Indian-American cardiologist Mitul Kadakia has been granted the 2014 Gregory Braden Memorial Fellow of the Year Award by the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions Foundation.

The award, considered a tremendous prestige in the cardiology community, is given to one graduating interventional cardiology fellow per year, out of the thousands in the US.

Vedanta says no bauxite mining at Niyamgiri till local nod

Billionaire NRI Anil Agarwal-led Vedanta Resources has made it clear that it will not look at mining bauxite from the Niyamgiri hills to feed its Rs 5,000 crore Lanjigarh alumina refinery in Odisha until it gets approval from the local community.

“In deference to the sentiments of the community, Vedanta confirms it is not seeking to source bauxite from Niyamgiri bauxite deposit for its alumina refinery operations and will not do so until we have the consent of the local communities,” Vedanta said in a statement today.

France’s Orange hacked again, 1.3 mln customers’ personal data stolen

Personal data of nearly 1.3 million customers have been stolen from the French branch of mobile network operator and Internet service provider Orange.

Hackers accessed the names, email addresses and phone numbers of the customers.

According to the BBC, Orange France was aware of the hack since 18 April, but delayed making an announcement to asses the damage.

Earlier this year, Orange was hacked and the personal data of 800,000 of its clients were stolen in a similar attack.

Key to healthy heart hidden in obese polar bears!

Polar bears are the most fat-obsessed beasts but have healthy hearts and this may hold the genetic key for humans to avoid heart disease, a promising research has found.

Up to half of the body weight of polar bears consists of fat and their blood cholesterol levels are high enough to cause cardiovascular disease in humans.

“The life of a polar bear revolves around fat. Nursing cubs rely on milk that can be up to 30 percent fat and adults eat primarily blubber of marine mammal prey,” explained Eline Lorenzen of University of California Berkeley.

Gogoi says special security forces likely to be deployed in Assam

Assam’s Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has said his government has asked for the deployment of special security forces as a confidence building measure.

Gogoi said this request to the central government has been made after 41 Muslims were gunned down over a period of three days by hardcore tribal militants who are against the presence of immigrants from Bangladesh.

Gogoi was speaking to media here after visiting violence hit Baksa and Kokrajhar Districts on Wednesday. He also met the family members of the victims who had been brutally killed.

Sensex gains 269 points; bank stocks up

A benchmark index of Indian equities markets gained nearly one and a half percent during the pre-noon trade session Friday, as banks, capital goods and automobile stocks rallied.

However, healthcare stocks came under sustained selling pressure.

The 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 22,374.98 points, was trading at 22,613.77 points in the pre-noon session, up 269.73 points or 1.21 percent from the previous day’s close at 22,344.04 points.

Low-carb diet reduces inflammation in diabetics

A new study has revealed that a low-carbohydrate diet reduces inflammation in patients with type 2 diabetes.

According to research at Linkoping University in Sweden, compared with healthy individuals without diabetes, the patients exhibited significantly higher levels of inflammatory markers at baseline but inflammation was significantly reduced in the low-carbohydrate group after 6-months.

Toll protest: villagers will get concession, CM

Amid persistent protests against the toll hike on the National Highway leading to international airport, Chief Minister Siddaramaih today said there will be concession on toll for villagers within the proximity of the highway.

“Toll will be collected at concession rate from villagers in about 40 km radius, that is Rs 220 per month for any number of trips they commute,” he told reporters here.

Villagers within a five kilometre radius need not pay any toll, he said.

Bride shot dead at wedding by jilted lover

In a tragic incident on Thursday night, a jilted lover shot at a bride on the stage in full public view at a marriage garden in Lalghati area of the city.

The incident took place at 11:15 pm on Thursday.

The accused was identified as one Anurag, fired two rounds, and was caught by the people present there soon after the incident and handed over to the police.

The woman later succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.

Oberoi Realty on Thursday said it has tied up with international luxury brand Ritz-Carlton for its upcoming Worli hotel project here.

This project would be developed by Oasis Realty, a joint venture between Sahana and Oberoi Realty. It would comprise two high-rise towers.

Domestic car sales down 10.15% in April

Domestic passenger car sales declined by 10.15 percent to 135,433 units in April as compared to 150,737 units in the year-ago month.

Motorcycle sales last month grew by 8.06 percent to 911,908 units from 843,909 units in the year-ago period, according to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

Total two-wheeler sales in April grew by 11.67 percent to 13,04,447 units as against 11,68,100 units in the same month last year.

Sales of commercial vehicles were down by 24 percent to 43,080 units in April, SIAM said.

Rupee down 3 paise against dollar in early trade

The rupee today fell marginally by 3 paise to 60.10 against the dollar in early trade on the Interbank Foreign Exchange due to appreciation of the US currency overseas.

Dealers attributed the domestic currency’s fall to dollar gains against other currencies overseas, but a higher opening in the domestic equity market capped rupee’s losses.

The rupee had gained 6 paise to close at 60.07 against the dollar in yesterday’s trade on fresh selling of the American currency by banks and exporters in view of strong capital inflows.

Lack of workout after 30 ups women’s lifetime heart disease risk

A new study has revealed that from 30 years of age, inactivity and lack of exercise exerts a greater impact on a woman’s lifetime risk of developing heart disease.

According to the study, prevalence of smoking fell from 28 percent in women age 22-27 to 5 percent in 73-78 year olds, but the prevalence of inactivity and high blood pressure increased steadily across the lifespan from age 22 to 90 and overweight increased from age 22 to 64, which declined in older age.

Sensex up 38 points in early trade

Extending yesterday’s gains, the benchmark BSE Sensex rose over 38 points in early trade today on selective buying by investors amid a mixed trend on other Asian bourses.

The 30-share index, which had gained 20.14 points in yesterday’s volatile session, rose further by 38.72 points, or 0.17 per cent, to 22,382.76 with stocks of power, banking, IT, realty, metals and FMCG sectors moving up.

The National Stock Exchange index Nifty also moved up by 6.40 points, or 0.10 per cent, to 6,666.25.

According to a media report who claimed that Israel spied on the US at an “alarming” level and these “unrivalled” espionage activities went beyond those of other close allies.

Yesterday, an article in the Newsweek claimed that Israel spies on the US under the cover of trade missions or as part of joint defence technology agreements. The article cited confidential briefings by American intelligence officials to the Congress in which they said that Israeli espionage operations in the US have “gone too far”.

AirAsia India gets licence to fly: Govt official

After a long wait and legal hurdles, new airline AirAsia India was on Wednesday granted the flying licence by aviation regulator DGCA, subject to the final outcome of cases opposing grant of the permit in the Delhi high court.

“We have granted the Air Operator’s Permit (AOP or flying licence) to AirAsia India, subject to the final decision of the high court and that is, under the directions of the Supreme Court,” DGCA chief Prabhat Kumar said.

The airline’s parent company, Malaysian carrier AirAsia’s CEO Tony Fernandes tweeted.
