Though rains are still some days away, buying this umbrella that can collect rain data won’t be a bad idea.

A Danish researcher has built a prototype umbrella that has a sensor.

It detects raindrops falling on its canvas and uses bluetooth to send this information via a phone to a computer, a BBC report said.

“We have radar and satellites, but we are not measuring rain on the ground as we used to; it’s expensive to maintain the gauges,” Rolf Hut from Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands was quoted as saying.

Using the ‘empty’ space between stars and galaxies that is made up of sparsely spread charged particles as a giant lens, researchers have made a measurement of a distant rotating neutron star that is believed to be the most precise till now.

The new measurement is one million times more precise than the previous world’s best.

Neutron stars were particularly interesting objects to study, as some of them – called pulsars – gave off pulsed radio waves whose beams swept across telescopes at regular intervals.

The 27-year-old adventurer and big environmentalist, Rob Greenfield, had earlier planned to go 100 days without using ‘manmade sources of bathing’ during a lengthy bike ride, but he later decided to go further with the idea as he enjoyed it completely, the Daily Star reported.

The California-based man used just two gallons of water a day for the year compared to 100 gallons a day that an average American uses.

Oil India buys 50% stake in Russian oil block for $85 m

Oil India Ltd, the nation’s second biggest state-run explorer, has bought a 50 per cent stake in an oil block in Russia for $85 million.

OIL last month signed an agreement with Ireland- registered but Russia-focused firm PetroNeft Resources Plc to take a 50 per cent non-operating interest in License 61 in Tomsk Oblast in Russia, official sources said. The deal includes a three-stage payout including $35 million in cash up-front, $45 million in exploration and development spending and a performance bonus of up to $5 million.

Sensex up 89 points in early trade on global cues

The benchmark BSE Sensex recovered nearly 89 points in early trade today on emergence of buying by funds and retail investors amidst a firming trend in global markets after Federal Reserve Chief Janet Yellen’s upbeat outlook on the US economy.

The 30-share index rose by 88.71 points, or 0.40 per cent, to 22,412.61 points with metal, healthcare, realty and power sector stocks leading the recovery. The index had lost 184.52 points in yesterday’s trade.

The National Stock Exchange index Nifty moved up by 25.10 points, or 0.38 per cent, to 6,677.65.

Rupee up 12 paise against dollar in early trade

The rupee recovered by 12 paise to 60.01 against the dollar at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market today on fresh selling of the US currency by exporters.

Forex dealers said a higher opening in the domestic equity market and strengthening of the euro against the US currency overseas also supported the rupee.

The rupee closed 2 paise lower at 60.13 yesterday as a sudden demand for the US currency emerged at fag-end of trade.

Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex rose by 88.71 points, or 0.40 per cent, to 22,412.61 in early trade today.PTI

Sensex closes 184 points lower; IT stocks decline

A benchmark index of Indian equities markets closed Wednesday’s trade 184.52 points or 0.82 percent down as IT, automobile and technology, media and entertainment stocks tanked.

However, healthy buying was observed in consumer durables and power stocks.

The 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 22,488.96 points, closed the trade at 22,323.90 points (provisional), down 184.52 points or 0.82 percent from the previous day’s close at 22,508.42 points.

Concussions: Men recover later than women

Men may take longer to recover and show more brain damage than women do in concussions, according to a study.

Concussions are the result of mild trauma to the brain, often caused by the blows to the head.

In the study, researchers examined brain scans and medical records of 47 men and 22 women with concussions, and a group of 21 men and women without any brain injury.

The results showed that it took men with concussions an average of 67 days to recover, compared with an average of 26 days for women.

Spears sued for breaking back-up dancer’s nose?

A back-up dancer has sued singer Britney Spears for allegedly breaking her nasal bone during rehearsals for the “Work Bitch” music video. She has said that the “Oops…I did it again” crooner didn’t pay for any medical bills either.

The injury took place during the filming of Spears’ music video Aug 19, 2013 in Woodland Hills, California.

The dancer, Dawn Noel, filed the lawsuit Monday, in which she claims her injury required surgery for a nasal bone fracture and that she had to pay the medical bill even though Spears’ team promised to cover all expenses, reports tmz.com.

CBI gives Amit Shah clean chit in Ishrat Jahan encounter case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday gave a clean chit to former Gujarat home minister and key Narendra Modi aide Amit Shah in connection with the Ishrat Jahan encounter case.

Submitting its report to a Special CBI court here, the investigating agency said that there was clinching or conclusive evidence to accuse Shah of being involved or even ordering the encounter shooting of Ishrat Jahan in 2004, which eventually turned out to be a fake one.

National Highways comprises of Bangalore-Mysore in State to be upgraded

According to Public Works Department Minister H C Mahadevappa, the Union Ministry of Surface Transport has accorded in principle approval for upgrading seven different stretches of National Highways (NHs) comprises of Bangalore-Mysore in the State.

On Tuesday while speaking to media-persons here, he said close to 2,108 km of NHs would be upgraded to ensure smooth traffic flow on those routes. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) will improve the roads under public private partnership.

Railway attendant died accidently

A 26-year-old railway attendant died of injuries he had suffered in a train accident under City Railway police limits on Monday night.

The deceased has been identified as Anil Kumar, a resident of Magadi Road and a native of Chikmagalur.

According to police, Kumar was hit by a bogie of Rajdhani Express while he was crossing the railway track.
He suffered severe injuries and was taken to the nearby Railway Hospital and was admitted to a private hospital for further treatment where he died on Monday night, police said.
