Nine Indian Americans among Sloan research fellowship winners

Nine Indian-Americans are among 126 young US and Canadian scholars awarded $50,000 Sloan Research Fellowships honouring outstanding early-career scientists in eight fields to further their research.

Instituted in 1955 by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, these honour scholars whose achievements and potential identify them as rising stars, the next generation of scientific leaders.

Indian-origin man convicted for rape in Britain

An Indian-origin man has been convicted for raping a woman in Britain nearly two years ago, after his DNA was linked to samples recovered from the crime scene, according to media reports on Wednesday.

Hardeep Sandhu, 39, was found guilty by a jury of rape and injuring with the intention of committing grievous bodily harm to the victim, who was a prostitute at the time, the Derby Telegraph reported.

Indian-American community meet draws US politicos

Recognising the growing influence of Indian-Americans in public life, several top politicians, including three women members of the US Congress, attended the 18th biennial convention of the National Federation of Indian American Associations (NFIA).

The three-day March 6-8 meeting of the largest umbrella organization in the US, representing over 3.5 million Americans of Indian origin, in Cerritos, California was inaugurated by Indian Consul General Venkatesan Ashok and California State Treasurer John Chiang.

Indian woman run over by speeding car in UAE

A 38-year-old Indian woman in the UAE was killed on the spot when she was run over by a speeding car while crossing a road from an unauthorised area.

The police said the woman who was not identified was crossing the road in Al Khan Road in Sharjah from an unauthorised area and was run over by the car yesterday.

By the time the police and ambulance reached the scene, the woman had died, Khaleej Times reported.

The body was shifted to a nearby hospital.

Speeding car runs over Indian woman in Sharjah

An Indian woman was killed after being run over by a speeding car in the emirate of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, a media report said on Tuesday.

The police said the accident took place when the woman, 38, was crossing the road from an unauthorised area on Al Khan road on Monday evening, The Gulf Today reported.

Ambulances, patrols and traffic experts reached the site where the woman was found already dead.

Erika Menendez, a resident of Queens, pleaded guilty here before Queens Supreme Court Justice Gregory Lasak for shoving Sunando Sen, 46, to death as the subway train entered the station on the night of December 27 2012.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said Menendez had admitted committing “what is every subway commuter’s worst nightmare – being suddenly and senselessly pushed into the path of an oncoming train.”

A 56-year-old Indian pancreatic cancer researcher in Australia has been named New South Wales Woman of the year 2015 for her contributions to medical research, tertiary education and the Indian community.

Minoti Apate, researcher at University of New South Wales(UNSW)received the award from NSW Premier Mike Baird and Minister for Women Pru Goward during a reception at NSW Parliament House recently.

Indian-American Renu Khator elected head of US education body

Indian-American Renu Khator has been elected chair of the Board of Directors of the American Council on Education (ACE), the major coordinating body for US colleges and universities.

Uttar Pradesh born Khator, University of Houston President and System Chancellor since 2008, became board chair during ACE’s 97th Annual Meeting in Washington, DC Monday.

Earning a bachelor’s degree at the University of Kanpur, she received her master’s and PhD in political science from Purdue University, Indiana.

Indian origin woman in US was shot in head

An Indian-origin woman found dead at her apartment in the US last week was apparently shot in the head, the media reported.

The 37-year-old Randhir Kaur – a dental student at the University of California in San Francisco – was shot once in the head at her apartment on March 8, police said, according to a CBS San Francisco report on Sunday.

She was reported to have attended prayers at a gurdwara earlier in the day.

When Kaur did not show up the following day, her colleagues became concerned and notified a family member who went to her apartment and found her body, police said.

Indian woman sheds 32kg to win gold competition in Dubai

An Indian businesswoman has lost a whopping 32kg to win a competition here which rewarded one gram of gold for every kilo she lost.

Sharada Serigara, who beat more than 7,000 contestants in the ‘Your Child in Gold competition’, weighed 96kg before the contest and lost 32kgs in roughly two months.

Serigara won 32 grams of gold worth about 4,380 dirhams (USD 1192) in the contest organised by Dubai Municipality, Gulf News reported yesterday.

Indian worker found hanging from ceiling fan in UAE

A 29-year-old Indian worker in the UAE has allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan.

The worker was reportedly suffering from depression due to psychological and social problems which might have prompted him to end his life, Gulf News reported.

The worker committed suicide in Sharjah using a rope yesterday, the official said, adding that the body has been shifted to Kuwaiti Hospital and then to the forensic laboratory for an autopsy.

Police till now do not suspect involvement of anyone else.

Hundreds pay homage to murdered Indian techie

Hundreds of people, including family members, colleagues and central and state ministers, on Sunday paid homage to the Indian software engineer who was murdered in Australia on March 7.

The body of the 41-year-old Prabha from global IT consulting firm Mindtree was flown to the city on Saturday night. It was kept at her relative’s house for people to pay their respects.

“The last rites will be held at Prabha’s village Amtur near Mangaluru on Sunday evening,” a family member told IANS before the cortege was flown to Mangaluru by air ambulance. The village lies some 380 km away from here.

Big B ‘honoured’ to unveil historic Gandhi statue at Britain

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan was “honoured and humbled” to unveil a historic bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi here along with other dignitaries including British Prime Minister David Cameron and Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

Britain-based industrialist G.P.Hinduja was presented the inaugural NRI Foundation Award by visiting Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley here.

Indian-American doctor arrested on charges of taking kickback

An Indian-American doctor in the US has been arrested on charges of receiving kickbacks for referring patients for medical treatment.

Neil Sharma, who was arrested yesterday, faces a maximum potential penalty of up to five years in prison, a fine of up to USD 25,000, and full restitution, prosecutors said.

Indian workers on strike get their salaries in Bahrain

More than 100 foreign workers, including Indians, who went on strike here over non-payment of salaries have received their wages following the intervention of diplomats and labour officials.

The workers, who worked for Mercury Middle East firm, were on strike since February 28 and were paid the outstanding salaries on Wednesday, Gulf Daily News reported.

An Indian embassy official visited the workers at their accommodation reportedly refused to leave on Wednesday until the men were paid, it said.

Jindal sells himself as ‘full-spectrum conservative’

As he explores a 2016 presidential bid, Louisiana’s Indian-American Governor Bobby Jindal is wooing his Republican Party’s right wing by working hard to prove himself to be what he calls a “full-spectrum conservative”.

He embraced former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani after he questioned President Barack Obama’s love of country, CNBC noted.

Jindal also “endorsed the letter to Iran signed by Republican senators seeking to undercut nuclear talks, and decried Muslim no-go zones’ in Europe that the mayor of London said do not exist”.

Sydney murder: Prabha’s kin urge killer to come forward

The family of the Indian IT consultant, who was stabbed to death in a Sydney street, on Thursday appealed to the killer to come forward, a media reported.

Prabha Arun Kumar (41), employed with Bengaluru-based technology firm MindTree, was attacked at Amos Street’s Parramatta Park in western Sydney on Saturday, ABC reported.

Her husband Arun Kumar and brother Shankar Shetty have asked the public for help in finding the person who killed her.

‘Excessive force behind Indian-origin man’s death’

Excessive force used by six people to restrain an Indian-origin man in the Australian state of Queensland contributed to his death in 2012, according to the findings of an inquest, a media report said on Wednesday.

Amit Kumar, 34, died from breathing complications in 2012 after five men and one woman used zip ties to restrain him in a car park near the Mooloolaba foreshore on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, ABC News reported.

Indian employees of Bahrain hospital go without pay for months

Many Indians are among 200 employees of a hospital in Bahrain who have not been paid their salaries for months and are struggling to make ends meet, a media report said Tuesday.

“These people who work as cleaners, attenders and security men are often without food and we sometimes pool money to help,” Gulf Daily News quoted a nurse as saying.

“Many doctors — Indians and Europeans — are in a fix. They cannot leave, mainly because of their long service and dues that are owed to them,” added the nurse.
