Telangana, AP may lose 700 MBBS seats

More than 700 MBBS seats will be cancelled in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states if the medical colleges fail to improve their infrastructure facilities as indicated by the Medical Council of India.

Global food prices drop 3.2% in May

Global food prices fell by 3.2 per cent in May, the second consecutive month of fall, on account of a sharp decline in costs of dairy, cereals and vegetable oils, according to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

The FAO’s price index, which measures monthly price changes for a basket of grains, oilseeds, dairy, meat and sugar, averaged 207.8 points last month as compared with 214.6 points in May 2013, falling nearly 3.2 per cent.

General Motors India today launched a limited edition of its entry level compact car Chevrolet Spark priced up to Rs 3.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Man drowns in Godavari river in Nashik

A 23-year-old devotee from Mumbai drowned in Godavari river here after he entered the waters for a holy dip, police said Friday.

The incident took place on Wednesday night when Bhavik Ashok Jain, a resident of Mazgaon in Mumbai could not judge the water level and was swept away in the heavy current, they said.

Jain was fished out yesterday from the Talkuteshwar temple area by fire personnel.

The river was flooded as the irrigation department had released water from Gangapur dam as per routine-rotation, police added.PTI

A new study has revealed that sleep after learning strengthens connections between brain cells and enhances memory.

Researchers at NYU Langone Medical Center have shown for the first time that sleep after learning encourages the growth of dendritic spines, the tiny protrusions from brain cells that connect to other brain cells and facilitate the passage of information across synapses, the junctions at which brain cells meet.

Moreover, the activity of brain cells during deep sleep, or slow-wave sleep, after learning is critical for such growth.

Violence at Amritsar’s Golden Temple as SGPC supporters, Sikh radical groups clash

Violence erupted in the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar on Friday, when a task force of the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabhandak Committee ( SGPC) clashed with Sikh radical groups.

The clash took place after various groups staged protests over Simranjit Singh Mann, the head of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Mann Group), attempting to give a speech from the rostrum of the Akal Takht in the complex.

Television reports said that at least twelve people were injured in the clash. Media persons were also assaulted during the skirmish, the reports further said.

Egypt introduces new sexual harassment laws

Egypt has introduced new laws against sexual harassment in an effort to bring down the escalating menace.

In an order issued by outgoing interim President Adly Mansour, the punishment for sexual harassment now is up to five years in jail, the BBC reported.

Longer sentences can also be issued for offenders who hold a position of power over their victims such being armed with a weapon or a senior person at work.

Offenders who repeat the act would face double terms.

Beside the jail term, the offenders would also be fined up to 5,000 Egyptian pounds ($714).

Economy to grow by 6.2% in 2014-15: E&Y

The economic growth rate will improve to 6.2 percent in current fiscal and can go up to 8 percent in the next three years on back of favourable domestic and global environment, tax consultancy firm Ernst & Young (E&Y) said.

“A combination of structural correction, confidence in new government and favourable global conditions could propel economic growth to beyond 8 percent in three years,” it said.

The economic growth rate remained below 5 percent for the second year in a row recording 4.7 percent in 2013-14.

Canadian police charges three in Air India bribery case

Canadian police has charged two Americans and one British businessman of Indian origin with trying to bribe Indian officials to secure a $100 million contract with Air India for a biometric security system.

British national Shailesh Govindia, and Americans Robert Barra, former chief executive officer of Cryptometrics Canada Inc, and Dario Berini, the company’s former chief operating officer were charged Wednesday after an international investigation, according to Ottawa Citizen.
