Bring back ‘special chance’ provision, students urge DU

After Delhi University last week allowed re-evaluation of answer sheets, students are now demanding that the varsity also bring back the ‘special chance’ provision which provides for additional time beyond the stipulated period for the completion of courses.

“The special chance option was of great help to students who could not finish their degrees within the stipulated period due to unavoidable circumstances like illness, socio- economic problems, etc.,” said Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) President Mohit Nagar.

Sisters eve-teased by truck driver and conductor

Two sisters were harassed by two truck operators when they were traveling with their family on Delhi-Dehradun National Highway near Vehelna village, police said today.

The incident took place yesterday when the victims were on their way to Bagowali village from Delhi with their family on the occasion of ‘bhaiya dooj’, SSP H N Singh said.

The accused, a truck driver and a conductor, identified as Dilshad and Naved, intercepted the victims’ car and harassed them.

Police said the duo has been arrested and strict action would be taken against them.

Women ethnic wear portal Ishi Maya to enter Bangladesh

Women’s ethnic wear e-commerce portal Ishi Maya will enter Bangladesh through a partnership with a local company to sell its merchandise in the neighbouring nation.

Vinayak Online Marketing Private Ltd, which sells merchandise from Gujarat, Rajasthan and West Bengal, through the Ishi Maya platform, will launch a dedicated portal for Bangladesh. It has tied up with Bangladeshi firm Karigari for the same.

Market capitalisation of top 8 cos surges by Rs 32,825 cr

The top eight most valued Indian companies together added Rs 32,825 crore in their market capitalisation (m-cap) last week, with ICICI Bank and ONGC witnessing the maximum rise in valuation.

Except Infosys and ITC, rest eight companies out of the top 10 Sensex companies saw rise in their m-cap, including TCS, RIL and CIL.

The m-cap of ICICI Bank surged Rs 8,182.5 crore to Rs 1,82,434.20 crore, while ONGC added Rs 5,347.18 crore to Rs 3,45,214.03 crore.

Electrolux targets Rs 500-cr sales from small appliances by FY17

Swedish consumer appliances firm Electrolux is targeting Rs 500 crore turnover from small appliances by fiscal 2017 as it expands products range in the country.

“We are a new entrant in the domestic market. We have spent last one year in understanding the market and developing products for India. We are looking at Rs 500 crore turnover by FY 2016-17,” Electrolux Kelvinator Small Appliances CEO Pramod K Khosla told PTI.

The company entered into small appliances category in India in October 2013 with the launch of select products under its powerbrand ‘Kelvinator’.

Man marries like prince, pays maintenance as pauper: Court

A man projects himself like a “prince” while entering into wedlock but turns a “pauper” when it comes to paying maintenance to his estranged wife, a Delhi court has observed.

The court stated this while enhancing the maintenance from Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000 per month to be given by the husband to his wife and their three school-going kids.

‘Be careful in slapping anti-dowry law in matrimonial dispute’

The Home Ministry has asked all state governments to be judicious in slapping the stringent anti-dowry section of IPC in matrimonial disputes as the provision may be used as “weapons rather than shields by disgruntled wives”.

In an advisory to the states and union territories, the Ministry has asked them to instruct their police officers not to automatically arrest a person when a case under Section 498-A of the IPC is registered but to satisfy themselves about the necessity for arrest under the parameters laid down flowing from Section 41, CrPC (When police may arrest without warrant).

Troubled actress Lindsay Lohan has posted a topless picture of herself on the photo-sharing website Instagram.

The 28-year-old actress took a selfie while she is topless, using her long red locks to cover her modesty, reported Ace Showbiz.

Auto driver gets 7-yr jail term for robbing army man

A 24-year-old auto driver has been sent to seven years in jail by a Delhi court for robbing and injuring his passenger, an army personnel, in 2011.

Additional Sessions Judge Anuradha Shukla Bhardwaj awarded the jail term to Delhi resident Mujahir for robbing Durga Rao, who had boarded his auto from ISBT for going to the New Delhi Railway Station.

Delhi’s Trilokpuri tense but no fresh clashes reported

East Delhi’s Trilokpuri area remained tense but no fresh violence was reported, police said Sunday, a day after five people were shot at during a communal clash.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ajay Kumar told IANS: “The situation is tense but under control. No fresh violence or clashes have been reported from the area.”

The police have detained around 70 people while section 144 (joining unlawful assembly) has been imposed in the area following late Thursday’s clash between two communities over Diwali rituals in Trilokpuri’s B-Block.

MHA tells NGOs to make payment exceeding Rs 20k through cheque

Tightening the noose around erring foreign-funded NGOs, the government has ordered that all voluntary organisations henceforth will have to make payments exceeding Rs 20,000 through account payee cheques or drafts.

The order came weeks after the Home Ministry found that over 10,000 NGOs receiving foreign funds have failed to submit their mandatory annual returns for three consecutive years from 2009.

Delhi Police registers 5.5 lakh complaints via mobile app

More than 5.5 lakh people have used a Delhi Police app for registering complaints for loss or theft of items like mobile phones, passports and PAN cards since its launch in February.

According to police, the ‘Delhi Police Lost Report’ app is aimed at sparing the people the trouble of physically going to the police station to get a complaint registered for such cases. A digitally-signed document is provided to the people who use the app to register cases which can then be used to get the document reissued.

125 Model Schools sanctioned by TS Govt

The Telangana government on Friday sanctioned 125 Model Schools. Post bifurcation of Government of Andhra Pradesh, 125 Model Schools are earmarked to Government of Telangana.

In view of that, the government issued GO 8 for setting up Model schools under phase-II in the state under the centrally sponsored scheme ‘Scheme for setting up of model schools at block level benchmarks of excellence.’

Pakistan has decided to introduce biometric machines at airports to check the use of fake passports, weeks after 10 Afghans were caught travelling on fake Pakistani passports at a London airport.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) agency decided to introduce new passport-reading technology at the Benazir Bhutto International (BBI) Airport here, the Dawn reported.

Three New Polio Cases Surface in Pakistan on Awareness Day

Three more polio cases have surfaced in Pakistan, increasing the number of new cases in the country to a record 220, the WHO said on Friday as countries across the globe observed World Polio Day to raise awareness about the crippling disease.

Most of the 220 cases were detected in the northwestern region which is control by Taliban who have banned immunisations, said Dr Elias Durry, who heads WHO’s polio eradication efforts in Pakistan.
