Satyam scam: CBI completes arguments on framing of charges

Hyderabad, September 13: The CBI, probing the multi-crore accounting scam in Satyam Computers today completed its arguments on the charges to be framed against 10 accused in the case.

CBI’s Special Public Prosecutor K Surendra, who had last week began arguments before the XXI Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate ( ACCM), sought to frame charges against each accused and presented before the court documents and evidence in support of the charges.

Maoists torch RTC bus in protest against Azad encounter

Visakhapatnam, September 13: Maoists set ablaze an RTC bus on Saturday night in Visakhpatanam Agency in protest against the encounter of Cherukuri Rajkumar alias Azad in Adilabad forests.

About 10 armed Naxals torched the Visakhapatam-Jolaput night halt bus near Kunjibangi junction in Munchingput mandal at 9.30 pm. At the time of the incident, 13 passengers were travelling. Sources said three persons got on to the bus at Pedabayalu and bought tickets for Kunjibangi.

CBI moves SC for cancellation of Ramalinga Raju”s bail

New Delhi, September 13: CBI today moved the Supreme Court seeking cancellation of the bail granted bail to B Ramalinga Raju, tainted founder of Satyam Computers, by the Andhra Pradesh High Court in Rs 14,000 crore scam. The probe agency has challenged the High Court decision contending that Raju, who was the Chairman of the company, may influence the witnesses majority of whom are his former employees.

16 killed in Afghan blast, air attack

Kabul, September 13: A civilian and a police officer were killed in a bombing and a NATO airstrike killed 14 suspected Taliban militants in southern Afghanistan, officials said Monday.

A motorbike bomb exploded Sunday in the centre of Sangin, a district in Helmand province, as a police convoy was passing, said Daoud Ahmadi, spokesman for the provincial governor.

Two police officers were injured in the blast, he said.

NATO said airstrikes were conducted Sunday in Uruzgan province after insurgents attacked Afghan and foreign military forces.

BJP activists protest against Salman Khan

Lucknow, September 13: Several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists in this Uttar Pradesh capital Sunday protested against actor Salman Khan for his remarks on the 26/11 terror attack, police said. Salman has apologised for his comments.

Shouting slogans against Salman, BJP activists burnt posters of the actor near a mall-cum-multiplex in Lucknow’s Gomti Nagar area.

Police used mild force against the protesters as they tried to disrupt a show of film ‘Dabangg’ that has Salman in the lead.

Police opens fire on rampaging mob in Hisar, one killed

Hisar, September 13: One person was killed and several others injured as police opened fire on protesters demanding quota for Jat community under OBC category who later went on a rampage, damaging vehicles and rail track and vandalising public property at Mayyar village today. The activists belonging to ”Jat Aarakshan Sangarsh Samiti” had blocked the road traffic on Hisar-Delhi highway, 15 kms from here.

Congress, BJP trying to finish regional parties: Lalu

Patna, September 13: RJD leader Lalu Prasad today charged BJP with having a secret understanding with Congress to “swallow” regional and smaller parties in the upcoming Bihar Assembly polls. Prasad”s attack came a day after BJP alleged that RJD and Congress have arrived at a secret alliance for the polls.

“Congress and BJP have a secret understanding and they want to have a bipolar political system in India,” Prasad told reporters here. Prasad claimed that Congress had ensured “clean chit” from CBI to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the Shoharabuddin encounter case.

Australian lawyer smokes Quran, Bible pages

Sydney, September 13: An Australian lawyer tore pages from the Quran and the Bible and smoked them on YouTube, days after a US pastor’s threat to burn Islam’s holy book triggered deadly protests and global condemnation.

In a 12-minute clip entitled “Bible or Quran which burns best?” Alex Stewart, who belongs to an atheist group, holds up the Christian and Muslim holy books before tearing out pages and smoking them.

At one point, he lights what looks like a joint rolled from a page from the Bible, leans back after inhaling heavily and says “Holy”.

Punjab church torched over Quran rumours‎

Chandigarh, September 13: Indefinite curfew has been clamped at Malerkotla in Punjab’s Barnala district following violence in which a wooden plank kept in a Church and a police motor cycle were set on fire by miscreants.

The violence in parts of Malerkotla town late last night was triggered by rumours spread by some unidentified miscreants that a Holy Book has been desecrated in the US, Barnala Senior SSP Harcharan Singh Bhullar told a news agency on phone today.

Israeli shelling kills three Palestinians in Gaza

Gaza, September 13: Israeli shelling killed three Palestinians in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, medical workers and witnesses said, after militants in the Hamas-ruled territory fired rockets across the border.

Hamas security and medical officials said the three Palestinian dead were farmers from the town of Beit Hanoun near the Israel- Gaza border. Three other Palestinians were wounded, they said.

Osama bin Laden’s grandchildren dead: Report

London, September 13: A surrogate mother carrying two grandchildren of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden has lost the twins, after she was attacked on her way home from a cafe in Syria, a media report said.

According to ‘The Sun’, bin Laden’s 29-year-old son Omar hired 24-year-old Louise Pollard from Bristol to have the kids for him and his estranged British wife Zaina.

San Diego, September 13: A vast majority of firearms seized from criminal organisations in Mexico come from the US, a study has claimed.

The study by the University of San Diego’s Trans-Border Institute said one of the most significant trends has been the increased cross-border trafficking of military-style rifles and ammunition.

UPCC authorises Sonia to nominate state unit chief

Lucknow, September 13: The Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) today unanimously authorised party chief Sonia Gandhi to nominate the state unit president, committee and AICC delegates. “Newly elected UPCC delegates today unanimously authorised national president Sonia Gandhi to nominate the president, new committee and AICC delegates from the state,” AICC general secretary and UP incharge Digvijay Singh told reporters here.

The decision was taken during a meeting of newly elected PCC delegates held at UPCC headquarters. Rita Bahuguna Joshi is at present the state unit chief.

Chiranjeevi arrested for protesting outside APIIC

Hyderabad, September 13: Praja Rajayam Party (PRP) chief K Chirajeevi and many other senior party leaders were arrested here on Monday when they staged a dharna outside the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC), demanding a CBI probe into its controversial land deals in the last six years.

Addressing the dharna, Chiranjeevi alleged that thousands of acres of land was given away to industrial houses and real estate developers in total violation of rules.

Russia, Georgia in court over human rights claims

Moscow, September 13: Russia and Georgia appeared in court on Monday in a dispute over whether the United Nations’ highest court can hear charges by Georgia of Russian human rights abuses on its territory.

The hearing is the latest step in a case that dates to August 2008, when Georgia filed a complaint with the International Court of Justice, claiming violations by Russia of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination on Georgian territory.

Newborn Dumped In Gulf Air Jet Toilet Bin

Manila, September 13: Manila airport cleaners tidying up a Gulf Air jet aircraft that had landed were shocked to find a new-born baby boy in a toilet’s rubbish bin on Monday, reports The Mail.

A search has now begun for the mother, who investigators are convinced gave birth in the toilet as the Gulf Air jet flew to the Philippines from Saudi Arabia.

‘She appears to have left the aircraft as soon as possible after the plane landed,’ said a police officer.

The clean-up team which boarded the plane found the baby as a new flight crew were making plans to fly the plane back to Bahrain.

Telangana activists stone Naidu’s convoy

Hyderabad, September 13: Telangana activists Monday hurled stones at Telugu Desam Party (TDP) N. Chandrababu Naidu’s convoy in the region’s Ranga Reddy district, Andhra Pradesh police said.

Four people, including a police constable, were injured in the violence at Pargi, about 70 km from here.

Naidu escaped to safety as his driver sped the car away to evade stones. The leader of opposition was heading towards Mahbubnagar district to meet farmers who are facing problems due to alleged non-supply of fertilisers by authorities.

30,000 prisoners in Iraq without trial: Amnesty

Cairo, September 13: Iraqi authorities are holding some 30,000 people without trial and denying them access to lawyers, leaving them at risk of torture, the leading human rights organisation Amnesty International said Monday in a report.

Secret prisons are allegedly being used to house detainees. The report – entitled New Order, Same Abuses: Unlawful detentions and torture in Iraq – also charged that some prisoners had died from maltreatment while in custody.

Curfew in Punjab town after rumours of Quran burning in US

Chandigarh, September 13: Curfew was imposed in Punjab’s Malerkotla town Monday following communal tension in which the property of a church was set on fire by a mob enraged after rumours that the Quran has been burnt in the US.

Police officials in Malerkotla, about 150 km from here, said curfew would continue till tension subsides in the town.
