Peace and communal harmony to be maintained in MP: Chouhan

Bhopal, September 20: Madhya Pradesh Government was duty-bound to ensure security to all sections of the society and any attempt to disrupt peace in the state in the wake of ensuing Ayodhya verdict would not be allowed to succeed, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said today. Officials at all levels have been asked to keep a watch on the law and order situation ahead of and after the verdict, which is likely to come on September 24, he told reporters in at his residence here.

India teenager become America’s perfect Teen

London, September 20: Anysha Panesar, a 16-year-old Indian-origin teenager has been crowned America’s Perfect Teen. The only problem is she is British.

The teenager from Wales beat a host of American beauties to win the contest while on holiday in Florida and it has not gone down well with the losing candidates.

Parents of the American girls have protested to the organisers of the pageant, which has a USD 2,000 first prize, and an USD 18,000 scholarship to train as a TV broadcaster, reported Daily Mail online.

But Anysha has hit back, arguing the outcry is just sour grapes.

‘Odarpu yatra’ may continue for two years: AP minister

Hyderabad, September 20: Congress MP Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy’s controversial ‘Odarpu yatra’ will continue for over a year to cover all the districts in Andhra Pradesh, Mines Minister B Srinivasa Reddy said here today.

“The yatra will continue for another one-and-half-year or two years to cover all the districts,” Srinivasa Reddy, a close relative of the YSR’s family, told reporters.

Jagan has so far covered four of the total 23 districts in the state.

All-party teams meet Hurriyat leaders

Srinagar, September 20: In a bid to break the current impasse, teams of the all-party delegation to Kashmir today separately met Hurriyat leaders and gave them a patient hearing but the separatists insisted on withdrawal of army and asked the Centre to take bold decisions instead of being in a “denial mode”.

Chairman of hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Shah Geelani demanded that Jammu and Kashmir should be accepted as a “disputed” territory as a pre-condition for starting the dialogue process with the Centre.

Hearing on confirmation of Kasab’s death sentence

Mumbai, September 20: The Bombay High Court Monday fixed Oct 18 for starting daily hearings to confirm the death sentence awarded to Mumbai attack convict and Pakistani terrorist Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab.

A division bench of Justice Ranjana Desai and Justice Ranjit More also declined to entertain Kasab’s application seeking physical presence and ruled that he would remain present through video-conferencing, his lawyer Farhana Shah said.

NDA won’t win in Bihar: Lalu

Patna, September 20: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad asserted Monday that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will fail to lead the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to power in Bihar.

“It is certain that the JD-U-BJP (Janata Dal-United and Bharatiya Janata Party) government of Nitish Kumar will not win the (October-November) assembly elections,” Lalu Prasad told a press conference here.

The former railway minister launched a scathing attack on Nitish Kumar, alleging that rampant corruption had caused agony in the last five years.

No country expressed security fear after firing: Kalmadi

New Delhi, September 20: No country has expressed security fear and informed the organisers about pulling out of next month’s Commonwealth Games after Sunday’s firing incident that injured two foreign nationals here, Organising Committee Chairman Suresh Kalmadi said today.

Addressing the media after inaugurating the Main Press Center of the Games, along with Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni, Kalmadi assured the Commonwealth countries that India will ensure safety of all the athletes and officials.

Muslims in Oz protest against proposal to ban burqa

Melbourne, September 20: Muslims, including women and children, in Australia have staged a march in Sydney to protest against a proposal to ban burqa in the country, condemning it as part of the West’s “war on Islam”.

Women with veils and placards rallied in hundreds showing “my burqa – conviction not coercion” and “leave my mum alone – we love niqab” yesterday in a park in Punchbowl, southwestern Sydney, according to media reports here.

Ayodhya verdict: Govt identifies 32 sensitive places

New Delhi, September 20: The Centre has asked all states, particularly sensitive Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka, to give “top most priority” in beefing up security to deal with any law and order problem that may arise after the court verdict on Ayodhya title suits on Friday.

The Home Ministry has identified 32 sensitive locations across the country — four of them in Uttar Pradesh — where there is a potential to “evoke sharp reactions” following the verdict and asked concerned states to be fully alert there.

Yuvraj unhappy with omission, says he is in-form and fit

Patiala, September 20: Axed from the Test squad on grounds of poor form and fitness, Yuvraj Singh today insisted he was in good nick during the Sri Lanka tour and the selectors’ decision has come as a big disappointment for him.

Yuvraj, who has been struggling to cement his place in the Test side, felt scoring a century and a fifty in the two games he played in Sri Lanka should have earned him a place in the two-match series against Australia.

He had smashed 118 in the practice game before the first Test at Galle, where he made 52 in the first innings.

Mamata also said she does not do politics from a “bed of gold”.

“Amra dumurer phool noi (We are not a seasonal flower rarely seen) that we will appear like cuckoos before elections, chirp and fly away,” Mamata said yesterday without making any reference to the young AICC General Secretary but comments seen as directed at his two recent visits to West Bengal.

Lalu’s brother-in-law calls him dictator, resigns from RJD

Patna, September 20: The RJD today received yet another blow ahead of the Assembly elections in Bihar when party strongman and brother-in-law of former Chief Minister Lalu Prasad, Subhash Yadav, resigned from the party.

“RJD is a sinking boat and no one will like to ride this boat during the upcoming Assembly elections in Bihar. The captain of the RJD ship has lived his life and he is not in a position to navigate it to the jetty,” Yadav, who resigned from the primary membership of the party, told reporters here.

HC not to await Kasab’s appeal; throws out disrupting activist

Mumbai, September 20: Making it clear that it could not further wait for Ajmal Kasab to file an appeal against the trial court’s order sentencing him to death for his role in the 26/11 terror attack, the Bombay High Court Monday said it would proceed with confirmation of death sentence from October 11 or 18.

Government lawyer Ujjwal Nikam said the Pakistani terrorist had a threat perception and bringing him to court would be a great risk, to which the court suggested that Kasab could appear through the medium of video conference.

Mumbai, September 20: BCCI selectors announced the Indian squad for 2-Test rubber against Australia at Mohali from October 1 on Monday. Out-of-form and fitness, southpaw Yuvraj Singh was the biggest casualty of the draw as he was replaced by a new face in the dressing room – Cheteshwar Pujara.

Yuvraj Singh has been battling fitness issues from a long time now and his exit would pave way for Pujara, a constant good performer in the domestic circuit.

Islamabad, September 20: Five members of the visiting all-party delegation met hard-line separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani at his uptown Hyderpora residence on Monday afternoon.

Geelani, who is spearheading the ongoing agitation in Kashmir, rejected the invite from the state government to meet the 39-member delegation headed by Home Minister P Chidambaram. “The mandate of the delegation is limited to talking within the framework of the Indian Constitution,” Geelani had said, citing the reason why he refused to meet the delegation.

AIADMK MPs want CBI to probe threats to Jayalalithaa

Chennai,September 20: The AIADMK parliamentarians have urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to order a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the death threats received by their party leader J.Jayalalithaa.

In their Sep 19 letter to the prime minister released to the media here Monday, the MPs cited their meeting with him Sep 7 and their representation for a free and fair investigation of the threats.

India plans to create 150 mn skilled workforce by 2022

New Delhi, September 20: The National Skill Development Corporation, a joint venture between the government and industrial associations, targets to create 150 million skilled workforce in India by 2022 for sustaining high economic growth, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said Monday.

“We have a challenging target of creating a skilled workforce of 150 million persons by 2022. We have to take action to achieve this target by ramping up the capability of the NSDC. The movement is in the right direction,” Mukherjee said at a meeting with top NSDC officials here.

BJP seeks all-party meeting to discuss terror threat

New Delhi, September 20: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Monday asked the central government to convene an all-party meeting to chalk out a strategy for tackling the threat of terrorism in the country.

The suggestion was made by party leader Rajnath Singh, who visited the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital to see the two Taiwanese nationals injured in Sunday’s shooting incident near the historic Jama Masjid here.

Sania improves ranking after good show

New Delhi, September 20: Sania Mirza today gained 15 places in the WTA singles rankings to be 129th and jumped 20 positions in the doubles to 67th after a good show at the Guangzhou International Open in China.

Sania reached the quarter-finals of the singles event and won the doubles title along with Romania’s Edina Gallovits in China, last week. However, India’s men’s singles star Somdev Devvarman slid to 117, a loss of four places.

Ammonium nitrate used in car blast in Delhi

New Delhi, September 20: Ammonium nitrate was used to trigger the car explosion near Jama Masjid which took place just hours after an attack there on a vehicle carrying foreign tourists, the police said on Monday.

They said no RDX or detonator was used to carry out the explosion.

The explosion had taken place on Sunday, some 50m away from Gate No 3 of Jama Masjid and near a police station just hours after two Taiwanese nationals were shot and injured outside the mosque.

Putin to marry 24-yr-old gymnast?

London, September 20: Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has apparently split from his wife Ludmilla and is planning to tie the knot with 24-year-old gymnast Alina Kabaeva.

The revelation comes after a Moscow newspaper reported that Putin recently split with Ludmilla and is preparing to marry the young and very pretty Kabaeva.

A Russian website alleged that Alina was seen kissing Putin in a Moscow restaurant.

There is added piquancy to the fact that, despite her youth, Kabaeva has recently been made an MP.

Delhi is absolutely ready for Games: Chief Minister

New Delhi, September 20: With barely two weeks to go for the Commonwealth Games, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Monday reviewed the preparations and said the city was “now absolutely ready” and was aiming for “perfection” in various infrastructure and services.

Dikshit asked all the agencies involved in the Games-related project to constitute special teams to monitor the situation.

Nod for new flats as former MLAs refuse to vacate official quarters

Hyderabad, September 20: The state Cabinet on Monday decided to go ahead with a proposal of constructing 220 flats for MLAs in New and Old MLA Quarters at a cost of Rs 40 crore.

Briefing media persons after the Cabinet Meeting at the state Secretariat on Monday, Minister for Information and Broadcasting J Geetha Reddy revealed that the flats will be constructed in two phases. Work on 110 flats would be taken up in the first phase, while the second phase would see the rest of the flats being constructed.

Modi on a high after winning in Cong bastion

Kathlal, September 20: The victory of Bharatiya Janata Party in the Kathlal by-election in Gujarat has confirmed Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal in the state. Modi won in a traditional Congress bastion with a large Muslim population and the election result could redefine his political career.
