US lawmakers praise role of Indian-American physicians

The Association of American Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) welcomed the passage by the US House of a bill that would reformulate how physicians are reimbursed for Medicare, a government health insurance for seniors over 65.

If approved by the Senate, the legislation would repeal the sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula currently in use. The SGR formula places a cap on spending for physicians services.

Railways gives free tickets to Yemen evacuees for travel home

With various departments doing their bit for those evacuated from strife-torn Yemen, the Railways played its own role by providing free tickets to 75 of them for travel from Mumbai, where they landed, to their destinations across the country.

The 75 evacuees were received by railway officials at the Mumbai International Airport in the wee hours of Thursday and taken by bus to the Lokmanya Tilak and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus stations, a Railway Ministry official said.

46 Indian nationals reach Chennai from Yemen

A group of 46 persons, including seven women and two children belonging to Tamil Nadu, reached here today in two private flights after they were evacuated from strife-torn Yemen, airport sources said.

The group members, most of them belonging to Madurai and Ramanathapuram districts, were part of the 334 people who landed in Mumbai in two Indian Air Force planes last night after their evacuation.

Tamil Nadu Government officials were at the airport to welcome them.

The state government had arranged for their travel to their respective destinations, the sources said.

Indian couple found dead in Sri Lanka

An Indian couple was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a hotel here on Friday, prompting Sri Lankan police to launch an investigation.

The police found the bodies of a 30-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman in the hotel room in Wellawatta in the Colombo metropolitan area where they stayed after their arrival in the country on March 27.

The bodies were found after the hotel owner informed the police when the victims did not come out from the room since last night, Colombo Page reported.

Rescued Indian national in New Zealand dead

An Indian national rescued from drowning in New Zealand died on Friday.

Police said Boobesh Palani, 26, who was studying in New Zealand, was rescued from the waters off Wellington Harbour on Monday by two teenaged girls and two young men.

Palani died in Wellington Hospital on Friday, the New Zealand Herald reported.

Palani’s family thanked the public for their support over the last few days.

“This is a tragedy but thanks to the public’s help we were able to establish Palani’s identity which meant his friends were at his side for his final few days,” police said.

Indian techie dies in Sydney after fall

An Indian IT analyst has died after falling off the balcony of a third-floor apartment in Sydney, the media reported on Friday.

Pankaj Saw, 29, who worked for Tech Mahindra, was talking to his wife in India on the phone when he plunged about 10 metres to the ground at the block of apartments in Macquarie Park on Thursday, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

The New South Wales police said detectives believed the Indian national’s death was a result of “misadventure” and initial investigation suggested there may have been “some fault with the balcony”.

Indian couple found dead in Srinka, probe launched

The Sri Lankan police on Friday said a probe has been launched into the death of an Indian couple whose bodies were discovered in a hotel here on Thursday.

The couple were residing in the hotel since March 27, Xinhua news agency reported. They were between 30-35 years of age.

“We believe it is a double suicide but investigations have been launched to probe the deaths,” a police official said.

The bodies were discovered after the hotel owner informed the police that the couple had not come out of their room since Wednesday.

Two Indian-origin entrepreneurs have been charged by a top US regulator with insider trading in connection with the 2013 proposed acquisition of American company Cooper Tire and Rubber by India’s Apollo Tyres.

Amit Kanodia of Massachusetts, a 47-year-old entrepreneur and private equity investor, and Iftikar Ahmed, of Connecticut, a general partner at a venture capital firm have been charged with fraud by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in a complaint filed in US district court in Connecticut.

190 Indians evacuated from Yemen reach Mumbai

An Indian Air Force flight with 190 Indians evacuated from strife-torn Yemen landed here on Thursday, while another 169 went to Kochi in Kerala, an official said.

In a highly coordinated operation, around 350 people stranded in the port city of Aden, Yemen were evacuated by Indian Navy Ship INS Sumitra in the past two days.

An IAF C17 (Globemaster) with 190 people took off from Djibouti on Wednesday night and landed at Mumbai airport at 3.30 a.m. on Thursday.

The evacuated people were handed over to the Air India ground staff for baggage and immigration formalities.

Three naval ships to evacuate Indians from Yemen

The Indian Navy on Wednesday said it has deployed three ships to help in the evacuation of Indian nationals from strife-torn Yemen.

A navy release said INS Sumitra, an offshore patrol vessel, which was deployed for anti-piracy patrol in the Gulf of Aden, has evacuated some 350 Indian nationals from Yemen to Djibouti.

Djibouti, a country neighbouring Yemen, is located on the Horn of Africa in the Gulf of Aden.

A Sikh man was beaten up in a suspected racial attack in the British city of Birmingham and police have launched an investigation after the sickening video of the assault emerged on the internet.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Wednesday said that a total number of 350 Indian nationals, who have been evacuated from strife-torn Yemen’s Aden city to Djibouti, will be home tonight.

“Braving the weather with high spirits. Indian nationals evacuated from Aden now in Djibouti. Will be home tonight,” MEA official spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin tweeted.

Minister of State for External Affairs General (Retd.) V.K. Singh, who was in Djibouti to oversee the evacuation process, assured the evacuated people that they were safe now.

Missing Indian-origin boy found, admitted to hospital in UK

A 10-year-old Indian-origin boy suffering from a rare genetic illness, who ran away from his home in the wee hours today, was found by an off-duty Scotland officer soon after the force launched a search to trace him.

A police spokesperson said: “Malakhi Chijiutomi-Ghosh has been found this afternoon by an off duty police officer in Hertfordshire. He has been taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.”

A Hindu couple in South Africa who were refused a franchise from a national pizza company because they were not Muslim has won substantial damages after taking the company to court.

Anak and Kaskumarie Neerputh brought the action against franchisor Romans Pizza in the Tshwane Equality Court, where Magistrate R Francis yesterday ordered the company to pay them 200,000 rands and publish an apology in newspapers around the area where the couple lived for “offending their dignity”.

Female foeticide: Indian American woman jailed for 20 years

An Indian American woman has been sentenced to 20 years in prison following her conviction last month for of female foeticide.

A judge in South Bend, Indiana, announced the sentence on Monday, Public Radio International (PRI) online reported.

Purvi Patel, 33, comes from a family of Indian immigrants who settled in Granger, Indiana, a suburb of South Bend.

Scarcity of food, water in Yemen: Indian returnee

There is a shortage of food and water in Yemen and continuous bombing and shelling is taking place in the country, an Indian expatriate has said on returning to Kerala.

Rueban Jacob Chandy, who arrived here in the morning, said the atmosphere is not conducive to live in Yemen with food and water becoming increasingly scarse.
