Global food and beverages firm PepsiCo has tied up with former US president Bill Clinton-run The Clinton Foundation to spur social and economic development in emerging markets like India.

The partnership’s inaugural project was launched in Maharashtra, India with an agriculture initiative to source vitamin-rich cashew fruit from smallholder farmers.

This arrangement is expected to create an important new ingredient supply for PepsiCo’s local juice business and also help get better prices for cashew growers.

Women with diabetes at higher heart disease risk: Study

Women with diabetes are 44 percent more likely to develop coronary heart disease (CHD) than men with diabetes, a large global study has revealed.

“Taken together, these data provide convincing evidence that diabetes poses a greater relative risk for cardiovascular diseases in women than in men,” said professor Rachel Huxley from University of Queensland in Australia.

The data used stretches back almost 50 years, from 1966 to 2011, and includes 64 studies, 858,507 people and 28,203 CHD events.

Documents from a US federal court reveal that Microsoft has successfully challenged FBI’s request seeking information of one of its cloud customers.

According to CNET, the documents revealed that late last year, Microsoft received a National Security Letter which was with regard of one of its customers, seeking basic subscriber information.

The NSL received by the tech giant included a gag order, which prevented the company from notifying its customer about the request, which urged Microsoft to take legal action.

SpiceJet close to selling some overseas slots to Qatar Airways

Gulf carrier Qatar Airways is likely to invest in the debt-ridden SpiceJet by purchasing its parking slots overseas, sources said. Officials of the state-run Qatar Investment Promotion Authority are likely to meet the top brass of SpiceJet shortly, they added. The Kalanithi Maran-promoted domestic airline had earlier this week said it was in “advanced stage of discussions” with an overseas entity for capital infusion.

A benchmark index of Indian equities markets surged 206.39 points or 0.85 percent Friday as capital goods and oil and gas stocks gain.

Good buying was observed in capital goods, oil and gas, metal and IT sectors, while selling pressure was observed in consumer durables and banking sectors.

The 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 24,535.14 points, was trading at 24,580.79 points in the pre-noon session, up 206.39 points or 0.85 percent from the previous day’s close at 24,374.40 points.

New molecule can tackle antibiotic-resistant bacteria

Joining the global fight against antibiotic-resistant bacteria, Canadian scientists have identified a small molecule that prevents bacteria from forming into biofilms, a frequent cause of infections.

The anti-biofilm peptide works on a range of bacteria including many that cannot be treated by antibiotics.

“Currently there is a severe problem with antibiotic-resistant organisms. Our entire arsenal of antibiotics is gradually losing effectiveness,” said Bob Hancock, a professor from University of British Columbia.
