What if a watch can monitor a patient’s vital signs and other physiological parameters?

Researchers from the Netherlands and Israel have developed two new wearable devices that use changing patterns of scattered light to monitor biometrics.

While one device tracks glucose concentration and dehydration levels, the other monitors pulse.

The glucose sensor is the first wearable device that can measure glucose concentration directly but non-invasively.

Jaguar Land Rover sales rise 20% in May to 38,831 units

Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover Wednesday reported a 20 percent increase in global sales to 38,831 units in May.

The Jaguar brand sold 6,450 units, up 4 percent, while Land Rover sold 32,381 units, a growth of 23 percent, the company said in a statement.

JLR’s sales rose 53 percent in China, while in North America it was up 19 percent, the UK up 15 percent, Asia Pacific up 11 percent, and Europe up 8 percent, it said.

“What we found is that social influence matters. It leads nonsmoking friends into smoking and nonsmoking friends can turn smoking friends into nonsmokers,” said Steven Haas, an associate professor of sociology and demography at Pennsylvania State University in the US.

How brain regulates CO2 levels in blood

A specific group of neurons found in a region of the brain are involved in detecting and maintaining adequate levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in blood and in modulating the activity of the neuronal groups that control respiratory activity, a study showed.

CO2 is important for regulating the acid-base balance of the blood. When the concentration of this gas becomes higher than normal, the blood tends to become more acidic.

“It promotes the activation of specialised sensors called chemoreceptors,” said Eduardo Colombari, a professor at Sao Paulo State University in Brazil.

Govt keeping close watch on onion, milk prices

With onion and milk prices showing an upward cue, the government today said it is closely watching the trend and will take appropriate steps to ensure adequate availability of these commodities in the domestic market.

“Onion and milk are important. We are closely observing the price trend and an appropriate action will follow, whenever required,” Commerce Secretary Rajeev Kher told reporters here.

He was replying to a question whether the government is mulling any export restriction considering the possibility of deficit monsoon and rising prices.

India-EU mango issue: EU team visiting India in Sept

Amid temporary import ban of Alphonso mangoes, a team of experts from Europe is likely to visit India in September to check the measures put in place by the country.

“In September, a European team is likely to visit us. That is the time when they will go through the whole technical infrastructure of the country and the technical processes which certify fruits and vegetables,” Commerce Secretary Rajeev Kher told reporters here.

In April, the 28-member European Union had temporarily banned the import of Alphonso mangoes and four vegetables from India from May 1.

Kids who are raised by single parents are far more likely to get fat, as revealed by new finding.

According to the study that measured children’s health and learning, more than 35 per cent of children with a lone parent were overweight or obese, compared with 24 per cent of kids those living in couple families, News.com.au reported.

Commerce Ministry for easing of gold import norms

The Commerce Ministry today pitched for easing of gold import norms to increase the availability of the metal in the domestic market and boost exports.

Commerce Secretary Rajeev Kher said the ministry has spoken to the Finance Ministry on the matter and it is “under their consideration”.

“There is a need of rationalisation in (gold import) duty and (gold import) procedure…. We have already made it clear that there is a need to look at the current gold import regime,” he told reporters here.

Sensex recovers 56 points ahead of IIP data

The BSE Sensex today gained nearly 56 points in early trade on selective buying in oil, IT and banking stocks ahead of industrial output data for April to be released later in the day.

The 30-share index, which had retreated from record high by losing almost 110 points in the last session, recovered 55.77 points, or 0.22 per cent, to 25,529.66 in early trade.

The National Stock Exchange Nifty moved up by 4.35 points, or 0.06 per cent, to 7,631.20. It breached 7,700 level for the first time yesterday.

Cabinet subcommittee formed to look into terror cases against Muslims

The State government has fulfilled one of its major promises in the manifesto by constituting a Cabinet subcommittee for looking into cases of Muslim youths being arrested on charges of terrorism, and get them released if found innocent.

The Congress had in its manifesto promised to form a committee headed by a retired high court judge for studying such cases for early release of the innocent. But sources in the Home Ministry told that the government finally decided on a Cabinet subcommittee, which will have more constitutional powers.

MH CM promises Fast-track court in Mohsin’s murder case

New vehicle registrations delayed in Telangana
