244 kgs of Heroin confiscated at Indo-Pak border this year

Security forces have recovered 244 kilograms of heroin so far in 2014 from the international border in Punjab, an official said. “We have seized 243.6 kgs of Heroin along with fake Indian currencies, arms and other drugs till now,” Punjab DG for SSB Ajay Kumar Tomar said.

“The increase in smuggling can be gauged from the fact that 322 kgs of the drug was seized last year, whereas this year the figure has gone to 244 kgs in the first four months,” he said.

Cipla to pick 14.6% stake in Chase Pharmaceuticals for $1.5 mn

Drug firm Cipla Ltd today said it will acquire 14.6 per cent stake in US-based Chase Pharmaceuticals Corporation Inc for USD 1.5 million.

The investment will be done through Cipla’s wholly owned subsidiary Cipla (EU) Ltd, UK.

Cipla also said it will make an additional USD 4.5 million investment in Chase upon achievement of certain milestones.

“..Company has signed a definitive agreement to invest USD 1.5 million in Chase Pharmaceuticals Corporation Inc, US, to acquire 14.6 per cent stake in Chase on a fully diluted basis,” Cipla said in a BSE filing.

Clerk committed suicide

K T Ramachandra, aged 54, was a clerk with the Department of Prosecution, hanged himself at his residence in Sampige Layout on Saturday morning.

The incident became known when Ramachandra’s wife saw him hanging from the window railings of the bathroom. She informed the neighbours who rushed him to a nearby private hospital but he was declared brought dead.

New IQ-boosting gene found

Scientists have found that people who have a variant of a longevity gene have improved brain skills such as thinking, learning and memory.

Researchers found that increasing levels of the gene, called KLOTHO, in mice made them smarter, possibly by increasing the strength of connections between nerve cells in the brain.

9 indians die in dubai road mishap

At least nine Indian workers were among 13 people killed when the bus they were travelling in rammed into a parked truck on the busy Emirates road here.

The bus hit the parked truck, flipped on its left side and skidded for five meters, killing 13 people on the spot including Indians and Bangladeshis on Saturday, police said. All the nine Indians were from Bihar, an official from the Indian Consulate here said.PTI

Gold futures weaken on global cues

Gold futures prices fell by 0.31 per cent to Rs 28,436 per 10 grams, as participants indulged in reducing exposures, largely in tandem with a global trend. At the Multi Commodity Exchange, gold for delivery in June, fell by Rs 89, or 0.31 per cent, to trade at Rs 28,436 per 10 grams in a turnover of 207 lots. Similarly, the metal for delivery in August shed Rs 66 or 0.24 per cent, to Rs 27,850 per 10 gm in three lots.

Ship with Rs 1,600 crore heroin sailed from Gujarat coast: Congress

Congress today alleged that heroin worth Rs 1,600 crore seized by Australian maritime force off the Kenya coast last month originated from Gujarat and sought to punch holes in Narendra Modi’s claims of providing strong national security.

Physical inactivity linked to future heart disease risk in women

A new study has revealed that lack of physical activity is one of the major reasons behind future heart disease risk in women.

According to the study by researchers of University of Queensland, physical inactivity was a leading factor for heart disease in women at every age from the early 30s to late 80s, CBS News reported.

Lead author Wendy Brown, director of the university’s Center for Research on Exercise, Physical Activity and Health, said that from about age 30, physical activity levels decline and women need to do everything that they can to avoid it.
