Unitech group firm sells 6 realty projects for Rs 1,850 cr

Unitech Corporate Parks (UCP), the London listed Unitech group firm, on Wednesday said the company has completed a deal to sell its stakes in six IT-SEZ projects in India to Canada’s Brookfield Asset Management for 188.9 million pounds (about Rs 1,850 crore).

However, the total sale proceeds are lower than the amount agreed initially in June at Rs 2,050 crore.

Government likely to replace Plan panel with new body by year-end

A new government body in the place of the old centralised model of Planning Commission will likely to be formed by the year end, as per media reports.

The PM had promised on August 15 to announce “a new institution with a new spirit” soon.

The new body will lead the country based on creative thinking, public-private partnership, optimum utilisation of resources, utilisation of youth power of the nation, to promote the aspirations of state governments seeking development, to empower the state governments and to empower the federal structure, he had said.

Ajmal, 37, leaves for Britain next week to undergo tests on his new action, having been suspended by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in September following a biomechanical test carried out in Brisbane, Australia.

Offering an opportunity to over 5,000 students to secure employment, Delhi University conducted a job fair for the students graduating in 2015.

“Three companies came to hire around 100 students during the first placement drive of the session. 35 students have successfully secured jobs for themselves,” JM Khurana, Dean Students’ Welfare, DU said.

The job profiles offered to these students include content writing, business development, nutritionist, customer care executive and academic coordinators. The average package offered to them is Rs 4.8 Lakh per annum, he added.

The Goa health authorities have advised people “not to play with monkeys and baboons” for fear of contracting the Ebola virus.

The Goa government has already formed a core committee to monitor the preparedness of the state to keep the dreaded West African Ebola disease at bay, a statement said.

The committee comprises top health officials, police, immigration officials in the state and will be chaired by the health secretary.

US-led air strikes in Syria hit Qaeda, Islamist rebels

US-led air strikes in Syria hit Al-Qaeda-linked militants and an Islamist rebel brigade in a rare expansion of weeks-long raids targeting the Islamic State group, a monitor said today.

American media reported that 24-year-old French bombmaker David Drugeon, a Muslim convert who joined an Al-Qaeda offshoot, the Khorasan group, was killed in the overnight strikes.

The raids hit Al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Nusra Front for only the second time since the US-led coalition began bombings in the war-torn country on September 23, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Festival on Indian languages begins in Delhi

For the first time, the festival will this year host writers from Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

The fourth edition of the Samanvay – IHC Indian Languages Festival 2014 – will continue until Nov 9, featuring more than 90 speakers and performers on 20 languages and dialects.

Man without entry pass shared dais with PM Modi at Fadnavis’s swearing-in

In a major security lapse, a man claiming to be a BJP activist managed to gain entry into the swearing-in ceremony of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis here without possessing a valid pass and even reached the dais where Prime Minister Narendra Modi was sitting.

The grand swearing-in ceremony was organised inside Wankhede Stadium in South Mumbai on October 31. The man, identified as Anil Mishra, was spotted on the dais where Modi and other dignitaries were sitting, and police are now investigating how he managed to get there.

Ex-Trinamool functionary Asif Khan arrested in cheating case

Former Trinamool Congress functionary Asif Khan, who fell out with the party after he alleged complicity of the top leadership in the Saradha chit fund scam, was late Thursday night arrested in connection with an alleged case of cheating.

Khan, a city based businessman, was nabbed from the Tiljala area in south east Kolkata by personnel of the Bidhannagar police Commissionerate and taken to the New Town police station, police said.

He will be presented in court on Friday.

MNC’s legal counsel attacked outside Supreme Court

Legal counsel of a multinational company was allegedly assaulted and threatened with a knife by three men outside the Supreme Court.

The three accused, identified as Anoop Das (22), Nitin (22) and Ajay (26), have been arrested, police said today.

The incident took place on Monday afternoon when the lawyer after a court hearing was about to leave in his car along with a female colleague when the trio forcibly opened the vehicle’s door and started thrashing him.

Man poses IRS officer, arrested; maps of army camps recovered

A man was today arrested for allegedly extorting money posing as an Indian Revenue Services officer also maps, photographs and video of army training camps have been recovered from him, police said.

Ashutosh Tripathi was being interrogated by the officials of Military intelligence, Air Force intelligence and Anti-Terror Squad (ATS), after some maps, photographs and video of army camps were found in his possession, raising suspicion of him being associated with some terror cell, said Kanpur SSP K Emanuel.

A car, with an army number plate, in which he was travelling has also been seized.

Centres will be set up to promote Hindi: Irani

The government plans to set up centres for Hindi studies across the country with a view to promote the language, HRD Minister Smriti Irani said today.

“There is a need for expansion and popularisation of Hindi and for this, new centres will be set up,” she said at a function at the Central Hindi Institute here.

The minister said those contributing to the promotion of Hindi will also be given recognition.

Mumbai bound Air India flight from Bangkok makes emergency

An Air India flight en route to Mumbai from Bangkok made an emergency landing at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport here this evening, after the pilot reported an on-board medical emergency, airport sources said.

The pilot first contacted the Air Traffic Control (ATC) shortly after 9 PM and informed that a passenger had fallen sick and he would be making an emergency landing, the sources said.

Israel positive about ‘Make in India’ campaign: Netanyahu

Responding favourably to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu has told visiting Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh that his country is keen to take advantage of the move.

Netanyahu said that Israel is ready and willing to discuss transfer and development of technologies with India.
