Sensex up 114 points in early trade on funds buying

Extending yesterday’s gains, the benchmark BSE Sensex rose over 114 points in early trade today on increased buying by funds and retail investors mainly in oil and gas, banking, capital goods, realty and FMCG sector stocks.

The 30-share barometer gained 114.04 points, or 0.51 per cent, to 22,559.16. It had gone up by 41.23 points in the previous session.

The National Stock Exchange index Nifty was higher by 40.60 points, or 0.61 per cent, at 6,739.95 in the morning trade.

Dr. Rada K. Dagher, assistant professor of health services administration at the University of Maryland School of Public Health, said they know that it’s better for women to take time off after childbirth to take care of their physical and mental health.

She said returning to work soon after childbirth may not be good for these women or for their children.

SSLC toppers of last year’s yet to get promised desktops

The SSLC results are just round the corner, but government school students who passed last year’s exams with flying colours and were entitled to free desktops have still not got them.

The Karnataka Secondary Education and Examination Board (KSEEB), in-charge of distributing the desktops, have already got the allocated fund of Rs 2.46 crore in its kitty.

But, rise in the prices of desktops quoted during the tendering process has led to the impediment, according to a well-placed source.

Failed in love, Fashion designer hangs herself

On Friday night, a fashion designer allegedly hanged herself at her flat on CMH Road in Indiranagar.

According to Abhijitha, 35, who hailed from Chennai, said in a reported death note that her boyfriend Rohit Jain, an hotelier, had cheated on her and hence she was taking her life.

Recently the deceased had purchased a flat in the City and would stay there whenever she visited Bangalore, police said.
Four days ago, she arrived in the City and stayed in the flat ever since. Police have booked Jain for abetment to suicide.

Syria: Rockets slam into Aleppo district, kill Nine

Syrian state media say rockets have slammed into a government-held district in the northern city of Aleppo, killing 9 people.

The SANA state news agency said today that the overnight attack occurred in Aleppo’s residential neighborhood of Ashrafiyeh.

There was no claim of responsibility for the attack. Rebels fighting to oust President Bashar Assad from power have frequently fired mortars and rockets into cities that are under control of his forces.

GE makes $389 mn offer for Alstom’s India unit shares

General Electric Co. (GE) Monday made a bid to buy shares worth up to $389 million in two India units of French engineering major Alstom SA.

According to a stock exchange filing by the offer manager Credit Suisse, GE has sought to buy 25 percent in Alstom T&D India Ltd. from public shareholders at Rs.261.25 a share, in a deal valued at $278 million.

A separate filing said GE is also seeking to buy 26 percent of Alstom India Ltd. at Rs.382.20 a share for a deal of up to $111 million. GE will proceed with the offers only if its bid for Alstom’s energy arm goes through, the filings said.

Nokia bets big on connected cars, launches $100mn venture fund

Looking to tap the rapidly growing smart and intelligent automobile market, Finnish telecom giant Nokia today launched a USD 100 million venture fund to invest in auto technology across the globe, including India.

The Connected Car Fund, that will be managed by Nokia Growth Partners (NGP), will work in collaboration with another Nokia arm HERE to develop the ecosystem around HERE’s mapping and location products and services.

The fund extends NGP’s global investment activities in the US, India, China and Europe where NGP continue to invest in high potential businesses.

100 AIFs had targeted to raise over Rs 13,000 cr in FY’14

About 100 AIFs – newly created class of pooled-in investment vehicles for real estate, private equity and hedge funds – are targeted to mop-up over Rs 13,000 crore in 2013-14.

This was sharply higher than the target of Rs 1,544 crore at the end of March 31, 2013.According to information available with market regulator Sebi, Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs) were committed to garner Rs 13,465 crore in 2013-14 and of this they raised Rs 4,569 crore and invested about Rs 3,348 crore during the period.

Supertech case: SC agrees to examine plea, orders status quo

The Supreme Court today agreed to examine real estate major Supertech Ltd’s plea against the Allahabad High Court’s order directing demolition of two 40- floor towers in Noida and ordered the company not to sell or transfer flats in the buildings.

A bench headed by Chief Justice R M Lodha issued notice on a batch of petitions filed by Supertech, NOIDA, flat owners of the controversial buildings and the petitioner on whose plea the high court had passed the order.
