Aishwarya to miss Cannes gala appearance Friday

Indian actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who was scheduled to make the first of two appearances at the 67th Cannes International Film Festival Friday, will not be able to walk the red carpet due to an air traffic controllers’ strike in France.

Aishwarya represents global cosmetics brand L’Oréal Paris at the annual gala.

“Aishwarya’s flight from London to Nice was delayed and hence she hasn’t been able to reach Cannes as planned. With the latest development, the L’Oréal Paris team is making arrangements for Aishwarya to walk the red carpet on an alternate day,” said a statement.

Jupiter’s trademark Great Red Spot – a swirling anti-cyclonic storm larger than Earth – has shrunk to its smallest size ever measured.

According to Amy Simon of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, recent NASA Hubble Space Telescope observations confirm the Great Red Spot now is approximately 10,250 miles across. Astronomers have followed this downsizing since the 1930s.

Japanese beverage maker Otsuka is sending a 1 kilogram titanium can filled with powdered sports drink and children’s dreams to the moon, it has been revealed.

The specially designed canister, which contains a shipment of Otsuka’s Pocari Sweat powder, will mark a disturbing new frontier for humanity: the first commercial product delivered to another world for marketing purposes.

The canister will be carried to the lunar surface aboard the first planned private moon-landing mission, set to take place in October 2015, the Verge reported.

Asian Paints Ltd to buy Ess Ess Bathroom’s front-end sales business

Asian Paints Ltd will acquire Ess Ess Bathroom Products Pvt Ltd’s entire front-end sales business for an undisclosed sum.

“The company on May 14, 2014 has entered into a binding agreement with Ess Ess Bathroom Products Pvt. Ltd and its promoters to acquire its entire front-end sales business including brands, network and sales infrastructure,” Asian Paints said today in a BSE filing.

Asian Paints said the acquisition is subject to satisfaction of certain conditions precedents and applicable statutory approvals.

‘Tata Motors’ global sales decline 7.65 per cent in April

Tata Motors on Thursday reported 7.65 per cent decline in its global sales, including that of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), to 75,026 units in April.

The company had sold 81,241 units in April last year, Tata Motors said in a statement.

In the passenger vehicles category, global sales last month were at 47,972 units, as against 41,272 units in April 2013, up 16.23 per cent.

Sales of luxury brand Jaguar Land Rover jumped 39 per cent to 40,137 units in April, compared with 28,874 units in the same month last year.

Exporters unhappy with rupee rally, seek intervention: CII

The recent rally in rupee vis-a-vis the US dollar has made a section of exporters unhappy, as the strengthening of the local currency makes Indian exports “uncompetitive” in the global marketplace, CII on Thursday said.

The rupee on Thursday gained 39 paise to close at a nearly 10-month high of 59.29 against the US dollar following sustained selling of the American currency by exporters and continued capital inflows, ahead of keenly-waited Lok Sabha poll results to be unveiled on Friday.

Naming of university after Tipu, opposed

Writer and Sahithya Akademi Award recipient, Dr. M. Chidananda Murthy has opposed the reported plan of naming a university to be set up in Kolar district, after Tipu Sultan, here on May 12.

Addressing the press persons, Dr. Murthy said that, recently the Tipu Sultan United Front (TSUF) insisted that the government should name the new university after Tipu Sultan.

Mr. K Rahman Khan, union minister for Minorities Affairs, had also stated that one of the five universities intended to be set up by the Centre in Kolar district would be named after Tipu Sultan.

Mahindra Lifespace gets Rs 325 crore from sale of Mumbai land

Realty player Mahindra Lifespace Developers said it received Rs 324.95 crore from the sale of a five-acre property in the Byculla area of the city owned by the Kanoria family.

“The company, together with the owner of the property at Byculla, has completed the sale of the property wherein Mahindra Lifespace had development rights on part of the property. Our share of the sale consideration is Rs 324.95 crore,” Mahindra Lifespace said on Thursday in a filing to the BSE.

The company did not reveal the name of the buyer or the size of the deal.

BJP leads in 17, Cong in 7, JDS 1 in Karnataka

TRS heading to form first government in Telangana

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) is set to form the first government in the newly created state of Telangana as the party has established leads in 64 of the 119 assembly constituencies.

TRS candidates were ahead of their rivals in most of the 10 districts of Telangana, which will become 29th state of India June 2. The party needs 60 seats for a simple majority.

The TRS was also leading in 11 out of 17 Lok Sabha constituencies in Telangana. TRS chief K. Chandrasekhara Rao was leading in both Medak Lok Sabha and Gajwel assembly constituencies.
