Centre patronising anti-Gujarat NGOs: Modi

Rajkot, August 15: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi Sunday charged the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the centre with patronizing NGOs that were working against the interests of Gujarat and harassing its police.

In his Independence Day address here, Modi said: “Such NGOs are being funded from the government treasury with the sole aim of thwarting the development march of the Gujarat in the name of the common man. Under the guise of ‘manav adhikar'(human rights) Delhi seems to be more worried about the ‘danav adhikar’ (devil’s rights).”

Dambulla (Sri Lanka), August 15: Sri Lanka Cricket’s national curator Anuruddha Polonowita has ridiculed Indian complaints against the practice pitches here, saying he does not know what sort of tracks to prepare for a side which was bowled out for 88 on a batting-friendly strip.

Govt making every effort to control high inflation: PM

New Delhi, August 15: Under attack for rising prices, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said the government was making every possible effort to control “high inflation” and insulate poor from its adverse impact.

“I know that in the last few months high inflation has caused you difficulties. It is the poor who are the worst affected by rising prices, especially when the prices of commodities of every day use like foodgrains, pulses, vegetables increase.

Refrain from violence during Ramzan month: Omar

Srinagar, August 15: Asking separatists to refrain from violence during the holy month of Ramzan, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today asked them to take advantage of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s statement that he was ready to consider autonomy if there was a consensus.

At the same time, Omar said the “trust deficit” between the Centre and people of the state can be bridged by “restoring autonomy”.

No new mining licences issued by BJP govt: Yeddyurappa

Bangalore, August 15: Facing heat from Congress over the illegal mining issue, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa today asserted that no new mining licences had been granted by the BJP government after coming to power.

“After coming to power, we neither gave new mining licences nor renewed them without value addition. Mining is going on with licences issued by previous governments. As per the new mining policy, there is provision only for value addition and no provision to export the ore,” he said after unfurling the tricolour on the 64th Independence Day.

Provide details of funds for rallies: Karna Cong to BJP

Bangalore, August 15: Opposition Congress leader in the Karnataka Assembly, Siddaramaiah today demanded that the BJP government should provide details of the source of funding for its rallies being held across the state.

“BJP is spending hundreds of crores of Rupees on its rallies. A lot is spent on advertisements alone. Who gave them the money? They should place this account before the people,” he said at a press conference here.

UAE seeks clarification from Germany on release of Israeli spy

Dubai, August 15: The United Arab Emirates has said that it is seeking clarification from Germany on its decision to release an Israeli suspect wanted in the murder of senior Hamas leader Mahmoud Al Mabhouh here early this year.

The UAE’s Foreign Ministry said the country has been closely following the judicial proceedings in Germany against Uri Brodsky, arrested in connection with the fraudulent use of a German passport.

The country expressed concern over Germany releasing Uri Brodsky on bail and granting him the freedom to return to Israel while the case against him continues.

13 Taliban militants killed in US drone strike in Pak

Islamabad, August 15: At least 13 Taliban militants, including a key commander, were killed and six others injured when a US drone struck a compound in Pakistan’s volatile North Waziristan tribal region, officials said today.

The drone fired two missiles at the ‘hujra’ or guesthouse of a tribesman’s compound in Eisori village near Mirali, a town in North Waziristan tribal agency, late last night, they said.

Taliban commander Amir Moaviya was among the 13 militants killed in the attack.

This was the first US drone attack in the month of August.

Raman Singh unfurls the tricolour

Chhattisgarh, August 15: Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh unfurled the tricolour at the Police Parade Ground in Raipur.

Raman Singh said that the government is working on multiple efforts to contain Maoist violence in his Independence Day speech on Sunday.

“Chhattisgarh, along with a few other states, is passing through a major disaster caused by Maoist terrorism and the state government is working on multiple efforts to contain violence and restore peace,” Raman Singh said.

PM to visit Leh on Tuesday

New Delhi, August 15: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will visit Leh in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, which has been hit by flash floods caused by a cloudburst that claimed about 200 lives and left over 400 injured.

Singh will visit some of the hospitals where the injured in last Friday’s cloudburst are undergoing treatment, a PMO spokesman said.

He will review the relief and rehabilitation measures with senior officials.

Shoe thrown at Omar at I-Day function

Srinagar, August 15: A man hurled a brown leather shoe at Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during the Independence Day function at a heavily-guarded stadium in Srinagar on Sunday.

Abdullah was just about to take the salute after unfurling the tricolour when someone from behind flung a shoe at him, which missed hitting the chief minister.

Unconfirmed reports say that the shoe thrower is a police officer. He was rounded up by Abdullah’s security men and taken out of the Bakhshi Stadium, the venue for the Independence Day celebrations.

6.6 magnitude quake hits Mariana Islands

Washington, August 15: An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 hit the Mariana Islands region on Sunday, continuing a series of strong aftershocks 24 hours after a 7.2 tremor, US geologists said.

There have been 10 quakes of magnitude 5.0 or stronger since the powerful quake on Saturday morning but all were in a remote area of the Pacific Ocean and well away from populated areas.

The latest quake struck at 9:01am (2301 GMT on Saturday) at a depth of 22.5 kilometres (14 miles) and centred 570 kilometres from the Northern Marianas capital Saipan, the US Geological Survey said.

PM hoists flag at Red Fort

New Delhi, August 15: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh hoisted the national flag at the Red Fort on the Independence Day.

In his speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort on Sunday, the Prime Minister made a fresh bid to bring the Maoists to the negotiating table and appealed to them to abjure violence and come forward for talks.

Singh also made it clear that India wants to resolve differences with Pakistan through dialogue but much progress cannot be made unless terrorism emanating from its territory ends.

Police open fire on protesting farmers in UP, 7 injured

Aligarh, August 15: At least 7 persons were injured on Sunday when police opened fire on violent farmers protesting alleged detention of one of their leaders spearheading the agitating for higher compensation for land acquired for a township at a village 45km from here.

The violence broke out when the farmers went on the rampage ransacking a police outpost and setting afire a bus after a rumour spread that one of the farmer leaders was arrested by authorities at Jikarpur village near Uttar Pradesh-Haryana border.

Younus to get fresh showcause notice

Islamabad, August 15: The Pakistan Cricket Board is planning to issue a fresh showcause notice to Younis Khan for alleged indiscipline but the senior batsman’s legal team has asserted that such a move would be “criminal”.

Lawyer Ahmed Qayyum, who has represented Younis in his appeal against the indefinite ban imposed on him by the PCB in March, said if the board issued a fresh notice to his client, it would be a crime.

“Issuing a fresh show cause notice to Younis would be a violation of article 13 of the constitution as no one can be punished for the same offence twice,” Qayyum said.

New Delhi, August 15: Peace talks with Pakistan can be taken forward only if it does not support terrorism directed against India, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Sunday.

In his Independence Day speech, the prime minister said India expected Pakistan not to let its territory be used for acts of terrorism against India.

“We have been emphasizing this in all our discussions with the Pakistan government. If this is not done, we cannot progress far in our dialogue with Pakistan,” he said.
