J&K polls: EC issues notification for first phase

The Election Commission on Tuesday issued notification for the first of the five phases of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly polls.

In the first phase due on November 25, polls will be held in 15 Assembly segments spread across seven districts of Bandipora, Ganderbal in Kashmir Valley, Kargil, Leh of Ladakh region, Kishtwar, Doda and Ramban of Jammu region.

Pakistan, Iran to strengthen border control

Pakistan and Iran have reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace along the border and agreed on new measures to strengthen border coordination and control, media reported Tuesday.

The agreement was reached at the eighth round of Pakistan-Iran Bilateral Political Consultations held in Islamabad Monday, Dawn online reported.

Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry and Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ibrahim Rahimpour led the delegations of their countries.

Google offers free access to satellite images

Tracking melting glaciers, deforestation or disappearing elephants has been made easier as Google has now allowed access to real time, updated satellite images through its Skybox programme.

“The fresh satellite imagery will be contributed to projects that save lives, protect the environment, promote education, and positively impact humanity,” Google said in a blog post.

From camps for displaced people in Sudan to beaches cleared of landmines in Sri Lanka, the released images are also available to the public for free.

Sword fight in ‘Action Jackson’ made Ajay work hard

Ajay Devgn will be seen doing a sword fight sequence in his upcoming film “Action Jackson”, and the actor says it was after a long time that he had to put in a lot of practice for the action scenes.

“There is a very stylised sword fighting designed by Prabhudheva, and after a very long time, I had to even practice to do action. So it has come out very nicely,” the 45-year-old said here Monday at a press conference.

Serbian tennis ace Novak Djokovic has said that he is not concerned about his number one ranking as he feels like he is already number one becoming a father last week, ahead of his return to action at the Paris Masters on Tuesday.

Djokovic would play his first match at the Paris Masters on Tuesday since wife Jelena Ristic gave birth to son Stefan. He will face Philipp Kohlschreiber as his first opponent since he lost to world number two Roger Federer in Shanghai earlier this month. Djokovic said that he feels like he is already number one becoming a father last week, The BBC reported.

SoftBank Internet and Media, Inc. (“SIMI”) and Snapdeal on Monday announced definitive agreements under which the SoftBank Group will become the largest investor in Snapdeal, through a total investment of $627 million.

Reports say that Snapdeal has raised approximately $ 1 billion during this year.

SC frowns upon delay in Delhi government formation

BJP criticises Akhilesh for attacks on policemen

The BJP Tuesday criticised the Samajwadi Party (SP) government in Uttar Pradesh for failing to take action against its party workers for attacking policemen in the state.

Citing four cases of violence by SP workers in the past two months, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak said he wanted to know if Chief Minister Akhliesh Yadav intended to take action against his party workers for beating up policemen and threatening officials.

Tourist trampled to death by elephant in Kerala

A school teacher from Gujarat on a holiday here was crushed to death by an elephant as she fell to the ground while clicking pictures with her four-year-old son. The police Tuesday described it as an accident.

Deepali, 27, was part of a 14-member holiday group from Gujarat’s Narmada district. The incident took place Monday evening at the elephant camp here.

Pakistanis protest India’s ‘occupation’ in Kashmir

Pakistanis across the world held demonstrations to mark the anniversary of what they termed as India’s invasion and occupation of Kashmir Oct 27, 1947, media reported Tuesday.

The Pakistani nation stands united with the Kashmiri people in their struggle for right to self-determination, Federal Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid said Monday.

“The hearts and minds of all Pakistanis are with Kashmiris,” he said at a seminar organised by the Youth Forum for Kashmir at the International Islamic University, Islamabad.

Grilled Cheese Tomato

Ingredients

1. 5 small tomatoes
2. 8 slices wholewheat bread
3. 200 g Cheddar
4. 1 clove garlic, halved

Method:

1 Prepare lightly oiled grill for medium heat.

2 Halve 1 tomato. Lightly coat 4 bread slices with olive oil spray. Put bread on work surface, oil side down and rub tops with cut sides of tomato. Slice the rest of the tomatoes.

3 Divide remaining tomato slices and cheese among rubbed bread, starting and ending with cheese. Top with remaining bread. Lightly coat with olive oil spray.

“They are more politically liberal and liberals are more likely to value the environment which makes them more likely to believe in global warming,” explained lead researcher Jeff Joireman, associate professor of marketing at Washington State University.

The future-oriented women are the voting bloc most strongly motivated to invest money, time and taxes toward reducing global warming, he added.

Pakistan prepares to cope with cyclone

Plan to protect Great Barrier Reef inadequate: Scientists

Scientists have criticised the Australian government’s multi-million dollar Great Barrier Reef protection plan, claiming it ignores the threat of climate change.

The Australian Academy of Science (AAS) was asked to produce a response to the federal government’s ‘Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan’ and delivered its verdict Tuesday morning.

Its report suggested that although climate change represented the Great Barrier Reef’s biggest threat, the protection plan did not address the matter as a realistic threat to the reef’s long-term health, Xinhua reported.

Imran Khan to protest at poll panel office

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan is set to stage a rally outside the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) building Tuesday to protest “poll rigging”.

Addressing the participants of his party’s sit-in at D-Chowk Monday, he said that the current assembly, the prime minister and the government were not genuine because last year’s elections were massively rigged, Dawn online reported.

“We would have never given a call for protest had we succeeded in getting justice against poll rigging,” Khan said.

Sensex gains 62 points; capital goods stocks surge

A benchmark index of Indian equities markets Tuesday was trading 62.41 points or 0.23 percent up as capital goods stocks gained.

Good buying was observed in capital goods and banking sectors, while selling pressure was seen in metal and oil and gas sectors.

The 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 26,788.73 points, was trading at 26,815.31 points (at 09.17 a.m.) in the early session, up 62.41 points or 0.23 percent from the previous day’s close at 26,752.90 points.

A new study has revealed that shifting patterns of precipitation affect key chemicals responsible for the flavor and health properties of tea.

The findings showed shows that major antioxidant compounds that determine tea health properties and flavor, including epigallocatechin, epigallocatechin gallate, epicatechin gallate, gallocatechin gallate, catechin and gallic acid, fell up to 50 percent in an area of southwest China during an extreme monsoon, while other compounds increased.

Cyclone Nilofar: High alert issued for Gujarat fishermen

Fishermen in Amreli district here have been advised not to venture into sea as the Cyclone Nilofar is likely to make a landfall on Friday near Naliya in Kutch district of Gujarat.

Cyclone Nilofar was located 1,270 kilometres west-southwest of western Mumbai last night. It is expected to hit the land mass with a wind speed of 90-100 kilometres per hour.

“All the boats have been called back. There is no arrangement of putting any kind of signal here,” said Bahibai Solanki, vice president of the Fisheries union.

Google celebrates Jonas Salk’s 100th b’day with doodle

Google has dedicated a doodle on its homepage to Jonas Salk on scientist’s100th birthday.

Salk, who developed polio vaccine, never patented the vaccine which made him an international hero, the Independent reported.

The illustration depicts two children holding up a sign reading “Thank you, Dr Salk!” paying a tribute to the virologist’s work against a disease whose main victims were children.

Salk graduated from New York University School of Medicine in 1939 with his M.D. degree, and soon started work as a staff physician at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
