No more Condoms, sex issues in Jamia Milla

New Delhi, September 14: Not so long ago, the mere mention of the word “sex” would raise eyebrows and spark a debate in Jamia Millia Islamia, recall old-timers at the 90-year-old university. Today, however, students freely walk up to a university facility to collect condoms.

The transformation in outlook towards sex-related issues has occurred partly because the university has taken the lead in setting up a unique health centre, which not only creates awareness about sex-related health problems like HIV/AIDS but also educates students on personal hygiene.

Ten children die in Brazilian boat sinking

Brazil, September 14: Ten children died when a small fishing boat sank on the Sao Francisco River, and rescue workers late Monday were looking for an 11th child who was still missing, officials said.

Nine of the dead were aged 1 to 11, and the tenth child was 16 years old. All belonged to an extended family of 18 who were travelling in a boat designed for six people, police said.

The missing girl was 10 years old.

The family was on its way to visit relatives Sunday in Brazil’s Bahia province when the accident happened.

Govt will complete its term: Italy PM

Rome, September 14: Italy’s embattled prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, has ruled out a mid-term election in the country and insisted that his government will stay in office until the end of its term in 2013.

“I rule out fresh elections. The situation is under control, we are calm and we have the necessary conditions in parliament to govern until the end of the legislature in 2013,” Berlusconi told his private Canale 5 TV channel’s ‘Mattino 5′ current affairs programme.

Iran slams US over Quran desecration

Tehran, September 14: Iran Monday blamed the US for supporting the outrageous act of desecrating the Quran, and asked the Muslim community to take action against it.

According to ISNA news agency, Speaker of Iran’s parliament Ali Larijani said in a message: “I warn the US administration to either end support for such a barbarous action or wait for Muslims’ crushing response.”

Larijani’s message came as some protesters in the US tore some pages from a copy of the Quran
to denounce what they called the “charade of Islam” on the anniversary of 9/11 attacks Saturday.

I will be fully fit in two days: Rosaiah

Hyderabad, September 14: After being on “sick leave” for a fortnight, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah visited the state Secretariat and spent half-a-day in his office.

“My condition has improved. I will be fully fit in two days,” Rosaiah sai, as he prepared to leave for his residence after conducting two review meetings.

Rosaiah fell ill with “viral fever” on August 31 and was mostly confined to his house here.

He visited the Secretariat only three times in the last fortnight and spent an hour each time in his office.

TRS gives bandh call in Ranga Reddy district

Hyderabad, September 14: Alleging that students who protested against TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu’s visit to Telangana region on Monday were attacked by anti-social elements, TRS on Monday called for a shut down in Ranga Reddy district tomorrow over the issue.

“The students were attacked by anti-social elements from Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra regions at Parigi in Ranga Reddy district. We appeal to the people of the district to observe bandh tomorrow,” A Chandrasekhar, TRS in-charge for the district, said in a media release.

Jagan hits out at TDP over charges against YSR

Ongole, September 14: The war of words between TDP leaders and Congress MP Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy continued today with the latter wondering whether it was justified to make baseless allegations against Y S Rajasekhara Reddy who is no more to defend himself.

“Our beloved leader Rajasekhara Reddy has occupied a permanent place in hearts of the people because of the innovative welfare schemes he implemented. But those who do not like him and me are making baseless allegations against us. I ask, is it justified to make allegations against someone who is dead,” Jagan said.

Security beefed up, 150 arrested in Meerut ahead of Ayodhya verdict

Meerut, September 14:Cracking down on suspected mischief mongers ahead of the court verdict on Ayodhya title suit, 150 people have been arrested and 300 others forced to leave the district, police said today.

In order to thwart any attempt to disturb peace, the police and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) are regularly patrolling and monitoring sensitive areas in the district.

Meanwhile, state intelligence has informed police that there might be possible agitation in view of the verdict on September 24.

Venezuelan plane crashes with 47 aboard

Caracas, September 14: A plane carrying 47 people crashed shortly after takeoff today in eastern Venezuela, and it wasn’t immediately clear how many were hurt or killed.

The plane from the state airline Conviasa crashed about 6 miles (10km) from the eastern city of Puerto Ordaz at about 10am (1430 GMT), transportation minister Francisco Garces told state television. He said the plane went down on the property of the state-run Sidor steel foundry.

Apex court sends 1993 Mumbai blasts convict back to jail

New Delhi, September 13: The Supreme Court Monday directed the shifting of 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict Yusuf Abdul Razak Memon back to jail after doctors attending on him in Masina Hospital said that he could be discharged and treated in prison.

“He is a known case of chronic paranoid schizophrenia” and also “suffering from diabetes mellitus, hypertension and hyperlipidemia,” said the doctors’ report to the apex court bench of Justice P.Sathasivam and Justice B.S.Chauhan.

Deolali camp, Police Academy were on LeT’s hit list, says ATS

Mumbai, September 13: Army’s Deolali camp, Maharashtra Police Academy and Police Commissionerate in Nashik were on the hit-list of arrested LeT terror suspect Shaikh Lalbaba Mohammed Hussain, Maharashtra ATS said today.

Shaikh alias Bilal, arrested for allegedly preparing for terror strikes in Maharashtra, was staying in Nashik with two fake identities and conducted recce of these three locations since May on instructions of his aide Mirza Himayat Baig, an senior ATS official said.

11 killed across Kashmir report that the Quran were desecrated in the US.

Srinagar, September 13:At least 11 people were killed across the volatile Kashmir Valley Monday after violent protests that were initially triggered by a report that copies of the Quran were desecrated in the US.

While four people were killed in Tangmarg, where a Christian missionary school was torched, four died in Badgam, one in Pampore, one in Bandipora and a seven-year-old in Charar-e-Sharif. With Monday’s deaths, the total number of people killed since the present phase of violent unrest began on June 11 has risen to 81.

Imam vows to go ahead with Ground Zero mosque

New York, September 13:The imam behind the controversial planned Islamic cultural centre close to the site of the destroyed World Trade Center vowed Monday to press ahead with the project.

Speaking at a press conference in New York, Faisal Abdul Rauf said: “Is it worth all this firestorm? The answer is a categorical yes. Why? Because this centre will be a place for all faiths to come together … in mutual respect.”

India wants more foreign capital: PM

New Delhi, September 13: Pitching for increased foreign investment for a growth of 9 to 10 per cent, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said India will have to pay more attention to the Asia-Pacific region but asserted that the country’s “strategic autonomy” would not be compromised.

Addressing top commanders of defence services here, he observed that India’s “toughest challenges” lie in its neighbourhood and the country’s growth ambitions cannot be realised unless peace and stability is ensured in South Asia.

Nitish asks Congress to explain ‘pact’ with Lalu

Patna, September 13: Questioning the Congress about allowing RJD chief Lalu Prasad to occupy a front seat in the Lok Sabha, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said it indicated that the two were ‘hand in glove’.

Kumar, who was talking to mediapersons, asked Congress to explain how Prasad could occupy the front row seat without its support.

He also asked Congress to explain if there was any guarantee that it would not join hands with RJD after the elections.

Abdul Nasser Madani’s bail plea dismissed

Bangalore, September 13: Citing security interests of the state and the country, a local court today dismissed the bail plea of PDP leader Abdul Nasser Madani, an accused in the 2008 Bangalore serial blast case.

In its order, the fast track court said the material produced by prosecution so far revealed that there was a prima facie case against Madani.

Since investigation was under progress and allegations against Madani came under the purview of the Unlawful Activities Act, the bail cannot be granted, judge Shrikant Watawati in his over 30-page order.

Navy warship wards off attempt by pirates

New Delhi, September 13: A week after it guarded 13 merchant vessels from piracy attack, an Indian warship has once again warded off an attempt by sea brigands on nine cargo ships including an Indian vessel off Yemeni coast in Gulf of Aden.

This is the 17th successful operation of the Indian Navy to prevent a piracy attack on merchant vessels escorted by its warships since October 2008, when they were deployed in Gulf of Aden.

Security for judges tightened ahead of verdict

Lucknow, September 13: Security of the Allahabad High Court and the three judges who are to deliver the judgement in the sensitive Ayodhya title suit has been stepped up by the Uttar Pradesh government ahead of the verdict.

“Security at the Allahabad High Court, its Lucknow bench and the three judges has been enhanced keeping in view the September 24 judgement,” Additional Director General (Law and Order) Brijlal told reporters here.

RTI should not be casualty of corrupt babus: Moily

New Delhi, September 13: The Right To Information (RTI) should not become a casualty of corrupt bureaucrats and others and it is quite disturbing to hear about threats to RTI activists, Law Minister M Veerappa Moily said today.

Reacting to murder of RTI activists in parts of the country, he said “there are instances of attacks on RTI activists. Some of them are Amit Jethwa, an environmentalist in Gujarat, and Satish Shetty, an activist in Maharashtra.

HC seeks case diary in Nityananda case

Bangalore, September 13: The Karnataka High Court today directed the CID, probing criminal and rape charges against controversial self-styled godman Nityananda, to produce the case diary.

Justice Arali Nagaraj also directed police to file an affidavit on the details of investigations so far conducted.

The judge expressed displeasure over the absence of Investigation Officer K N Yogappa in the court and adjourned the case till September 21.
