A ‘different’ life possible on Saturn’s moon Titan

Awash with seas of liquid methane, Saturn’s moon Titan could harbour methane-based, oxygen-free life, guess scientists.

A team of Cornell University researchers have modelled a ‘different’ type of life form – which is oxygen-free and methane-based – that can metabolise and reproduce similar to life on earth.

Their theorised cell membrane is composed of small organic nitrogen compounds and capable of functioning in liquid methane temperatures of 292 degrees below zero.

The new model, which would be a “pedal assist” bike in which the rider’s strength is augmented by the engine on hills and when they want to go fast, have proved increasingly popular among commuters as they prove a degree of exercise while avoiding the need for a shower after arriving at work, the Independent reported.

Curiosity rover’s proof of methane on Mars fuels speculation of life on planet

NASA’s curiosity rover has confirmed the existence of methane on the Mars’ atmosphere which may hint that life existed on the Red planet.

The tunable laser spectrometer in the SAM (Sample Analysis at Mars) instrument of the Curiosity robot has unequivocally detected an episodic increase in the concentration of methane in Mars’ atmosphere after an exhaustive analysis of data obtained during 605 soles or Martian days.

This puts an end to the long controversy on the presence of methane in Mars, which started over a decade ago when this gas was first detected with telescopes from Earth.

Mosquitoes’ sexual biology key to Malaria transmission

The clue to why Anopheles mosquitoes are unique in their ability to transmit malaria to humans could be found in their evolution of sexual biology.

Through analysis of 16 Anopheles genomes, the researchers found that these mosquitoes’ reproductive traits evolved along with their capacity to transmit the Plasmodium parasite that causes malaria.

Study linking malaria transmission, mosquitoes` sexual biology may yield new target for control

A new study has revealed that malaria transmission is linked to mosquitoes’ sexual biology, which can lead to new methods of disease control, particularly in regions hardest hit by it.

Researchers at Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health and University of Perugia, Italy found that Anopheles mosquitoes’ reproductive traits evolved along with their capacity to transmit the Plasmodium parasite that causes malaria.

Leg muscle from cells grown in lab

A team of researchers from Italy, Israel and Britain has succeeded in generating mature, functional skeletal muscles in mice using a new approach for tissue engineering.
