Saudi Arabia recruits 1800 Indian nurses

Saudi Arabia, facing a dearth of trained female nurses, has recruited 2,100 nurses, including 1,800 from India, to work in various government hospitals across the gulf nation.

Hired on one year renewable contract, the nurses arriving from India and the Philippines would assume their duties within a month after completing recruitment procedures, Director of the health ministry’s nursing department Ilham Sindi was quoted as saying by the Saudi Gazette.

Indian sentenced to life for murdering wife in New Zealand

A 47-year-old Indian-origin man in New Zealand was today sentenced to life for murdering his estranged wife while he was out on bail for breaching a protection order she had taken against him.

The High Court in Wellington sentenced Rajeshwar Singh to a mandatory life sentence with a minimum non-parole period of 16 years and a concurrent sentence of three months’ jail for breaching two protection orders.

Singh, a taxi driver, pleaded guilty in May to killing Sarwan Lata and two charges of breaching protection orders, the New Zealand Herald reported.

Man of Indian-origin sentenced to life for wife’s murder

An Indian-origin man in Newzealand has been sentenced to life for killing his estranged wife while he was on bail, The New Zealand Herald reported Thursday.

An Indian national in Qatar has been sentenced to 40 lashes and his driving licence ordered to be suspended for two months by a Qatari Criminal Court for consuming liquor and driving under its influence, media reported.

The unnamed Indian was caught by a police patrol while he was parking his vehicle in Shabiyat Khalifa area near Qatar’s capital Doha, Gulf Times reported Tuesday citing local Arabic daily Arrayah.

Police found him to be under the influence of alcohol and also found a half-empty bottle of liquor in the car, the report said.

Indian man living in Bahrain for 23 years dies

A 58-year-old Indian man who lived in solitude for 23 years in Bahrain without leaving the country even once has died and will be buried in his adopted homeland.

Porathala Kesavan Joshi Kumar from Kerala, who was not in touch with his family for years, is believed to have suffered from poor eyesight and died after falling in his home.

The stepmother of Kumar has agreed for his burial in Bahrain, the Gulf Daily News report said.

UK-band finding ways to mix Indian with underground music

Highly influenced by Indian classical music, members of the UK-based music band Engine-Earz Experiment say they are finding ways of mixing various genres of Indian music with underground music.

“Both Kabir and I are greatly influenced by Indian classical music. We try to bring the same passion into our big bass lines,” Prash Mistry, founder of the band, told PTI.

Band member Kabir Kainth has been trained in classical tabla in India.

US house resolution commits to working with new Indian government

As the US reaches out to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a dozen lawmakers have introduced a bipartisan congressional resolution committing to working with his government “to advance shared values and interests”.

Co-sponsored among others by lone Indian-American House member Ami Bera and the first Hindu-American lawmaker Tulsi Gabbard, the resolution also seeks “to further strengthen our strategic partnership with India, including in the defence, trade, and security arenas”.

Indian man found dead at home in UAE

An Indian expatriate was found dead in an apparent suicide at his room in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a media report said.

The body of 51-year-old Brinja Sami M.N., with a wire cord around his neck, was found by the police at his accommodation in a labour camp in Sharjah’s Al Sajjah area, The Gulf Today reported Sunday.

Sami was a construction worker in a Sharjah-based company.

Police have transferred the body to the forensic laboratory for investigation.

Police have been questioning several people known to the man.

Indian expatriate jailed for molesting woman in UAE

An Indian expatriate in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Sunday was jailed for three months for molesting a female co-worker in an elevator at their workplace, a media report said.

The Indian man, who worked as a financial analyst and identified only as K.K., 40, was convicted of indecently groping a 27-year-old fellow Indian woman in an office elevator in November last year by the Dubai Court of First Instance, the Gulf News reported Sunday.

K.K. will be deported following his imprisonment.

Indo-Canadian gangster jailed for assault

An Indian-origin gangster was sentenced to four months in jail for assaulting a fellow Indian-origin man three years ago, a media report said.

Manjit Adiwal (Mike), 35, reportedly a high profile gangster in Vancouver city in Canada, along with his associate Preetpal Sangha, 29, punched and threatened Gurpreet Sangha during a dispute at a lumber mill in Canada’s Chilliwack city in May 2011, The Vancouver Sun reported Friday.

Adiwal’s associate Preetpal Sangha was also sentenced to four months in jail after pleading guilty to uttering death threats during the same incident.

Indian-origin scientist Anil Kulkarni wins Fulbright-Nehru fellowship

Indian-origin scientist Anil Kulkarni, has been awarded with the highly competitive Fulbright -Nehru Scholarship.

Kulkarni is a professor in the Department of Surgery at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UT Health ) Medical School and his academic and professional experience gathered during his travel to India earlier, to teach immunonutrition and functional foods in the global health era, helped him grab this honor.

An Indian bus driver in the UAE has been sentenced to six months in prison for molesting a 38-year-old woman passenger.

The Court of First Instance found the defendant guilty of molestation charge. The incident happened May 3 last year in
Al Muraqqabat area in Dubai, the Khaleej Times reported. The Egyptian complainant said the accused told her to stand next to him as there were no vacant seats in the bus.

5 Indians charged with visa, financial fraud in US

Five Indians, including four from the same family, have been arrested and charged with participating in a wide-ranging student visa and financial aid fraud schemes in the United States.

Suresh Hiranandaney (60), his son Samir Hiranandaney (27), sister Anita Chabria (49), brother-in-law Lalit Chabria (54) and employee Seema Shah (41) face student visa fraud, wire fraud and student financial aid fraud.

They were presented before US Magistrate Judge Gabriel Gorenstein in Manhattan federal court here yesterday.

The charges carry prison term from five to 20 years.

Indian-American wins in spelling contest stirs racial comments

As two youngsters of Indian descent spelled history by jointly winning the coveted Scripps National Spelling Bee for a record seventh year in a row, they also stirred storm of racially charged comments in the US.

The fact that Sriram Hathwar and Ansun Sujoe Thursday night kept up the victory run of Indian-Americans that began in 1999 producing a dozen champions in the last 16 years, proved too much for some of them.

Indian man jailed for molesting passenger in Dubai

An Indian bus driver in the UAE has been sentenced to six months in jail and deportation for inappropriately touching a woman passenger.

The Court of First Instance found the defendant guilty of molestation charge, the Khaleej Times reported Thursday.

The driver earlier denied the charge saying that he did not intend to touch the woman but it happened by accident.

The incident allegedly happened May 3 last year in Al Muraqqabat area, the report said.

Indian-Americans script history; jointly win the Spelling Bee

Two Indian-Americans – Sriram J Hathwar and Ansun Sujoe – today scripted history by becoming co-champions of the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee, after a thrilling final in which they almost exhausted the 25 designated words, the first tie since 1962.

This is the seventh consecutive year that Indian- Americans have retained the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which was watched live by millions of people in the US.

An eighth grader from the Alternative School for Maths and Science, Sriram (14) is from New York, while Ansun (13) is a seventh grader from Texas.

Indian man found dead in Sharjah police station

A 20-year-old Indian man being held at a Sharjah police station for alleged involvement in theft was found hanging in his cell in an apparent suicide, police said.

The victim reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself at the Al Gharb Police station in Sharjah on Thursday, a police official said.

“The man is believed to have hanged himself to death. It appears the man used his wizar – a single piece of cloth wrapped around the waist that is worn as an undergarment,” the official was quoted as saying by the Gulf News.

Indian-Americans spell history, are co-champions in US Spelling Bee

Two Indian American youngsters made history as Sriram Hathwar and Ansun Sujoe were declared co-champions in the Scripps National Spelling Bee contest after 52 years and for just the fourth time in the contest’s history.

“Whatever,” said Sujoe, 13, 7th grader from Fort Worth, Texas, as the seconds ticked down at the contest at the National Harbour Thursday night.

He couldn’t get the word, “feuilleton,” out of his mouth, but he spelled it correctly.

Two Indian nationals jailed for shop heist in UAE

Two Indian expatriates have been jailed for an year each for breaking into a garment store in the UAE and stealing 200 cheques worth 20 million dirhams (around $5,445,539), a media report said.

An Indian executive, identified only as W.R, 32, and employed as a merchant, along with a fellow Indian, working as a salesman and identified only as S.O., 36, broke into a shop Jan 4 this year and took away 200 cheques, along with 60,000 dirhams cash, valuables worth 9,000 dirhams and four passports, Gulf News reported Thursday.

Indian national admits stealing trade secrets in US

An Indian engineer in the US has admitted to stealing trade secrets from two medical technology companies, media reported Thursday.

Ketankumar Maniar, 37, an Indian national, was arrested during a search operation by the FBI agents in June 20, 2013. A hard drive containing trade secrets of Bard and Becton companies was recovered from his hotel room in New Jersey state in north-eastern America, the Star-Ledger reported.

Maniar Wednesday pleaded guilty to two counts of theft and attempted theft of trade secrets, US Attorney Paul J. Fishman said.

Indian-origin man found ‘not guilty’ of stabbing sister 107 times

An Indian-origin man accused of stabbing his sister 107 times was acquitted of the murder and all other charges Tuesday, a media report said.

Vishnu Phagoo, 37, was arrested on the charge of stabbing his sister Shrimatie Parasram, 45, to death in her Jersey city home in New Jersey state in north-eastern United States September 2010, The Jersey Journal reported Tuesday. He was subsequently charged with the murder February 2011.
