Modi must keep in mind minorities: Syed Bukhari

The country may face a spell of ”communalism” with the BJP set to form the next government at the centre, the Shahi Imam of Delhi, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, said Friday.

”It is likely that we will be moving towards communalism,” Bukahri said.

He added that the ”division of the secular vote” contributed to the improved performance of the BJP.

BJP leading in all seven Delhi seats

The BJP Friday took early leads in all the seven Lok Sabha seats of the national capital, with the AAP at the second position and Congress trailing at a poor third.

According to officials, two-time winning candidate and union minister Kapil Sibal was trailing at the third position from the Chandni Chowk constituency.

Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Harsh Vardhan was leading from this seat by more than 52,000 votes from the AAP candidate Ashutosh, who is in the second position.

Modi can revive ‘rudderless” US-India relationship: US experts

Two US foreign policy experts have suggested that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Narendra Modi can “revive India’s sputtering economy and give new élan to a disillusioned and rudderless US-India relationship.”

Noting that since 1991, India-US “bilateral relationship has gone through many stop-and-go cycles,” James C. Clad and Brent Scowcroft wrote in Foreign Policy magazine that “With Modi in place, the boom part of the cycle is about to start again.”

Sensex breaches 25,000-mark as BJP leads in vote count

Indian stocks were virtually on fire leading a key index to breach 25,000 points mark, as Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party took a big early lead in India’s national election vote count.

Around 10.50 a.m., the sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange was ruling at a never before high of 25,375.63 points against the previous close of 23,905.60 points, to log a single-day gain of 871.39 points, or 3.65 percent.

Tata Motors’ global sales decline 7.65% in April

Tata Motors on Thursday reported 7.65 percent decline in its global sales, including that of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), to 75,026 units in April.

The company had sold 81,241 units in April last year, Tata Motors said in a statement.

In the passenger vehicles category, global sales last month were at 47,972 units, as against 41,272 units in April 2013, up 16.23 percent.

Sales of luxury brand Jaguar Land Rover jumped 39 percent to 40,137 units in April, compared with 28,874 units in the same month last year.

Exchanges prepared for volatility on Friday: SEBI

Markets watchdog SEBI on Thursday said the stock exchanges are prepared to deal with “any irregularity” in trading on Friday, when the results for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections are to be announced.

“We want to assure investors that we are prepared for any eventuality and if anyone indulges in any irregularity in the market, we are fully prepared for that,” Sebi Chairman UK Sinha told reporters on the sidelines of an Assocham conference here.

Results: ICSE class 12, 10

The Class 12 and Class 10 results of all schools affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) will be announced at 3 pm on May 17 and May 21, respectively.

Students can gain access to their results by logging on to the CISCE website: www.cisce.com and clicking on the link, ‘Results, 2014’.

Separate links of ‘ISC results’ (Class 12) and ‘ICSE results’ (Class 10) will appear, students will have to enter their seven-digit Unique ID and date of birth to see the results.

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio has become quite a philanthropist by donating $1 million to help save elephants at a fundraising event.

The actor made the donation at the Sundown Gala, Malibu here Saturday, which raised money for the Elephant Crisis Fund.

The event was organisd by the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation along with actor Mark Wahlberg and the Wildlife Conservation Network.

The world’s largest flawless vivid blue diamond sold for USD 23.79 million at Christie’s auction, which realised a total of USD 154.19 million, the highest total ever for a jewellery sale, auctioneers said today.

The 13.22 carat diamond was purchased by Nayla Hayek, CEO of US watch and jewellery major Harry Winston from an anonymous bidder in intense bidding yesterday, Christie’s said.

Relatives want Mariyam moved to Singapore hospital

Kin of Mariyam Kousar, the victim of alleged medical negligence, have written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, requesting that the child should be shifted to Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore for further treatment.

The three-year-old Mariyam, was a victim of medical negligence after doctors at the Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedic Hospital administered her overdose of anaesthesia.

Pak Attorney General confirms FIR against army men can be filed

In a recent development Attorney General Salman Butt notified the Supreme Court that FIR can be filed against any army personnel currently under service as per Pakistan Army regulations.

According to Dawn News, Butt raised this point in the hearing of the Malakand missing persons’ case, which concerns the disappearance of 35 people from an internment centre in the region.

Limit fruit juice once a day to control sugar

Love fruit juice daily in the morning? Limit the glass to once a day because of its high sugar content, researchers from the British government’s ‘National Diet and Nutrition Survey’ have warned.

Young people aged 11 to 19 are consuming, on average, 47 percent too much sugar from fruit juices, soft drinks, cereal bars, biscuits and cakes, health experts said.

“Fruit juice should only be drunk once a day and with a meal because it can be high in sugar,” said Alison Tedstone, chief nutritionist at Public Health England, the Government agency that released the survey.

Five dead, 30 injured in bus mishap

Five bus passengers were killed and at least 30 others injured, 12 of them seriously, when a bus fell into a ditch in West Bengal’s Midnapore district today.

The driver of the Cuttack-bound bus lost control over the vehicle and the vehicle fell into a roadside ditch at Madpurghat near Kharagpur on National Highway 6.

Five persons died on the spot while 30 others were injured in the accident including the driver.

The injured were admitted to the Midnapore Medical College Hospital. All passengers of the bus hailed from Odisha.PTI

Nine killed in mishap in Karnataka

Nine persons were killed and an equal number injured, five of them seriously, in a head-on collision between a lorry and van at Kamplapura in Mysore district on Wednesday.

The victims, hailing from Dakshina district, were returning home after a visit to Tamil Nadu, police said.

The lorry was transporting LPG cylinders.

The injured have been admitted to hospitals in Periyapatna and Mysore, they said.PTI

A Karnataka-based woman judoka on Tuesday lodged a complaint of dowry harassment against her husband and in-laws residing here, police said.

Arpitha B M, hailing from Mandya in Karnataka, who has participated in three International Judo Championships, was married to a fashion designer from the city, Chaitresh Babu in November last and had given cash and ornaments worth over Rs 10 lakh as dowry and was residing at Vadavalli here since then, she said in a complaint to SP Sudhakar.

Power tariff hiked in Karnataka

Power tariffs in Karnataka have been increased by an average 32 paise per unit, with the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) today giving the green signal for it.

The increase ranges from 10 paise to 50 paise per unit as against 66 paise per unit hike asked for by the electricity supply companies (Escoms) for different categories of consumers barring irrigation pumpsets and subsidised “Bhagya Jyothi/Kuteer Jyothi” households for the poor.

Crude oil futures down 0.28 per cent on weak Asian cues

Crude oil futures on Thursday fell by 0.28 per cent to Rs 6,077 per barrel as speculators trimmed positions amid a weak trend in Asian trade. At the Multi Commodity Exchange, crude oil for delivery in May fell by Rs 17, or 0.28 per cent, to Rs 6,094 per barrel in 495 lots.

Besides, oil for June delivery moved down by Rs 14, or 0.23 per cent, to Rs 6,072 per barrel in 48 lots. Analysts said the fall in crude prices at futures trade was primarily after it fell in the Asian trade, following a rally in the previous session.
