Karnataka legislature session from June 23

A 30-working day session of Karnataka Legislature would begin on June 23, state Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister TB Jayachandra on Wednesday said.

Briefing reporters after a cabinet meeting, he said the session would last till July 30.

“For the first time in the recent past, Karnataka will be holding 30-working day legislature session,” he said.

Siddaramaiah government was keen on conducting at least 60 days of legislature session in the year, he said.

Former Union minister Basangouda Patil Yatnal arrested in riot case

Former Union minister and state BJP leader Basangouda Patil Yatnal, booked in a rioting case in connection with a communal clash here on May 26, was arrested on Wednesday, a top police officer said.

“We have arrested Yatnal for his alleged involvement in a communal clash which took place here a couple of days back,” IGP (Northern Range) Bhaskar Rao told PTI here.

A case of rioting was registered against Yatnal and 29 others in connection with a communal incident, he said.

Hyundai-Kia surpasses Honda as ‘greenest’ automaker

The Union of Concerned Scientists has named Hyundai-Kia as the greenest automaker, which has beat Honda.

The scientists’ group has ranked the eight top-selling automakers based on carbon and smog-forming emissions of their fleets, who they say have reduced pollution for the first time, Fox News reported.

Hyundai-Kia beat Honda by equipping many models with smaller turbocharged engines and the researchers said that the automaker introduced gas-electric hybrid versions of its two top-selling models, the Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima.

Top food retailers accumulate Rs 13,000 cr loss in FY14: Crisil

Top 10 food retailers, including Reliance Fresh, Aditya Birla Retail, Wal-Mart India and Bharti Retail, have registered accumulated losses of over Rs 13,000 crore in the last fiscal, ratings agency Crisil said on Wednesday.

“Accumulated losses of food retailers are estimated to have crossed Rs 13,000 crore in the last fiscal, an analysis by CRISIL Ratings of top 10 food retailers that are in gestation phase showed,” a Crisil statement said.

Environment clearance to Aranmula airport project cancelled

The National Green Tribunal today set aside the Centre’s Environmental Clearance to the controversial Rs 2,000 crore private airport project at Aranmula in Kerala and directed the promoters to stop the construction work at the site.

The Southern Bench of the Tribunal comprising Justice M Chokkalingam and Expert Member R Nagendran passed the order on a petition by Aranmula Heritage Village Protection Action Council which opposed the project, meant to provide airlink to famous hill shrine of Lord Ayyappa at Sabarimala, contending that it would cause damage to environment.

Meet the beer-making robot called Bar Mixvah

A new robot has been designed which uses a complex technology to mix and pour drinks.

Yu Jiang Tham, who works for Apple, had built the robot named Bar Mixvah as a means of teaching himself to use new software and he added that it is great fun to use the robot at parties, Metro.co.uk reported.

The robot has been printed entirely from a 3D printer and can take drinks requests via iPad. (ANI)

Cabinet to finalise Parliament session schedule today

The Union Cabinet will meet here today to decide on the date of inaugural session of the 16th Lok Sabha.

The session expected to commence from next month, will also discuss the process of election of speaker and other formalities for the constitution of new Lok Sabha.

The first session will witness election of the new speaker and the joint address by the President to the two houses. (ANI)

Oz papers publish Duchess Kate’s ‘infamous’ bare bottom snap

Some Australian papers have published the Duchess of Cambridge’s infamous bare bottom photograph.

The Sydney Daily Telegraph made no heed to the calls for royal privacy and published the images under the headline ‘My bare lady: Derri-heir to the throne is fair game,’ Daily Star reported.

Germany’s best-selling tabloid Bild was also one of the papers which printed the embarrassing photograph in their publication.

The 32-year-old royal’s bottom was left exposed after a blast of air from helicopter blades blew her dress up during last month’s royal tour of Australia. (ANI)

A new review of hundreds of chemical analyses of Moon rocks indicates that the amount of water in the Moon’s interior varies regionally – revealing clues about how water originated and was redistributed in the Moon.

These discoveries provide a new tool to unravel the processes involved in the formation of the Moon, how the lunar crust cooled, and its impact history.

This is not liquid water, but water trapped in volcanic glasses or chemically bound in mineral grains inside lunar rocks.

Rupee up 7 paise against dollar in early trade

The rupee strengthened by seven paise to 58.86 against the dollar in early trade today at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market on increased selling of the US currency by exporters.

The local currency had gained 11 paise to close at 58.93 per dollar yesterday following late selling of the American currency by exporters amid stable local equities.

Forex dealers said besides increased dollar selling by exporters, strength in other currencies against the American currency overseas also supported the rupee but a lower opening of the domestic equity market capped the gains.

Sensex down 78 points in early trade; Infosys tanks 6%

The benchmark BSE Sensex declined by nearly 78 points in early trade today as several stocks suffered losses on selling by funds and retail investors ahead of monthly expiry in the derivatives segment.

The 30-share barometer, which had gained 6.58 points in yesterday’s choppy trade, moved down by 77.78 points, or 0.32 per cent, to 24,478.31 with IT, auto, PSUs, metal and banking stocks leading the fall.

Also, the National Stock Exchange index Nifty shed 13.25 points, or 0.18 per cent, to 7,316.40.

‘Judge me by my work’, says Smriti Irani

Responding to Congress leader Ajay Maken’s comments on her qualification, Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani on Thursday requested people to judge her for her work.

“Extraneous circumstances have been created to ensure that my attention is deviated from the body of work I have been entrusted with. I have been judged by my organisation on the capacity to deliver on assignments,” she said.

“Humbly request all to do that. Judge me by my work, I would only say this,” she added.

Maken had stated that HRD Minister Smriti Irani was ‘not even a graduate’.

Tai Chi may help slow aging process

Researchers have claimed that Tai Chi, a traditional Chinese martial art and sport, was found to be beneficial in increasing the numbers of an important type of cell when three groups of young people were tested to discover the benefits of Tai Chi, brisk walking or no exercise.

The group performing Tai Chi saw a rise in their cluster of differentiation 34 expressing (CD34+) cells, a stem cell important to a number of the body’s functions and structures.

Masjid spreads Islamic teachings in Kannada

Bangladesh flagged off Teesta water sharing, boundary issues with India

Bangladesh has raised the issue of two pacts which are in anticipation of with India, the Teesta waters agreement and the Land Boundary Agreement with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and hopes he will be able to deliver on them.

The Speaker of the Bangladesh Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury Parliament in an interview to a newspaper on Tuesday said, “We have walked-the-talk with regard to Teesta waters and the Land Boundary pact. These are pending issues and we’re hopeful that these will be resolved in the near future.”

KCR may challenge PM on Polavaram

K. Chandrasekhar Rao, Telangana Chief Minister-to-be designated said the Centre was contemplating to bring in an ordinance to amalgamate the villages which were deferred by the Manmohan Singh Government.

“When I got the information, I spoke to a close aide of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and informed him that this was not the right step. It (Ordinance) cannot be Okayed in the present form and in this manner. Such an anti-constitution decision should not be taken at the first Cabinet,” he remarked.

Two more attempts for IAS aspitants

L&T Minister glims a sigh of relief to Vodafone on tax disputes

On Tuesday, the new law and telecom minister hinted that his government may avoid retrospective taxation and provide stable policies so that there are no qualms for foreign investors.

The comment offers a glimmer of hope on sorting out the long drawn tax dispute with British mobile operator Vodafone.

Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters on assuming charge of the law ministry at Shastri Bhavan that, “Retrospectivity in law should normally be avoided, as it is very evident that India needs foreign investment.”

Jaitley nod for inflation, wow to revive growth

Reserve Bank of India governor Raghuram Rajan and Finance minister Arun Jaitley, who will share a crucial bond as the Narendra Modi government seeks to revive the economy and tame prices, were cautious to speak the language of balance with the next monetary policy announcement due in less than a week.

Jaitley spoke of “balancing” the fight against inflation with the need to nurture growth after they met in Delhi on Tuesday.

Modi use business the way out with Pak

Prime Minister Narendra Modi maintained a tough stance on terrorism in his meeting with his counterpart Nawaz Sharif. On Tuesday, in the bilateral meeting held here, Modi said that India is prepared to go for full trade normalization with Pakistan based on the road map already agreed to by both countries.

Simultaneously, Modi asked Sharif to speedily try and punish those found guilty in the 26/11 attack on Indian Parliament and also prevent its territory from being used to spread terror against India.
