Zardari to review laws that militate against minority

Islamabad, August 11: President Asif Ali Zardari today said his government will review all laws that “militate against” Pakistan’s minority communities, weeks after gunmen shot dead two Christians accused of blasphemy outside a court in Punjab Province.

Besides creating a five per cent quota for minorities in government jobs and reserving four for them in the Senate or upper house of parliament, the government has “decided to review all laws that militate against minorities and the vulnerable sections of society,” Zardari said in a message on the occasion of Pakistan’s Minorities Day.

Andhra Pradesh CM Rosaiah indisposed

Hyderabad, August 11: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah is slightly indisposed as he is suffering from fever.

Doctors have advised him to take complete rest for two days, a release from the Chief Minister’s Office said tonight.

In view of his indisposition, all official engagements of the Chief Minister for today and tomorrow stands cancelled, it added.

Naidu derailed process for formation of Telangana: KCR

Hyderabad, August 11: The war of words between TDP and TRS intensified today with TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao alleging that it was TDP Chief N Chandrababu Naidu who derailed the process of formation of Telangana state after the Centre had announced a positive decision over the issue.

“We will definitely find fault with Chandrababu Naidu because it was he who blocked the formation of separate Telangana after the Centre announced its decision on December 9,” Rao told reporters here tonight.

UP BJP’s chief entry into Ayodhya banned

Faizabad (UP), August 11: Apprehending breach of peace, the district administration today banned the entry of Uttar Pradesh BJP chief Surya Pratap Shahi into Ayodhya.

The entry of Shahi and other BJP activists had been banned till the end of the Sawan Jhula Mela commencing here tomorrow, Ayodhya Resident Magistrate Nagendra Sharma said.

Shahi along with thousands of VHP, Bajrang Dal and party activists was likely to visit Ayodhya to take a vow to build a Ram temple at the disputed site during the Mela.

Has Law Ministry queried to SC on blogging by judges?

New Delhi, Augsut 11: Television channels have reported that the Union Law Ministry has written to the Supreme Court enquring whether judges can blog on social networking sites.

A spokesman of the Supreme Court denied receipt of such a letter. Law Ministry officials on condition of anonymity also denied writing any such letter to the Supreme Court.

Justice D V Shylendra Kumar of the Karntaka High Court has been frequently blogging on his own blog ‘justdvskumar’ since August last year and posted details of the assets owned by him and his wife Veena Kumar.

Modi camp slams BCCI order, threatens legal action

Mumbai, August 11: Slamming the BCCI for rejecting Lalit Modi’s demand for recusal of Chirayu Amin and Arun Jaitley from the disciplinary hearing against him, the suspended IPL Commissioner’s lawyer Mehmood Abdi today threatened to take legal action against the Board.

“We don’t consider it as a fair order. We will take appropriate legal steps after consultations with senior counsels,” said Abdi, reacting to the BCCI decision.

Asked whether it meant going to a court of law, Abdi said “that is not ruled out.”

Mamata has breathing problem: Doctor

Kolkata, August 11: Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee, who suffered a chest injury while returning from her rally at Lalgarh on Monday night, has a breathing problem, a doctor attending on her said tonight.

“The condition of Mamata Banerjee is stable. But as she received an injury in the chest, she has a breathing problem,” cardiologist Subrata Moitra who examined the Trinamool Congress chief at her Kalighat residence, told PTI.

“She still has pain in the neck, ribs, chest-wall and waist and is feverish,” he said.

Arjun breaks silence, points finger at Rao on Anderson

New Delhi, August 11: Breaking his silence, Arjun Singh Wednesday appeared to point fingers at the late P V Narasimha Rao in the exit of former Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson in the wake of Bhopal gas disaster in 1984, thereby giving a clean chit to the then Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

“The Chief Secretary informed me that there have been persistent calls for granting bail to Mr Anderson from Home Ministry officials in Delhi,” said Singh, who was then the Madhya Pradesh state Chief Minister, pointing fingers at Rao, who was then the Indian Home Minister.

Moon sight for holy Ramadan

Hyderabad, August 11: Holy month of Ramadan for the Muslim began here and in other parts of Andhra Pradesh with the sighting of the moon on Wednesday.

The moon sighting committee comprising religious scholars announced that the Ramzan moon was sighted in some towns. Sirens blared from mosques across Hyderabad as Muslims began preparations for the fasting month.

People were seen greeting each other on the beginning of the holy month. Taraveeh or special Ramzan prayers began at the mosques.

Saudi says Ramadan starts Wednesday

Riyadh, August 11: The Muslim fasting month of Ramadan will start on Wednesday in Saudi Arabia, home to Islam’s holiest shrines, state television Al-Ekhbariyah said.

The news channel said on Tuesday night that the supreme judicial council, which is in charge of confirming the sighting of the new moon, has announced the beginning of the lunar month.

The exact dates of the start and the end of Ramadan depend on the sighting of the new moon as many Muslim countries reject using astronomical calculation for the Muslim lunar calendar.

Obama team under fire for imam’s trip to Mideast

Washington, August 11: The Obama administration drew fire Tuesday from conservative lawmakers for sending to the Middle East the imam who backs controversial plans for a mosque next to the site of the September 11 attacks in New York.

“Imam Feisal (Abdul Rauf) will be traveling to Qatar, Bahrain, and the UAE (United Arab Emirates) on a US government-sponsored trip to the Middle East,” State Department spokesman Philip Crowley told reporters.

“He will discuss Muslim life in America and religious tolerance,” Crowley added.

Eight Iraqi soldiers killed in house bomb

Iraq, August 11: Insurgents early Wednesday lured Iraqi troops into a booby-trapped house in Diyala province which then exploded killing eight soldiers, an army officer told AFP.

Three other bodies were found under the rubble, but it was not immediately clear if they were of insurgents or civilians, Captain Mohanned Ibrahim said.

The blast, which wounded four other soldiers, occurred at around 5:00 am (0200 GMT) in the town of Saadiyah, 100 kilometres (65 miles) northeast of Baghdad, he said.

Palestinians cite progress in US talks

Washington, August 11: Palestinian officials on Tuesday said they had made progress towards the launch of direct talks with Israel during the latest visit by US envoy George Mitchell.

However, they adhered to the same demands that have held up talks for months, namely a complete freeze of Israeli settlement activity and set guidelines regarding the negotiation of final borders.

The Palestinians also want a set timeline for an agreement addressing all the core issues of the conflict that does not exceed 24 months.

South Sudan ambush kills 23 in key oil region

Sudan, August 11: Gunmen in south Sudan killed 23 people, including police officers, in an ambush on a truck in the key oil producing state of Unity last weekend, a southern army spokesman said on Wednesday.

“Attackers ambushed a truck south of Bentiu,” said Malaak Ayuen Ajok, from the Sudan Peoples’ Liberation Army (SPLA), the former rebel turned official southern military.

“Our forces on the ground say that 23 people were killed, including police officers, as well as those from the prison service and wildlife protection forces,” said Ajok, of the attack on Sunday evening.

Iraq spending $300 million on hotels for summit

Baghdad, August 11: Iraq will spend 300 million dollars to upgrade six major hotels in Baghdad for an Arab summit next year, Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari told AFP on Tuesday.

“We will invest around 300 million dollars to transform our six largest hotels to international standards for the Arab summit at the end of March” 2011, Zebari said.

The hotels include the Rasheed, the centre of political life during the era of Saddam Hussein, who was ousted by the 2003 US-led invasion and later tried and executed.

Lebanon aide criticises US over military aid

Beirut, August 11: A Lebanese official criticised on Tuesday a decision by a top US lawmaker to put on hold 100 million dollars in military aid to Lebanon, saying support for the army was central to upholding Lebanon’s sovereignty.

“It is in the interest of those who claim to defend Lebanon’s sovereignty that Lebanon have a strong army,” Nazem Khoury, an advisor to President Michel Sleiman, told AFP.

“The United States says it supports that sovereignty, but these statements should also be translated into acts,” he added.

US senators seek Lockerbie bomber medical records

Washington, August 11: Four US senators pressed Scottish First Minsiter Alex Salmond on Tuesday to release the Lockerbie bomber’s full medical records as well as a list of doctors who examined him before his release.

“We are writing today to ask for the release of all medical documentation for Abdelbaset Ali Mohmet al-Megrahi while under Scottish care and after,” the lawmakers said in a letter to Salmond that they released to reporters.

Israel bulldozes Muslim graves in Jerusalem

Jerusalem, August 11: Israeli bulldozers backed by police destroyed dozens of gravestones in a Muslim cemetery in central Jerusalem on Tuesday, according to an AFP photographer.

The Islamic Movement accused the municipality of destroying more than 200 Muslim graves that had been recently renovated in a centuries-old cemetery in mostly Jewish west Jerusalem.

“Last night at around 12:30 am (2130 GMT) occupation forces entered the cemetery and destroyed around 200 graves,” said Mahmud Abu Atta of the Al-Aqsa Foundation linked to the group, whose members are Arab citizens of Israel.

Army chief: Iraq needs US military support until 2020

Baghdad, August 11: The Iraqi army will require American support for another decade before it is ready to handle the country’s security on its own, Iraq’s army chief of staff told AFP on Wednesday.

Lieutenant General Babaker Zebari said Iraq’s politicians had to find a way to “fill the void” after American troops withdraw from the country at the end of next year under a bilateral security pact.

“At this point, the withdrawal (of US forces) is going well, because they are still here,” Zebari said.

Devout Muslims renew faith with Ramadan fast

Cairo, August 11: Sunni Muslims across much of the world on Wednesday began the fasting month of Ramadan during an especially gruelling time of the year for many, with the Shiite community expected to follow suit on Thursday.

Authorities urged Muslims to be merciful during Ramadan, while non-Muslims in Muslim-majority countries were asked to observe the rules and refrain from drinking or eating in public or face fines and imprisonment.

Toyota suspends auto exports to Iran over nuclear row

Tokyo, August 11: Toyota has suspended auto exports to Iran indefinitely in line with global sanctions against Tehran’s nuclear programme, the company said Wednesday.

The world’s largest carmaker said in a statement it has halted auto shipments to Iran since early June, “considering the international environment”.

“Our company will continue to closely monitor the international situation,” it said without elaborating.

UN court on Hariri murder demands data held by Hezbollah

Beirut, August 11: A UN court probing the murder of Lebanese ex-premier Rafiq Hariri on Wednesday called for the submission of all material held by Hezbollah, which claims its data implicates Israel in the killing.

“In line with its mandate, the Office of the Prosecutor has requested the Lebanese authorities to provide all the information in possession of (Hezbollah) Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah,” a statement released by the UN-backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon said.

BJP shy away from Shah’s name in protest against CBI

New Delhi, August 11: It was a BJP protest against the “misuse” of CBI but senior party leaders today shied away from taking the name of Gujarat Minister Amit Shah arrested by the agency recently in connection with the Sohrabuddin encounter killing case.

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley, BJP General Secretary Vijay Goel and Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly V K Malhotra addressed the protest outside CBI headquarters but none of them mentioned Shah.

They alleged the Congress was using the agency to destabilise the Gujarat government.
