Rogue gene behind multiple heart disease risks identified

In a major breakthrough, researchers have identified a key gene, mutation of which could lead to a cluster of disorders such as obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes – together know as metabolic syndrome.

Having any or combinations of these factors could significantly increase risks of heart diseases and strokes.

The mutation was in the gene ‘Dyrk1B’ – an enzyme that in normal conditions regulates the balance of muscle to fat as well as stable glucose levels by controlling the signaling pathways.

Parent’s occupation linked to autism in kids

Children of parents who are in technical occupations are more likely to have an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and a more serious form of autism, a study suggested.

“Parent’s occupation could be indicative of autistic-like behaviour and preferences and serve as another factor in a doctor’s diagnosis of a child with suspected autism,” said Aisha S. Dickerson, a researcher at the University of Texas Health Science Center in the US.

For the study, parents were divided into those who had more non-people-oriented jobs (technical) or more people-oriented jobs (non-technical).

Walking may help prolong life of kidney patients

“A minimal amount of walking – just once a week for less than 30 minutes – appears to be beneficial, but more frequent and longer walking may provide a more beneficial effect,” explained Che-Yi Chou from China Medical University Hospital in Taiwan.

Adobe apologises for Creative Cloud service breakdown

Adobe has reportedly apologised for the breakdown of Creative Cloud service.

According to The BBC, Creative Cloud gives users access to a collection of software for graphic design, video editing, web development, photography, and Cloud services.

The company said in a blog that they will do better.

However, the company failed to offer any kind of compensation to the people affected by the 24-hour system failure.

Drashti Dhami has no time for movies

Minnesota signs smartphone kill-switch bill into law

According to The Verge, Governor of Minnesota Mark Dayton signed the first so-called ” kill switch” bill into law , which will allow users to remotely disable and wipe their phones after they’re stolen.

Dayton believes that this action will deter criminals from stealing phones.

Mafatlal Industries Ltd plans to raise denim production to 30 mn meters by 2015

Mafatlal Industries Ltd, the flagship company of the diversified Arvind Mafatlal Group, today said it has increased its production capacity from 20 million meters to 25 million meters.

The company also plans to further raise it to 30 million meters by 2015.

“We have increased our denim manufacturing production capacity from 20 million meters to 25 million meters and plan to increase it to 30 million meters by 2015 at our Navsari unit in Gujarat,” MIL Managing Director Rajiv Dayal said in a statement here.

Six killed as bus catches fire

Six persons were charred to death and 12 others injured, five of them serious, when a Bangalore-bound bus caught fire at Metikurke, 25 km from here, today.

Three critically injured passengers have been hospitalised at Davangere while two of them were admitted to a hospital here, police said.

The bus was carrying about 30 passengers from Davangere when the tragedy struck in the early hours, they said.PTI
