mix it with 50 grams arrowroot, salt and knead it into a stiff dough.
• To make the filling, mix the grated coconut with crushed green chilies, sugar, lemon, cardamom and salt.
• To make kachori, take a small portion of the dough and pat between palms to make a small puri.

Exercising three times a week cuts depression risk

A new study has demonstrated that people who are physically active three times a week are less likely to go under depression.

The study conducted at University College London (UCL) showed that people who increased their weekly activity reported fewer depressive symptoms but those with more depressive symptoms were less active, particularly at younger ages.

Prithviraj Chavan expresses regret over remarks on Adarsh scam

Embroiled in a controversy over his reported remarks about his predecessors and the Adarsh Society scam, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Thursday expressed “regrets”, saying it was an inadvertent mistake.

“It happened inadvertently. My chat after the interview was recorded. It was a mistake. I have expressed my regrets. What happened was wrong,” he told reporters on the sidelines of an event here.

Delhi: Woman from Mizoram found dead in hotel, case registered

A 24-year-old woman from Mizoram was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a house in south Delhi’s Munirka area last night.

The woman was taken to Safdarjung Hospital with serious head injuries where she was declared brought dead, police said on Friday.

“She was living with a man identified as Virender Singh since the last few months. His role is being ascertained,” said a senior police official.

Police have registered a case at Vasant Vihar Police Station and further investigations are on.

Apple Thursday unveiled its new iPad Air 2 calling it as the “world’s thinnest tablet” along with the new iPad Mini 3 while introducing its new Mac operating system, Yosemite X.

Introducing the latest gadgets at its new product event at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California, Apple CEO Tim Cook also announced that its new mobile payments system, Apple Pay, will launch Monday.

Sensex gains 66 points; capital goods stocks surge

A benchmark index of Indian equities markets Friday was trading 65.69 points or 0.25 percent up as capital goods stocks gained.

Good buying was observed in capital goods, banking, healthcare and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) sectors, while selling pressure was seen in IT and technology, media and entertainment (TECK) sectors.

Rupee up 19 paise at 61.64 against US dollar

The rupee recovered from over seven-month low by appreciating 19 paise to 61.64 against the US dollar in early trade on Friday at the Interbank Foreign Exchange on selling of the American currency by exporters and banks.

Forex dealers said besides fresh selling of the American currency by exporters and banks, a higher opening in the domestic equity markets supported the rupee but dollar’s strength agaisnt other curreices overseas, capped the gains.

Axis Bank cuts lending rate by 0.1% to 10.15%

Private sector Axis Bank on Thursday announced reducing its lending rate by 0.1 percent to 10.15 percent from 10.25 percent.

Its interest rate is now closer to the big three peers that have their minimum lending rates at 10 percent.

The new rates are applicable from October 15, the third largest private sector lender said in a statement today.

Omar questions Musharraf’s claim on Separatist Movement in J&K

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today questioned the claims that the separatist movement in the valley was indigenous in view of revelations made by former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf.

“So Pervez Musharaf believes Kashmir needs to be incited at regular intervals. What happened to this being ‘an indigenous struggle for azadi’ (freedom)?” Omar wrote on microblogging site Twitter.

Musharraf, in an interview to a TV news channel, had said Pakistan needs to “incite” those “fighting” in Kashmir.

The Delhi High Court Thursday gave over three months more to a convict to surrender before the trial court in the sensational case of attempt to assassinate the then Chief Justice of India A N Ray near the Supreme Court in 1975.

Santosh Anand Avdhoot, convicted along with Sudevanand Avdhoot, got the relief till January 19, 2015 when Justice Sudershan Kumar Misra will hear his plea challenging the order to surrender on the ground that he has been in “incarceration” for 14 years 10 months and five days.

All Citizens are Hindus, Says RSS

Govt. won’t tolerate racism: Rajnath Singh
