Fatty meals more harmful for males

A new study has found that consuming high-fat meals can prove more harmful for males than females.

Cedars-Sinai Diabetes and Obesity Research Institute scientist Deborah Clegg, PhD, and a team of international investigators found that the brains of male laboratory mice exposed to the same high-fat diet as their female counterparts developed brain inflammation and heart disease that were not seen in the females.

Pilots spot mysterious ‘flying man’ at 3,500ft

Pilots on a passenger plane recently spotted an unexplained “human UFO” or “flying man” at 3,500ft above the Cheshire countryside, it has been reported.

Aviation experts said that the ” flying man” dubbed as the Superman of Macclesfield, appeared from nowhere as the Airbus 320 passed the Cheshire town while it was coming in to land at Manchester Airport, the Mirror reported.

The pilot and first officer, who reported the sighting to air traffic control, thought the man was a paraglider but could not see a canopy. And the mystery deepened when there was no sign of him on radar.

Rajinikanth dubbed for ‘Lingaa’ in 24 hours?

Superstar Rajinikanth has dubbed for his upcoming Tamil film “Lingaa” at a lightning speed. He is said to have finished dubbing for it in less than 24 hours, much to the surprise of the film’s crew.

“Rajini sir recently completed dubbing for the film in less than 24 hours. Usually, dubbing takes a few days for most actors as it requires going over few lines in sync with the scenes. But Rajini sir finished dubbing most of his lines in one take,” a source from the film’s unit told IANS.

“Lingaa”, which is currently in post-production, is completed, but for two songs.

Jennifer Lopez finds it tough being a single parent

Singer-actress Jennifer Lopez feels it’s tough being a single parent to her six-year-old twins — Max and Emme, whom she has with singer Marc Anthony.

“Just like we need two people to create a child, it is easier to educate them as a duo. As a single parent, the only positive thing is that your children are all for you,” the 45-year-old, who separated from Anthony in 2011, said to Gala magazine, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

Lopez and Anthony started dating back in 2004, and got married that same year.

Lopez herself was brought up by divorced parents.

US prepared to confront challenge posed by Ebola: Obama

Allaying fears about spread of Ebola in the US, President Barack Obama today asserted that the country was not facing an outbreak of the deadly virus and it was fully prepared to confront the challenge posed by the disease.

Obama, in his weekly radio and web address to the nation, said he and his entire administration will continue to do everything possible to prevent further transmission of the disease domestically and to contain and end the Ebola epidemic at its source in West Africa.

Bihar CM clarifies ‘Chopping hands’ remark, calls it a Hindi idiom

Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi on Saturday said that his ‘chopping hands off’ comment was not literal, and added that he was using an idiom to say that he would restrict the powers of doctors if they treated patients unfairly.

“They should have knowledge about Hindi idioms, chopping off hands means restricting rights. I did not mean literally chopping hands off. By cutting hands, I meant restricting their powers,” said Manjhi.

NTPC to build 8,152 toilets under ‘Swacch Bharat’ campaign

State-owned power major NTPC has committed to build 8,152 toilets in government schools under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cleanliness drive.

“Under ‘Swachh Bharat-Swachh Vidyalaya Abhiyan’ NTPC has committed to take up work for 8,152 toilets in government schools from the list available on Ministry of Human Resource and Development website,” the company said in a statement.

A list of identified toilets spanning over 18 states and 57 districts has been given to the Ministry of Power for confirmation of allocation of these toilets to NTPC by HRD Ministry.

PM Modi needs to appoint a ‘proper’ defence minister, says Tariq Anwar

Commenting on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “invisible enemy” statement, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Tariq Anwar on Saturday said the Indian Government first needs a ‘proper’ defence minister for a better functioning army.

“Narendra Modi should look for a full time defence minister, as Arun Jaitley is a temporary defence minister. This position comes with a lot of responsibilities. However, till now, the Narendra Modi Government does not have a proper defence minister,” said Anwar.

Skill development programme held in Itanagar

A one-day long workshop on ‘Skill Development and Strategies for the Future’ was conducted recently in Itanagar by the Department of Skill Development, Government of Arunachal Pradesh.

Various vocational training providers from other states participated and briefed about the facilities of their institutions.

Pakistani Army chief General Raheel Sharif said Saturday that the resolution of the Kashmir issue was imperative for sustainable peace in the region.

Addressing a passing-out parade held at the Pakistan Military Academy in Kakul, the army chief said that the Kashmir issue should be resolved in the light of UN resolutions, Dawn online reported.

At least 20 people have lost their lives on both sides of the (Line of Control) LoC and the international boundary in recent skirmishes between the Indian and Pakistani armies.

UK announces first-ever Dadabhai Naoroji Awards

The UK government announced the inaugural Dadabhai Naoroji Awards to honour individuals who have worked to strengthen the UK-India relationship over the years.

The three winners included UK India Business Council chair Patricia Hewitt in the commerce category, Dame Asha Khemka for services in the field of education and actor Madhav Sharma for culture.

Khemka, who became the first India-born woman to be made a Dame in the New Year’s Honours List earlier this year, described the award as a “recognition for the entire Indian community in the UK”.

Pakistan Rangers Saturday resorted to unprovoked firing at Indian positions of the Border Security Force (BSF) on the international border in Jammu district, an official said.

“Pakistan Rangers resorted to unprovoked firing at the BSF positions in the R.S. Pura sector of the international border in Jammu district today (Saturday) morning,” a police officer told IANS here.

The officer said the firing started at 5.30 a.m. Saturday.

“They are using automatics and light arms and the BSF is retaliating effectively using same calibre weapons.

Vishakhapatnam airport becomes operational, Air India resumes flights

Woman delivers baby on the floor after Government Health Centre refuses to admit her without bribe

A woman gave birth to a child on the floor of a primary health centre after the staff allegedly refused to admit her without a bribe in Shamli district.

The incident occurred yesterday when the woman, Zubeda, was taken to a government primary health centre in Kandhla town after she complained of labour pain.

The woman’s family alleged she delivered the baby in the compound of the health centre after the doctors on duty refused to admit her, demanding a bribe as the price of admission.

Congress leader dies of gunshot wounds

Congress leader and former Ghaziabad municipal councillor Hari Mohan Kaushik died Saturday, two days after being shot at five times, hospital sources said.

Five bullets were pumped into his chest and the upper part of the body in Ghaziabad Thursday night. He was undergoing treatment at the Fortis Hospital in Noida, abutting Delhi, where he died around 7 a.m. Saturday.

Kaushik was also a real estate developer. There were three murder cases registered against him.

Smoking during pregnancy alters newborn’s DNA

Babies born to mothers who smoke during pregnancy may find it difficult to cope with stressors of daily life later due to an alteration in DNA of a gene that regulates passage of stress hormones from mother to foetus, a study says.

Newborns of such mothers show lower levels of stress hormones and lowered stress response, the findings showed.

“Our results suggest that these newborns may not be mounting adequate hormonal response to daily stressors,” said lead researcher Laura Stroud from The Miriam Hospital in Rhode Island.

26 die in Iraq triple bomb attacks

At least 26 people were killed and 96 injured Saturday in three car bomb attacks in Iraqi capital city of Baghdad.

A car bomb went off in eastern Baghdad, killing 14 people and wounding 50, a police official told Xinhua.

The second car bomb exploded in northern Baghdad`s Suleikh area about half an hour after the first explosion, which killed three people and injured 19, the official said.

The third car bomb detonated near the National Theater in central Baghdad`s Karrada district which killed nine people and injured 27, the official added.

Indian American doctor honoured

A top Indian American doctor who heads the prestigious Carnegie Mellon University, will be inducted into the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in recognition of his research into cell mechanics related to malaria, blood diseases and certain types of cancer.

Dr Subra Suresh, would be one of the only 16 living Americans to be elected to all three national academies — IOM, National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Engineering.

Suresh is the first Carnegie Mellon (CMU) faculty member to hold membership in all three academies.
