Taj Group opens property in Dubai

Indian Hotels Company, the country’s biggest hotel firm, today announced the opening of Taj Dubai located in the Burj Khalifa downtown area in Dubai. This hotel has 296 rooms including 2 lavish suites.

The Taj group, established in 1901, has a total of 128 hotels, resorts and palaces spanning 64 locations in India and 15 international locations in four continents.

Govt will airlift the indian citizens from Yemen: Sushma Swaraj

Foreign minister Sushma Swaraj said on Sunday that Govt was preparing to airlift stuck citizens from war-torn Yemen despite the bombing of the country’s main international airport.

Some 4,100 Indians are currently in Yemen, including 3,100 in Sanaa, 500 in Aden and the rest around the country, the minister said.

According to sources air evacuations would take place from Yemen, which has been dove into chaos by a Huthi Shiite rebellion that has triggered Saudi-backed airstrikes on the capital Sanaa.

India-US partnership in a new ‘strategic plus’ phase: Richard Verma

Asserting that India-US strategic partnership has moved into a new “strategic plus” phase, US Ambassador to India, Richard Verma, says the two countries are focused on finding creative, realistic ways to move forward.

“I believe we are witnessing a transformative time in US-India relations,” he told a Washington think tank on Friday outlining how President Barack Obama’s recent visit to India had propelled US-India relations to a new level of strategic convergence.

Indian-American mother seeks return of her abducted children

Recounting her heartrending tale of woe, an Indian-American mother turned to US lawmakers for help to get back her two children allegedly abducted to India by her ex-husband six years ago.

“Help me to make my voice heard in a way that shall be meaningful and allow me to be reunited with my children who need the love and nurturing of their mother,” said Bindu Philips testifying before a House panel with a few other parents of abducted children.

Dubai-based Indian and Ex-Sheriff of Mumbai Awarded Honorary Doctorates by DY Patil University

Dubai-based business tycoon Ram Buxani and former Sheriff of Mumbai Bakul Patel were conferred with the honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters (D Litt) by a university in Mumbai.

The degrees were presented to them by Maharashtra Governor C Vidyasagar Rao at a function here last evening at DY Patil University in Navi Mumbai.

Dr Buxani is the Chairman of ITL Cosmos Group in Dubai, which is a 60-year-old conglomerate. He is also among the pioneer promoters of IndusInd Bank Ltd in India and was its Director until recently, a release said.

Former US cop indicted for assaulting Indian Sureshbhai Patel

A US police officer, accused of using excessive force against a 57-year-old Indian leaving him partially paralysed, has been indicted on federal civil rights violation charges that carries imprisonment up to 10 years.

“A federal grand jury indicted Eric Parker, the police officer who threw Sureshbhai Patel to the ground resulting in him getting partially paralyzed, for deprivation of rights under color of law,” said Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta and US Attorney in the Northern District of Alabama Joyce Vance in a two-page indictment.

President Barack Obama has nominated an Indian-American, a former official at its Embassy in New Delhi, as the next US ambassador to Sri Lanka and Maldives.

Obama yesterday announced the nomination of Atul Keshap, a career foreign service official, as the next US ambassador to Sri Lanka and Maldives along with Alaina Teplitz as the next ambassador to Nepal.

Indian restaurant owner charged with manslaughter in UK

In the first such case, the owner of a string of award-winning Indian restaurants in the UK has been charged with the manslaughter of a 38-year-old customer who died following a severe allergic reaction after eating a curry that contained peanuts.

Paul Wilson was killed by anaphylactic shock after eating the curry from a takeaway which is believed to have contained the nuts, The Telegraph reported.

Queen’s University cancer researcher Madhuri Koti has discovered a biomarker that will help lead to better predictions of the success of chemotherapy in ovarian cancer patients.

Biomarkers are an indicator of a biological state or condition, and the discovery could lead to better treatment options in the fight against ovarian cancer, according to a press release from the university.

Indian-American doctor gets 9-months jail for bribery in US

An Indian-American doctor has been sentenced to nine-months in jail for taking kickbacks for diagnostic testing referrals of his patients and failing to file tax returns on USD 1 million of income over a three-year period.

Yash Khanna, 72, of Livingston in New Jersey, had last year admitted to earning income of more than USD 381,000 in 2008, USD 400,000 in 2009 and USD 214,000 in 2010.

The Justice Department had said that he intentionally failed to file tax returns or ask for extensions during those years.

Indian-American sibling get USD 9mn settlement in assault case

An Indian-American brother-sister duo has been awarded record USD 9 million in damages for severe injuries sustained when they were attacked by metal bats during a brawl with two men in a night club here in 2005.

Anuj Sapra and Arti Sapra won the judgement in Manhattan Supreme Court for the incident at the city club when the two men misbehaved with them and later beat them up with baseball bats.

Five Indians from a family killed in Nepal accident

Five Indian nationals from a family, including two children, were killed and two minors were injured when their car plunged 200 metres down a gorge in Nepal on Sunday, police said.

The jeep in which the family from Jharkhand were travelling skidded off the road in an accident-prone area at Simkhola, Kulekhani on the Kathmandu-Hetauda route in Makwanpur district, according to Superintendent of Police Sisu Sharma.

Five Indian students injured in Saudi car accident

Five Indian students in Saudi Arabia, returning home after appearing in their examinations, have been critically injured in a car crash, according to media reports.

The accident happened on Friday when the driver of the car in which the students were travelling in lost control and hit a tree on the roadside.

The condition of some of the students, who sustained head injuries, is critical, according to a Saudi Gazette report on Friday.

Five 12 grade students of Indian origin critically injured in Jeddah

Indians among illegal migrants smuggled out of UK

An undercover investigation has found Indian and Pakistani nationals among a group of illegal immigrants being smuggled out of the UK, to avoid deportation only to re-enter the country through other parts of Europe.

The expose found the migrants trying to avoid deportation to their home country by being smuggled to Italy, where they
can make an asylum claim and then re-enter the UK.

A European Union (EU) asylum loophole means that, if then caught in the UK, they are likely to be returned to Italy
rather than their country of origin.

Top Indian-American NSA lawyer returns to private practice

Indian-American Rajesh “Raj” De has left his post as the top lawyer at the National Security Agency (NSA) to return to private practice as partner at the Washington law firm of Mayer Brown.

De, who left the spy agency Friday will rejoin the firm as a partner and head of a 35-lawyer practice in June, the Hill, a news site focusing on the US Congress reported.

He first made partner at Mayer Brown in 2007, before leaving for a string of government posts.

Indian Expat Dies in UAE Road Accident

An Indian expatriate has died in a road accident in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirate (UAE), The National reported on Thursday.

The victim, in his 40s, died on the spot after driving into the back of a lorry while travelling on Sharjah’s Al Dhaid Road at around 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

Police said that the accident occurred as the victim was driving too close to the vehicle in front. His body was taken to Al Dhaid Hospital, after being recovered from the wreckage.
