The skyline of Dubai is set to undergo a sea change as the construction industry here is expected to gain further momentum this year, according to an international property agency.

Construction cranes have dotted the Dubai skyline and are seen to herald the economic growth, with a major build-up of momentum in the real estate activity.

Dubai was once home to almost 25 percent of the world’s cranes during the height of the property boom and now is set for the revival era of the construction industry.

Counting starts tomorrow; nearly 8000 candidates for 543 Lok Sabha seats

Votes polled in the nine-phased Lok Sabha elections will be counted tomorrow to decide who will form the next government.

Election Commission said the counting exercise to be held at 989 counting centres is likely to be completed by 5 PM and trends will be available by 11 AM.

By noon, a final picture could emerge on who would be the major players in the 16th Lok Sabha.

Nearly 8000 candidates, including top guns Narendra Modi, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Arvind Kejriwal were in the fray, in the largest-ever electoral exercise held in Indian history.

Richa teams with Kalki for play

Richa Chadha and Kalki Koechlin will soon be seen in a film based on travel and a coming-of-age story titled “Jiah aur Jiah”. But before the audiences get to see them on the big screen, the two actresses have joined hands for a play.

Richa and Kalki will play lead characters in a play directed by Atul Kumar.

The play rehearsals are reportedly already underway and the production will premiere in Mumbai in July, following which it will later tour six cities across the country.

Emma Watson set for graduation ceremony

After four years of pursuing a course in English Literature from Brown University in Providence, US, British actress Emma Watson will receive her degree later this month.

The “Harry Potter” star will receive a degree by the Ivy League university May 25, reports contactmusic.com.

Watson began studying at the institute in 2009, but after 18 months, in March 2011, she was forced to take a leave of absence to continue her filming commitments.

Now, ‘manmade’ shark skin that boosts swimming

Scientists have made the first ever realistic simulated shark skin that they believe will boost swimming.

Scientists from Harvard University also measured that the fish’s sharp scales boost swimming by up to 6.6 percent while reducing the energy cost.

George Lauder and his colleagues Li Wen and James Weaver took a small sample of the fish’s skin for scanning to get a high-resolution view of the surface and then built a detailed model of the structure before reproducing it thousands of times in a computer model of the skin.

Sharma was the woman whose son Tiwari recently accepted as his own after a lengthy lawsuit.

Rohit Shekhar, 32, had taken the politician to court after Tiwari had refused to acknowledge their biological relationship.

In March, Tiwari publicly accepted Shekhar is his son.

Sensex slips 56 points after 3 days of gains

Mumbai, May 14 (IANS) A benchmark index of Indian equities markets Wednesday closed in the negative territory — down 56 points or 0.24 percent — after three consecutive sessions of record gains, as oil and gas and capital goods stocks came under heavy selling pressure.

The 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) had Tuesday crossed the 24,000-mark for the first time in its history recording 24,068.94 points.

New radar images show unseen side of moon

Combined efforts of the two largest radio telescopes of their kind – the National Radio Astronomy Observatory’s Green Bank Telescope (GBT) in West Virginia and the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico have produced images of Earth’s Moon that reveal more than can be seen with the naked eye.

To make these images, radar signals beamed from Arecibo’s powerful transmitter penetrated far below the Moon’s dusty surface. The signals then rebounded back and were picked up by the sensitive receivers on the GBT.

Uneasy calm in riot-hit parts of Hyderabad

An uneasy calm prevailed in riot-hit areas of Hyderabad Thursday, a day after paramilitary troopers opened fire killing three people following communal clashes that left scores injured.

An indefinite curfew continued in Kishan Bangh, Sikh Chowni and Arsh Mahal areas of the Cyberabad police commissionerate.

Police said the situation remained peaceful. No untoward incident was reported since Wednesday morning when Border Security Force (BSF) personnel opened fire on a mob.

These mango trees date back to Tipu’s era

Carbon dating and other scientific assessment by the Genetics and Plant Breeding Department of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, have shown that these trees are more than 200 years old.

Google Glass now available for all in US

Grabbing a piece of Google Glass has just become a bit easier as the company opened the online sale of its wearable computer device for all with $1,500 (about Rs.90,000) in the US Wednesday.

Until now, anyone who wished to “explore” the eyewear device required an invite or a referral from a friend.

Google first offered the product to a few chosen “Explorers” last year.

The Glass, that can be worn like a normal pair of sunglasses, consists of a tiny screen in front of the right eye, a battery, a frame, a touch-sensitive panel and a camera.

Early menopause increases risk of heart failure

In a first, researchers have found that women who go through menopause early – at ages 40 to 45 – have a higher rate of heart failure because of the inability of the heart to pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs.

Smoking raises the risk even more, the study noted.

The study involved 22,000 postmenopausal women in Sweden.

Women who went through menopause naturally at this early age had a rate of heart failure some 40 percent higher than women who went through menopause at the usual age between 50 and 54, the average age being 51.

Move over Google to search for your medication. A hand-held scanner – about the size of a flash drive – can determine the molecular makeup of objects like food and medication.

Developed by Consumer Physics, a Tel Aviv-based start up in Israel, the scanner called ‘Scio’ emits a beam of light, which you can shine on, say, a piece of fruit.

Rupee falls 14 paise to 60.31 against US dollar in early trade

The rupee weakened by 14 paise to 60.31 against the US dollar in early trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market on Thursday on disappointing IIP numbers.

Forex dealers said dollar’s gains against other currencies overseas and increased demand for the American unit from importers also weighed on the rupee but a higher opening of the domestic equity market capped the fall.

Sensex recovers 152 points in early trade on funds buying

The benchmark BSE Sensex rebounded nearly 152 points in early trade today as funds and investors indulged in enlarging positions ahead of the outcome of the Lok Sabha elections amidst a mixed trend in Asian markets.

The 30-share index, which had slipped from record-high levels by falling 56.11 points in yesterday’s trade, recovered by 151.78 points, or 0.64 per cent, to trade at 23,966.90.
