Researchers have said that patients with pancreatic cancer have a different and distinct profile of specific bacteria in their saliva compared to healthy controls and even patients with other cancers or pancreatic diseases.

Pedro Torres of San Diego State University who presented the research said their studies suggest that ratios of particular types of bacteria found in saliva may be indicative of pancreatic cancer.

Gum disease bacteria could also cause heart disease

Researchers have shown that the same bacteria that cause gum disease also promotes heart disease.

In the study, the researchers infected mice with four specific bacteria ( Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, Tannerella forsythia, Fusobacterium nucleatum) that cause gum disease and tracked their spread.

Once the bacteria were detected in the mouse gums, heart and aorta, researchers saw an increase in risk factors, including cholesterol and inflammation, associated with heart disease.

Vitamin C supplements may improve lung function in newborns of smoking women

Researchers have suggested that supplemental vitamin C taken by pregnant smokers improved measures of lung function for newborns and decreased the incidence of wheezing for infants through 1 year.

Cindy T. McEvoy, M.D., M.C.R., of Oregon Health and Science University, Portland, and colleagues randomly assigned pregnant smokers to receive vitamin C (500 mg/d) (n = 89) or placebo (n = 90).

Bad sperm health may lead to early death: Study

If your sperm is in bad shape, it may cut your lifespan by several years, a study indicates.

“It could be that men with sperm abnormalities tend to have undetected health problems that result in a higher risk of death,” said Michael Eisenberg, an assistant professor of urology at California-based Stanford University.

The study found that young and middle-aged men who had problems with their sperm – such as low sperm count and impaired sperm movement – were twice as likely to die over an eight-year period compared to men with normal sperm.

Sensex surges 276 points on strong capital inflows

Rupee rises 32 paise to hit fresh 11-month high against USD

Extending its rising streak for the fourth straight session, the rupee today jumped by another 32 paise to trade at a fresh 11-month high of 58.47 against the US dollar in early trade on sustained foreign capital inflows after the BJP-led NDA swept the Lok Sabha elections.

Increased selling of the dollar by banks and exporters amid sustained foreign capital inflows supported the rupee, dealers said.

Besides, a strong rally in domestic equity market in opening trade and the euro’s gain against the dollar overseas also helped the rupee, they added.

BJP secures 2.2 percent more vote share over Congress in Karnataka

Riding on the “Modi wave”, a 2.2 percent swing in its favour has propelled BJP to outperform the ruling Congress in Karnataka and secure 17 seats.

The Congress has secured 40.8 per cent of the votes as against BJP’s 43 per cent, up from 41.63 per cent in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls, an analysis of the voting percentage showed.

In the last Lok Sabha elections, BJP had secured 19 seats, Congress six and JDS 3.

Government urged to retrieve Tipu’s ring

Noted historian S. Settar has appealed to the Centre and the Karnataka government to take immediate steps to stop the auction of a ring belonging to 18 th century warrior king Tipu Sultan by a London firm on May 22.

Prof. Settar, Emeritus Professor, National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), has written to Union Minister of Culture Chandresh Kumari Katoch and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to “make use of all available avenues, legal and diplomatic, to recover the ring.”

Pak analyst says Modi’s mandate can help stabilize ties if he is serious about peace process

Censors clamp down on cleavage show in films

The Censor Board Of Film Certification (CBFC), which has so far been very liberal about display of cleavage, has suddenly decided to clamp down heavily on such scenes.

The first casualty of the censor board’s new-found regard for a woman’s modesty is new actress Rupali Krishnarao, who plays a prostitute in Asshu Trikha’s “Koyelaanchal”. Her cleavage has been blurred by the censors at several places in the film where the board members found the display of flesh too ample.

Cancer stem cells do exist in humans

The question where does cancer originate have long occupied the attention of scientists and the answer may well be found in cancer stem cells, a study confirmed.

The gene mutations driving cancer were tracked for the first time in patients back to cancer stem cells, according to the study.

“We have identified a subset of cancer cells, shown that these rare cells are invariably the cells in which the cancer originates, and also are the only cancer-propagating cells in the patients,” said Petter Woll from Oxford University.
