Market cap of top 7 Sensex firms down by Rs 90,452 crore

The top seven Sensex companies saw a cumulative loss of Rs 90,452.18 crore in their market capitalisation (m-cap) last week, with energy majors ONGC and RIL taking the steepest hit.

The seven companies whose market valuation eroded in the week ended Friday (May 30) include RIL, ONGC, ITC, CIL, SBI, Infosys and ICICI Bank.

On the other hand, TCS, HDFC Bank and new entrant in the top 10 list Larsen & Toubro made gains.

The market capitalisation of ONGC dropped Rs 25,024.81 crore to Rs 3,23,611.41 crore, while RIL suffered a loss of Rs 20,266.28 crore to Rs 3,44,284.41 crore.

Modi greets Telangana people, first chief minister

Assuring his full support to India’s 29th state, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday said Telangana was born due to years of struggle and sacrifices and congratulated its first Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhara Rao.

“India gets a new state! We welcome Telangana as our 29th state. Telangana will add strength to our development journey in the coming years,” the prime minister tweeted minutes after Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan administered the oath of office and secrecy to Rao.

First meeting of SIT on black money to be held today

The first high-level meeting of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on black money and special probe into cases of unaccounted funds stashed by Indians abroad, will be held here today.

The meeting, to be chaired by Justice (Retd.) MB Shah, will be attended by SIT Vice-Chairman Justice (Retd.) Arijit Pasayat and top officials of 11 high-profile agencies and departments.

According to sources from the media reports the meeting is expected to discuss policy matters on combating the menace of black money and the status of ongoing probes.

The Maulana Azad National Urdu University (Manuu) was set up by the Central government in 1996. It was in 1949 that English replaced Urdu as a medium of instruction in Osmania University after about a quarter century.

AP Government makes provisional allocation of buildings in Hyderabad

With just two days left behind for the separate Telangana and (new) Andhra Pradesh states to come into existence, on Friday, the AP government made provisional allocation of several buildings which would house the Legislative Assembly, Legislative Council, and Secretariat to the two successor states.

The A, B, C and D Blocks on the existing Secretariat premises have been allocated for Telangana and J, K, L, H (South) and H (North) blocks for Andhra Pradesh. The AP government also allocated provisionally the office space to the departments of Secretariat of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Fish kill at lake raises stench

Bangalore Development Authority and BBMP officials were found passing the buck for the damaged Gowdanapalya Lake bund, which resulted in large scale fish kill in Dorekere.

As officials are indulged in blame game, at least 20,000 fish were found dead in Dorekere on Friday. According to Morning walkers, since Wednesday one lakh fish have died.

Outer Ring Road- a Crime spot

The gruesome incident of a woman being stabbed and thrown on the Outer Ring Road on Thursday necessitates for more patrol vehicles on the highway, say the Cyberabad traffic police.

Presently, only five patrol vehicles are operating on the 75-km stretch with each vehicle covering 15 km 24×7.
At first the Cyberabad traffic police had tied up with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority, and had introduced five vehicles saying that more will be procured later. It is almost five months now and there are no signs of more patrol vehicles.

Social media website Facebook wants to patent a system, which would allow children to create accounts with parental supervision.

According to Politico, the patent application describes how a child seeking to join Facebook would first have to get a parent’s approval through the parent’s own Facebook account.

A Chinese entrepreneur has patented the first ever suitcase scooter that can travel upto 37 miles on a single charge.

The electric suitcase scooter, which has been built by He Liangcai, can go as fast as 12mph and has a GPS and an alarm, ABC News reported.

Green tea daily reduces pancreatic cancer risk: Study

The cup of your favourite green tea is full of health benefits and now researchers have found that an active compound in green tea also reduces the risk of pancreatic cancer.

In lab research, EGCG, the active biologic constituent in green tea, changed the metabolism of pancreatic cancer cells by suppressing the expression of the LDHA enzyme associated with cancer.

The researchers also found an enzyme inhibitor, oxamate – known to reduce LDHA activity – operated in the same manner: It also disrupted the metabolic system of pancreatic cancer cells.
