Volkswagen Group to invest 100 million euros on new models, localisation in India

German auto giant Volkswagen Group is planning to invest about 100 million euros (over Rs 800 crore) in India to expand business, including launches of sedan and SUV in the compact segment along with a hatchback.

“At present, an investment of approximately 100 million euros is in the decision process for new models and for further localisation of parts and components,” Volkswagen India President and Managing Director Mahesh Kodumudi told a news agency.

Peak power deficit drops to 5.4% in April: Central Electricity Authority

Peak power deficit in the country fell to 5.4 per cent at 7,556 MW in April, from 7.4 per cent a year ago due to increased capacity and lower electricity consumption by states.

The decline in consumption in certain north Indian states was due to weak intra-state network for dissemination of electricity.

As per the latest data by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), the total requirement in the country last month was 1,40,998 MW, as against the supply of 1,33,442 MW – a peak power deficit of 5.4 per cent.

Man gets 14 years jail term for raping, sodomising daughter

A man has been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment for raping and sodomising his 20-year-old daughter, by a Delhi court which noted that he violated all limits of humanity and showed no repentance over his offence.

Additional Sessions Judge Pawan Kumar Jain, while taking a stern view, handed down the jail term to the man for raping his daughter and criminally intimidating her and also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him.

Israel to boost economic ties with Latin America

The Israeli government Sunday approved a plan worth of about 14.5 million dollars to strengthen economic ties with the Pacific Alliance and other Latin American countries, Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said.

The plan includes reopening the Israeli embassy in Paraguay, setting up two new commercial attaches’ offices in Chile and Peru, cooperating with the Inter-American Development Bank on a designated fund in industrial research, and further supporting Israeli embassies in Mexico, Colombia and Costa Rica, Xinhua reported.

Nabam Tuki sworn-in as Arunachal CM

Congress leader Nabam Tuki has been sworn-in as the eighth Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh for the second consecutive term.

Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Nirbhay Sharma yesterday administered the oath of office and secrecy to Tuki in a function held at Darbar Hall of Raj Bhavan here.

Soldier killed, two injured in Jammu

A soldier was killed and two were injured in a guerrilla attack near the international border in Jammu and Kashmir Sunday, an official said Monday.

Two soldiers were injured Sunday in a landmine explosion in the Akhnoor area of the international border in the state. Sources said a patrol party had gone to evacuate the injured soldiers when it came under attack.

The patrol party was targeted by terrorists in Akhnoor area at 11 a.m. Sunday, Defence spokesman Col. Manish Mehta told IANS, adding Sepoy Bhikale was killed in this attack.

A high alert has been sounded in the area.

Indonesia hosts conference on n-test ban

A two-day conference on nuclear test ban for Southeast Asia and Pacific Far East regions commenced Monday in Indonesia, attracting 50 experts from 21 countries.

The conference, ‘Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) – Regional Conference for States in Southeast Asia, the Pacific and Far East’, is being attended by officials from the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs, UN Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament, and representatives from the European Union (EU), acording to Xinhua.

Facebook has employed Chris Hartley and Bret Welch , founders of startup company, Switchcam that focused on video sharing.

Switchcam’s site now says ‘Switchcam has been shut down’ with both its founders now employed by Facebook as product managers.

According to Techcrunch, Facebook has declined to comment on the matter which is atypical for the organization for when it makes acquihires.

Damaged underwater vehicle for MH370 hunt reaches port

Australian Defence Vessel (ADV) Ocean Shield has arrived at Geraldton, Western Australia, to receive spare parts related to the transponder mounted on it and the transponder mounted on the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) Bluefin 21, the Joint Agency Coordination Centre (JACC) said in a statement Monday.

The ADV Ocean Shield and the Bluefin-21 have been deployed for the ongoing search for the missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 in the southern Indian Ocean off the west coast of Australia.

Spider silk inspires stronger adhesives

The Akron scientists created synthetic duplicates of the super-sticky, silk “attachment discs” that spiders use to attach their webs to surfaces. These discs are created when spiders pin down an underlying thread of silk with additional threads, like stiches or staples, explains Ali Dhinojwala, UA’s H.A. Morton professor of polymer science and lead researcher on the project.
