Assam flood situation critical

Assam, September 14: The flood situation in Assam on Tuesday remained critical with Brahmaputra crossing the danger level at several places and inundating vast tracts of land in several districts following continuous heavy rainfall.

The Brahmaputra and its tributaries were flowing above the danger mark at Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Sonitpur, Morigaon, Dhubri districts and in Guwahati.More than 500 villages have been badly affected by the floods so far in 10 districts.

Maoists blow up railway track in Bihar

Bihar, September 14: Maoists blew up a railway track in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district and set ablaze the machine room of a mobile tower in Gaya district on Tuesday to enforce a two-day strike.

The rebels blew up the railway track near Sakra railway station in Muzaffarpur district. Sakra is situated on Samastipur-Muzaffarpur rail route of East Central Railway.

Additional Director General of Police (Headquarters) P.K. Thakur said an alert has been sounded across the state.

CWG traffic trials trouble commuters

New Delhi, September 14: The traffic trials on exclusive lanes for upcoming Commonwealth Games on Tuesday morning lead to traffic jams in the national capital creating hassles for office goers in reaching their destinations.

The rehearsals were conducted by the Delhi police on four stretches for two hours from 8 am, which threw traffic out of gear as police blocked one lane on these roads for Games traffic.

Naqvi denies his statement

Mumbai, September 14: BJP spokesman Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi denied his statement on campaigning of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in Bihar elections.

Earlier, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi claimed that there is no doubt in Modi’s involvement in the campaigns.

Hyderabad, September 14: Subsequent to the revelation of cheating on the part of the private institutions for obtaining scholarships, AP Minority Finance Corporation started inquiry reviewing the scholarships issued to the schools and number of students, and sent notices to 196 schools in which school administrations were warned of severe consequences for obtaining extra cheques and threatened legal action against them.

World champ Sushil Kumar returns home

New Delhi, September 14: India’s first world champion wrestler Sushil Kumar on Tuesday came back home to an arousing welcome.

Sushil became the first Indian to win the World Championship after he defeated Russian Alan Gogaev in the final of the 66 kg freestyle in Moscow on Sunday.

Flanked by his coach Satpal and Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) secretary general Kartar Singh, Sushil came out of the airport amid loud cheers from fans. Both Satpal and Kartar are also former Asian Games gold medallists.

Obama:No tax cut for richest Americans

Washington, September 14: As the US battles its worst recession in decades, President Barack Obama lashed out at Republicans on Monday, saying that an opposition push to extend the Bush-era tax cuts for people making over $250,000 is unaffordable.

Defending his economic policies ,President Barack Obama says his administration had made the largest investment in research and development in history so that the US can compete with China and India and Germany over the long term.

New WPI series comes into effect

New Delhi, September 14: Inflation for the month of August stood at 8.51 per cent, according to the new Wholesale Price Inflation (WPI) series released by the government on Tuesday . “The new index will help in informing both the government and people how the prices are moving. This will give a robust picture and reflect actual price movement,”
Commerce Minister Anand Sharma told .

Consumer items widely used by the middle class like ice-cream, mineral water, flowers, microwave oven, washing machine, gold and silver will be reflected in the new series of WPI inflation .

Trial of strength for Munda govt

Jharkhand, September 14: The Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda on Tuesday moved a trust vote in the Assembly.

Munda was sworn in as the Chief Minister of the state on September 11.

The trust vote was moved by Deputy Chief Minister Hemant Soren.

The assembly premises are undergoing renovation, thus the proceedings are being held in a makeshift assembly at the Administrative Training Institute in Ranchi.

US in huge $60 billion Saudi arms deal

Washington, September 14: The Obama administration will soon notify Congress of an arms sale to Saudi Arabia worth up to $60 billion, US officials said, a potentially record-breaking deal that may help counter Iran’s growing regional muscle.

A senior US defence official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said he expected the Saudis to initially commit to $30 billion to upgrade their fleet of aircraft, but that could double. Still, the final figure was unclear.

Musharraf raises Rs.240 mn for Pakistan flood relief

Islamabad, September 14: Pakistan’s former president Pervez Musharraf raised Rs.250 million through a televised campaign seeking relief for the flood-affected people in the country, a media report said Tuesday.

Taking part from London in a three-hour live “telethon” on Pakistan’s Dunya TV Sunday night, Musharraf appealed for funds and people from across the world responded generously, pledging upwards of Rs.250 million, DawnNews reported.

Threat to Hasina’s life, warn intelligence agencies

Dhaka, September 14: Intelligence agencies at home and abroad have warned of a threat to the life of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina that could take place between September and November, a media report said.

The intelligence agencies warned that simultaneous multiple sabotage might be carried out by “the anti-liberation war forces, in collaboration with an Indian separatist organisation and different local militant outfits”, The Daily Star newspaper said.

Chowmohallah Palace gets UNESCO award

Hyderabad, September 14: Chowmahalla Palace, the seat of power of Nizams, has bagged the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Merit Award for Culture Heritage Conservation.

“Chowmahalla Palace is the only palace in Andhra Pradesh and in the country which has got this prestigious award,” palace director G Kishan Rao told reporters in Hyderabad today.

The award presentation ceremony is likely to take place here in November, Rao said, adding it is a proud occasion and achievement for Hyderabad.

Salman Rushdie supports mosque near Ground Zero

New York, September 14: Controversial Indian-origin author Salman Rushdie has spoken out in support of a mosque near Ground Zero, an issue that has sparked a religious row in US amid opinion polls suggesting that majority of Americans oppose it.

“It’s just a stupid argument,” Rushdie said at the Brooklyn Book Festival in New York.

“Of course they should be able to build a mosque there,” he was quoted as saying by the New York Post.

I am not against telangana, why should they attack me

Mahabubnagar, September 14: The TDP chief, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, has questioned the TRS as to why they attacked him even after his assertion that he was not against the formation of Telangana State.

Talking to the media here after activists of the TRS and ABVP attacked his convoy earlier in the day, Mr Naidu said that the attack showed that those parties had no interest in people’s problems.

Chowmahalla palace recognized as world heritage property

Hyderabad, September 14: The famous Chowmahalla Palace of Hyderabad has got international recognition.

The unique architectural wonder was on Monday recognized by the UNESCO as one of the heritage structures.

This was disclosed by the Chowmahalla Palace Trust director, Mr G Kishan Rao, to the media here on Monday.

The Place complex, built by the erstwhile Nizams of Hyderabad was the seat of Asaf Jahi dynasty and was the official residence of Nizams.

Osama ‘grandchildren’ dead in attack

London, September 14: A surrogate mother carrying two grandchildren of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden has lost the twins, after she was attacked on her way home from a cafe in Syria, a media report said.

According to ‘The Sun’, bin Laden’s 29-year-old son Omar hired 24-year-old Louise Pollard from Bristol to have the kids for him and his estranged British wife Zaina.
