Football: India beat Namibia 2-0

New Delhi, September 15: India defeated Namibia 2-0 in an international football friendly at the Ambedkar Stadium on Wednesday.

Amid the disappointment of dropping 22 places to 160th in the FIFA rankings, there was finally some good news as India won 2-0 against higher ranked Namibia in their third international football friendly of the year here.

Strikes from Mehrajuddin Wadoo and Anthony Pereira brought back the cheers in the Indian team that was reeling after two consecutive losses against Thailand earlier this month.

HC imposes fine on Maha Principal Home Secy

Mumbai, September 15: Pulling up Maharashtra Government for not filing an affidavit in response to a petition alleging illegal detention of a COFEPOSA detenu, the Bombay High Court has asked Principal Home Secretary Medha Gadgil to pay a fine of Rs 5000 from her own pocket for this lapse.

Justice Ajay Khanvilkar and Justice U D Salvi observed that the state cannot behave in a casual manner in matters of alleged illegal detention, particularly in this case as the detenu has been confined to jail for more than six months.

Ijaz Butt to meet Pawar in Delhi

Islamabad, September 15: Pakistan cricket Chief (PCB) Ijaz Butt to meet ICC President Sharad Pawar in New Delhi.

According to the news, Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, is in India to meet ICC chief Sharad Pawar. While an official statement on his visit is awaited, it is understood that they will meet on Thursday to discuss the spot-fixing controversy, the resumption of bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan and issues related to World Cup revenues.

Musharraf to launch a new party

Islamabad, September 15: Former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday said that he would launch a new political party on October 1.

The retired general plans to a return to the frontlines of the country’s turbulent politics.

Musharraf also accused Afghan President Hamid Karzai of lacking “legitimacy” but urged the West to stay the course against the Taliban and not to abandon the restive region.

“I’m going to declare a party on October 1… We have to bring about a new political culture in Pakistan,” he said.

Sohrab case: brother accuses CBI of changing statement

Ahmedabad, September 15: One of the brothers of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, Nayamuddin, who is a witness in the fake encounter killing case, has alleged CBI has altered his statement and included some portions which he never said before it.

In a two-page affidavit sent to the special CBI court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate A Y Dave here today, Nayamuddin said three points, which he had not stated to CBI, have been included in his statement.

APPSC to re-conduct recruitment exam

UPA Govt has created two Indias: Yechury

Kolkata, September 15: Targetting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his “two Bengal” remarks, CPI(M) Politburo member Sitaram Yechury today said that the UPA government had created two Indias — ‘Suffering India’ and ‘Shining India’.

“A young leader from the ruling party has said that there are two Indias and it is good that the message has reached him,” Yechury told a SFI conference here without naming Gandhi.

“India is divided in two distinctive categories just as IPL and BPL,” he said claiming that the UPA government had created two Indias — ‘Suffering India’ and ‘Shining India’.

Mehbooba for unconditional dialogue on Kashmir

New Delhi, September 15: Mehbooba Mufti, president of Jammu and Kashmir’s principal opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said Wednesday that the central government should start an “unconditional dialogue on Kashmir” and the state government should free civilian protesters who had been arrested.

She sought the immediately release of youths booked under the Public Safety Act and asked the government to “lift the siege” laid to the Kashmir Valley.

BCCI disciplinary committee to resume hearing on Sep 26

New Delhi, September 15: The BCCI’s disciplinary committee, probing charges of financial irregularities against suspended IPL chairman Lalit Modi, will resume its hearing on September 26 here after the cross-examination process could not be completed despite a marathon session.

The cross examination of IMG official Peter Griffiths, a BCCI’s witness, could not be completed as Modi’s counsel Kotwal sought more time to question the witness.

Jalpaiguri, September 15: Congress is serious about forging an alliance with Trinamool Congress for the West Bengal assembly elections but this will be on honourable terms and “we cannot bow our head”, AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi asserted today.

AP Govt appeals to Telangana lawyers to call off stir

Hyderabad, September 15: Andhra Pradesh government today appealed to striking advocates of Telangana region to call off their agitation over 42 per cent reservation in different posts as it was ready to consider their “just” demands.

“We are pro-active and supportive. It is not correct to set deadlines as the Cabinet Sub-Committee needs time to go into details (on appointment of law officers). Just demands will be considered,” state ministers J Geetha Reddy and M Venkatramana told reporters here.

AP BJP chief Reddy, home guards in preventive custody

Hyderabad, September 15: Andhra Pradesh BJP President G Kishan Reddy and over 150 home guards were taken into preventive custody today here during a protest march.

The home guards led by Reddy, who is also state homeguards welfare association president, organised a rally from Babu Jagjivan Ram statue demanding higher salary.

When the ‘Chalo Secretariat’ procession reached near Basheerbagh cross road, police who had barricade the area stopped them from proceeding further which resulted in an argument between Reddy and the police.

Apex court pulls up cricket board

New Delhi, September 15: The Supreme Court Wednesday pulled up the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for claiming that its decision of not acting on a complaint by its former president A.C. Muthiah could not be questioned as it was an autonomous private body.

Muthiah had written to the BCCI that the award of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise of Chennai Super Kings to India Cements company was in breach of the cricketing body’s rules prohibiting its office bearers from engaging in conflict of interest activities.

PM says efforts should be made to enhance productivity

New Delhi, September 15: Projecting a nine to 10 per cent growth rate, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said efforts should be made to remove “deficiencies” to enhance productivity across all sectors of the economy.

He said the country’s economic performance in the last few years has been “impressive” and is poised to move to a trajectory of sustained high economic growth which is essential for fighting persistent poverty, hunger and disease that still afflicts millions of people.

Jaya moves HC seeking discharge from IT case

Chennai, September 15: Former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa today moved the Madras High Court for discharging her from a case regarding alleged willful failure to file wealth tax returns for 1992-93.

She also pleaded for setting aside a local court’s July 8 order, dismissing her application seeking discharge from the case.

When the petition came up for hearing, Justice P R Sivakumar directed issue of notice to the Assistant Commissioner of Wealth Tax, Circle II (2) returnable by September 27.

Cannot make public overlays contract documents: OC

New Delhi, September 15: The Organising Committee has refused to make public its documents of controversial contract with companies supplying overlays worth over Rs 630 crore for the Commonwealth Games.

The organising committee said disclosure of these documents would compromise commercial interests as the contracts are underway.

Replying to an RTI application, Organising Committee said, “The contracts are underway and copies cannot be provided at this stage.”

Emerging from the all-party meeting on Kashmir, PDP President Mehbooba Mufti said all parties should rise above their “political interests” and find a solution to the crisis.

Israel admits killing civilians in Gaza

Gaza, September 15: The Israeli army has admitted that three Palestinian men killed in a shelling strike in the northern Gaza Strip over the weekend were civilians.

On Sunday afternoon, Israeli troops fired five tank shells into the coastal sliver’s northern city of Beit Hanoun, near the Erez checkpoint.

The attack killed a 91-year-old man identified as Ibrahim Abu Said and his 21-year-old grandson, Ismail. The body of Hosam Khaled Ibrahim Abu Es’ayed, 16, was later found and handed over to hospital officials, according to Ma’an news agency.

Blast kills nine in northern Iraq

Baghdad, September 15: Nine Iraqi soldiers have been killed in a roadside bomb attack on the outskirts of the northern city of Mosul, marking the second deadly incident in the day.

The incident occurred at around 11:00 a.m. (0800 GMT) on Wednesday when a roadside explosion targeted Iraqi troops heading northwest from Mosul in a minibus, AFP quoted an Iraqi official as saying on condition of anonymity.

Six other soldiers, all members of the Iraqi army’s Third
Division, were wounded in the attack, he added.

Four killed, 20 injured in Jammu after Quran protests

Srinagar, September 15: At least four people were killed and 20 injured in Jammu region’s Mendhar town Wednesday following clashes between police and crowds protesting the alleged desecration of the Quran in the US.

Irate mobs regrouped in the town and started targeting government buildings. The protestors attacked a police station and there were reports that the deaths triggered more protests in surrounding areas.

‘Big press supporting Maoist cause’

Kolkata, Septembe 15: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has lashed out against a section of the “big press” for allegedly supporting the Maoists and said some journalists were sympathetic to the rebels without knowing their ideology.

“A section of the big press is always supporting the cause of Maoists. Some journalists may be sympathetic to the Maoists’ cause without having a concrete idea about their ideology,” Bhattacharjee said in an interview to the newly launched website of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) state unit.
