Anupam Kher to shoot with SRK for his TV show

Shah Rukh Khan’s rise from being a TV actor to becoming the second richest actor in the world with a net worth of $600 million, makes him an interesting subject for an inspirational chat show. No wonder then that Anupam Kher has invited the superstar for his show “…Kucch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai”.

The actors will shoot here Thursday for an episode that’s likely to air on Colors in July.

According to a source from the show’s set, “Anupam Kher has been very keen to feature SRK on the show because the story of his rise to fame is one of the most inspirational and endearing ones”.

Gold bars seized at Dhaka airport

Officials at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Dhaka, seized 48 gold bars from a cargo hold off a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight Thursday.

The Dhaka-bound aircraft from Dubai was raided at 3.00 a.m after it landed, BD News 24 quoted customs assistant commissioner Md Ruhul Amin as saying.

The gold bars weigh 5.5 kg in all and are valued at Tk 25 million ($321,875), Amin said.

However, no one has been arrested or detained yet.

The gold bars were found hanging from a black cloth inside the cargo hold of the aircraft, Amin said. IANS

Sahara thanks apex court for asset de-freeze

The Sahara Group has thanked the Supreme Court for lifting the freeze on its moveable and immovable assets so that it can raise the Rs.10,000 crore for part payment of dues, but also said it had repaid the bulk of money owed to investors.

“We are very thankful we got clearance of bank accounts and certain select properties,” Sudeep Seth, Sahara’s lawyer, said in a statement on the behalf of the group after the Supreme Court gave it the go-ahead Wednesday for sale of its assets in India.

Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah calls on Modi, Sadananda Gowda

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah Wednesday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister DV Sadananda Gowda in the national capital and discussed various issues pertaining to the state, an official said.

“Siddaramaiah called on Modi at the latter’s office and congratulated him for becoming the prime minister. He also discussed issues pertaining to the state, including the language policy and the Cauvery river water sharing with neighbouring states,” an official of the chief minister’s office in Bangalore told IANS.

Sensex extends losses for second day, drops 103 points

Extending losses for the second straight day, the benchmark BSE Sensex fell by another 103 points in early trade Thursday on selling mainly in banking, auto, realty and refinery sector stocks on the back of lower Asian cues.

ICICI Bank slipped by 1.72 percent and HDFC Bank by 1.54 percent as the stock also turned ex-dividend today.

The Sensex resumed slightly higher at 24,828.38 and moved in a range of 24,664.88 and 24,831.79 before quoting at 24,702.38 at 1000 hours, showing a loss of 103.45 points, or 0.42 percent, from its last close.

Dad’s drinking habit does influence son’s alcohol intake

A new study from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine has found that a son’s vulnerability for alcohol use disorders could be shaped by a father who chronically drinks to excess even before conception.

The research show male mice that were chronically exposed to alcohol before breeding had male offspring that were less likely to consume alcohol and were more sensitive to its effects, providing new insight into inheritance and development of drinking behaviors.

NMDC hikes iron ore prices by up to Rs 300 a tonne

State-run miner NMDC has raised iron ore prices by Rs 250-300 a tonne for June allegedly aimed at cashing in on subdued domestic supply scenario, a move that might stoke steel prices.

A company source said NMDC has raised the price of lump variety, which contains more iron and used mostly by domestic steel makers, by Rs 300 per tonne and by Rs 250 per tonne for fines or lower grade iron ore.

Following the hike, fines price will go up to Rs 3,160 a tonne from Rs 2,910 earlier and lump prices to Rs 4,600 per tonne from Rs 4,300 a tonne a month ago.

SC allows Supertech to remove materials from sealed towers

The Supreme Court today allowed real estate major Supertech Ltd to remove construction materials from its sealed 40-storey twin towers in NOIDA to ensure safety of the residents and others.

A bench of justices J S Khehar and C Nagappan allowed the plea of Supertech Ltd that keeping the safety aspects in mind, the construction materials and equipments at the site need to be removed.

The Allahabad High Court had earlier ordered demolition of the 40-storey residential twin towers.

Air India registers growth in revenue in May

Air India has registered an increase both in terms of the number of passengers carried by it and its revenue in May this year as against the corresponding period last year, its spokesman said today.

May this year has proved to be “another good month” for the national carrier with its passenger revenue per day jumping by nearly 20 percent from last year’s Rs 38 crore to Rs 44 crore this year.

The average number of passengers carried by the airline in May also increased by five percent from 45,230 last year to 47,700.

Unclear Companies Act would make things worse: CII

Seeking a comprehensive review of the new Companies Act, industry body CII today said that an “unclear and cumbersome” law would make things worse for the corporates.

“The government needs to trust industry. One or two incidence of corporate malfeasance should not lead to mistrust of the entire spectrum of corporate India and should not make normal business activities difficult,” CII President Ajay Shriram said in a statement.

Brain protein linked to depression in pre-menopausal women

Women nearing menopause have higher levels of a brain protein linked to depression than both younger and menopausal women, according to a study published in the US journal JAMA Psychiatry Wednesday.

The findings may explain the high rates of first-time depression seen among women in this transitional stage of life known as perimenopause, said the study by researchers at Canada’s Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Xinhua reported.

Sensex up 26 pts in early trade on funds buying

The benchmark BSE Sensex recovered by nearly 26 points in early trade today after yesterday’s fall as funds and investors bought stocks of power, metal, infrastructure, consumer durables and realty companies amidst a mixed trend in Asian markets.

The 30-share index, which had retreated from the record closing high by falling 52.76 points yesterday, recovered by 25.96 points, or 0.10 per cent, to 24,831.79 in the opening trade.

In a similar fashion, the broader National Stock Exchange index Nifty moved up by 12.30 points, or 0.17 per cent, to 7,414.55.

Putin to attend D-Day commemorations: Hollande

Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend a commemoration ceremony of the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, French President Francois Hollande said.

Hollande said he invited Putin “in consultation with partners” despite the Ukrainian crisis, Xinhua reported.

The D-Day or Normandy landings, codenamed Operation Neptune, were the largest seaborne operations conducted June 6, 1944, during World War II. The operation began the invasion of German-occupied western Europe which led to the restoration of the French Republic.

Android said to get touch-ready Office, before Windows: Report

The leading mobile OS Android is said to incorporate touch-ready Office before Windows.

According to TechCrunch, tablet-touch build of Office for Android will land before the touch-ready build for Windows.

Microsoft declined to comment on this issue.

However, Microsoft al ready offers an app for Android that includes Office capabilities called Office Mobile.

The expected touch-for-office is said to release in early 2015, the same time Threshold , said to be called Windows 9, is expected to release, the report said. (ANI)

Researchers have said that young men who use cannabis may be putting their fertility at risk by inadvertently affecting the size and shape of their sperm.

In the world’s largest study to investigate how common lifestyle factors influence the size and shape of sperm (referred to as sperm morphology), a research team from the Universities of Sheffield and Manchester also found that sperm size and shape was worse in samples ejaculated in the summer months but was better in men who had abstained from sexual activity for more than six days.

Man of Indian-origin sentenced to life for wife’s murder

An Indian-origin man in Newzealand has been sentenced to life for killing his estranged wife while he was on bail, The New Zealand Herald reported Thursday.

The High Court at Wellington Thursday sentenced Rajeshwar Singh, 47, to a mandatory life sentence with a minimum non-parole period of 16 years, and a concurrent sentence of three months’ jail.

Safe Schools move in Nigeria attracts hefty funding

The Safe Schools Initiative in Nigeria has attracted significant funding since the abduction of more than 200 school girls by a militant organisation, the UN announced.

The Safe Schools Initiative has already gathered more than $23 million which will be used to ensure that schools, particularly in the north Nigeria, are protected from any kind of attack and also to take measures for the safety of girls and boys, Xinhua quoted UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric as saying.

The announcement was made Wednesday by UN Secretary General’s special envoy for global education, Gordon Brown.

Rupee up 6 paise against dollar in early trade

The rupee appreciated by 6 paise to 59.27 against the dollar in early trade today at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market on increased selling of the American currency by exporters.

Besides, a higher opening in the domestic equity market and gains in other Asian currencies against the dollar also supported the rupee.

The rupee had closed five paise higher at 59.33 yesterday on fag-end dollar selling by banks and exporters on hopes of good foreign capital inflows into equities.
