SC clears decks for UP panchayat polls

Uttar Pradesh, September 21: The Supreme Court on Tuesday cleared the decks for the holding of panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh with seat reservation for marginalised sections based on the 2001 census.

The apex court also issued notice to Pradeshiya Jan Jati Vikas Manch on the petition by the Uttar Pradesh government challenging the Allahabad High Court’s Sep 16 order imposing restrictions on the polls.

The panchayat elections will be held Sep 23-Oct 30.

President Pratibha Patil in Kolkata

Kolkata, September 21: President Pratibha Patil arrived in Kolkata on Tuesday evening to lay the foundation stone of the Joka-BBD Bag metro project.

She was greeted by West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and governor M.K. Narayanan at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International airport.

The president would lay the foundation stone at a programme to be held at Gurusaday Dutta sports, culture and education ground Wednesday morning.

She would fly to Aizwal on Friday.

Meanwhile, the security arrangement in and around the city has been beefed up.

Gilani flays ‘human rights violations’ in J&K

Islamabad, September 21: Pakistan today called on India to “review the practice” of describing Jammu and Kashmir as its “integral part” even as Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani flayed the alleged human rights violations in the Valley.

“Indians should quit the policy of finding a solution to the Kashmir issue under their constitution and they should review the practice of calling (Jammu and) Kashmir an integral part of India,” Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit told the media.

Hyderabad tightens security for Ganesh immersions

Hyderabad, September 21: Over 30,000 policemen were deployed and the military asked to stand by as massive security arrangements have been made for Ganesh idols immersion processions here Wednesday.

A thick security blanket has thrown around the route of the mammoth procession, which passes through the communally-sensitive old city before culminating at Hussain Sagar Lake in the heart of the city.

Four Iraqi soldiers among six killed in attacks

Kirkuk, September 21: Six people were killed, four of them Iraqi soldiers, in separate attacks in northern Iraq Tuesday, military sources said.

Some 250 km north of Baghdad in the city of Kirkuk, two Iraqi soldiers were killed and one injured when an explosive device went off as their patrol was driving through the centre of the city.

Further north of Kirkuk, two soldiers were killed and three injured in a car bomb attack in the city of Mosul.

Iran’s paramilitary force gets new missile

Tehran, September 21: Iran’s defence minister says the country’s powerful Revolutionary Guard has received its first batch of new missiles with enhanced guidance systems to hit ground targets.

Gen. Ahmad Vahidi says the defence ministry supplied the Guard with the upgraded surface-to-surface Fateh-110 missile, which was successfully test-fired last month. The weapon was developed by Iran’s Aerospace Industries Organisation.

Iran has been pushing to upgrade its missile arsenal, which already can target Israel and other parts of the region.

Lalu will disappear after elections: Nitish

Patna, September 21: Intensifying his attack on Lalu Prasad, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today asserted that the RJD chief stood no chance in the coming Assembly elections and he would “disappear completely” after the polls. “Lalu ji to abhi se gayab dikh rahe hain aur chunav ke baad pura gayab ho jayenge (Lalu is rarely seen these days, and after elections, he will disappear completely),” Kumar told reporters here.

Sania out of Tashkent Open first round

Tashkent (Uzbekistan), September 21: India’s Sania Mirza blew two match points to go down 1-6, 6-4, 5-7 against the 175th-ranked Russia’s Ekaterina Bychkova in the first round of the Tashkent Open tennis here Tuesday.

Sania, partnering Marai Elena Camerin of Italy, will start her doubles campaign here Wednesday.

Sania, ranked 125, and fresh from her doubles win at Guangzhou, arrived here late Monday night.

Watched by husband Shoaib Malik, the 23-year-old Indian looked rusty in the first set, going down in less than 30 minutes.

Satyam scam: Accused want framing of charges put off

Hyderabad, September 21: Alleging that the CBI probe was still incomplete, B Ramalinga Raju, the former Satyam Chairman and the prime accused in the estimated Rs 14,000 crore accounting scam, today moved the local court seeking postponement of framing of charges in the case.

Umamaheshwar Rao, Raju’s counsel, submitted before the XXI Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACCM) Court that no final report had been filed by CBI, probing the scam which came to light in January 2009, so far.

Satyam Computers to announce financials on Sept 29

Hyderabad, September 21: For the first time since its founder admitted to falsifying the company’s accounts, Satyam Computer will come out with its financials for fiscal years 2008-09 and 2009-10 on September 29.

The Board of Satyam, now acquired by Mahindra Group and since renamed Mahindra Satyam, will review the audited accounts of the company and the same would be submitted to the Company Law Board, a senior company official said.

Satyam’s founder B Ramalinga Raju had in January 2009 admitted to fudging the company’s accounts for years.

Games preparation: BJP terms situation as worrisome

New Delhi, September 21: The BJP today said the collapse of an under-construction foot overbridge at Jawaharlal Nehru stadium and the statements of Commonwealth Games Federation President Mike Fennel show that the situation is “worrisome” and asked the government to take appropriate steps.

“The situation is worrisome. Government is unable to convince us about both the level of preparedness and the security. What will make this government understand that this is a SOS situation?” BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said.

Suspected Pakistani spy held in Delhi

New Delhi, September 21: A Pakistani spy, who worked as a cab driver during his one-year stay in the country, has been arrested from south Delhi, police said Tuesday.

Sajjad Haider, 43, who hails from Lahore in Pakistan, was arrested by the anti-terror unit of Delhi Police, Special Cell, Sep 14 from a house in Samalkha Village in southwest Delhi, police said.

He was living in the capital under an assumed name of Mohammed Pervez. During his stay, the accused worked as a driver on cabs attached to call centres in Gurgaon and Delhi, a police official sai.

Action will be taken against defaulters: Raj Kumar Chauhan

New Delhi, September 21: Strict action will be taken against the defaulters in the collapse of an under-construction foot overbridge near the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the main venue of the Commonwealth Games, injuring 27 labourers, Delhi Public Works Department Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said Tuesday.

The Delhi government has called a high level meeting to fix responsibility for the collapse and decide the future course of action.

I was betrayed and stabbed from behind: Nayeemuddin

Kolkata, September 21: Lashing out at his detractors after being removed as Mohammedan Sporting coach, Dronacharya awardee Syed Nayeemuddin said he was betrayed and stabbed from behind.

The former India coach was fired post the second division I-League club’s failure to go past the Federation Cup qualifiers. “I have been betrayed from all quarters. I have been stabbed from behind,” Nayeemuddin said.

IPS officer dismissed on charges of ‘misuse of office’

Hyderabad, September 21: A senior IPS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre, Sreeram Tiwari, has been dismissed from service on grounds of alleged “misuse of office”.

“I am preparing to file the petition before the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT). The UPSC’s move is a gross injustice done to me. The action was initiated against me without any merit in the case,” Tiwari told PTI.

Tiwari, who is a 1982 batch IPS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre, was IGP (Organisation) in the state DGP office here.

HC directs CID to file affidavit in Nityananda case

Bangalore, September 21: The Karnataka High Court today directed the CID — probing criminal charges, including rape, against self-styled godman Nityananda — to file an affidavit on September 23 on the progress made in the case.

When the petition filed by Nityananda praying for quashing of the two FIRs came up before Justice Arali Nagaraj, the CID which was asked to file an affidavit on September 13, sought two days time to do so.

The court agreed to grant the time and adjourned the hearing to September 23.

New Delhi, September 21: Recognising India’s growing clout in the world, an official US report on global governance has declared the country the third most powerful nation after the United States and China.

The new global power lineup for 2010 compiling the world’s most powerful countries/regions recognised India as the third most powerful country behind the US and China, and predicted that its clout as well as that of China and Brazil would further rise by 2025.

Two Iraqi soldiers killed in Kirkuk

Baghdad, September 21: At least two Iraqi soldiers have been killed and one more has been injured after an improvised explosive device detonated in the northern city of Kirkuk.

According to Colonel Sherzad Murfali, the blast targeted an army patrol on the outskirts of Kirkuk on Tuesday, the Associated Press reported.

The northern city of Kirkuk is located some 290 km (180 miles) north of Baghdad.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the incident.

9 die in rain-related incidents in UP, flood situation worsens

Lucknow, September 21: Nine people died today in rain- related incidents in Uttar Pradesh where flood situation aggravated due to rise in the level of major rivers in several districts, affecting road and railway traffic. Three died in Ramabai Nagar, two deaths each were reported from Badaun and Shahjahanpur, while one each from Bareilly and Pilibhit, officials said.

Somalia’s Prime Minister resigns amid tensions

Mogadishu, September 21: Somalia’s prime minister resigned on Tuesday to prevent what he called political turmoil amid an impasse with the country’s president.

Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke told reporters he was resigning while standing alongside President Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed, who thanked the prime minister for what he called a “courageous decision.”

“After seeing that the political turmoil between me and the president has caused security vulnerability, I have decided to resign to save the nation and give a chance to others,” the prime minister said.

N Korea blasts S Korea-US exercise as nuclear war rehearsal

Seoul, Sepetember 21: North Korea denounced South Korea and the United States on Tuesday for planning anti-submarine drills in the Yellow Sea, describing them as a “nuclear war rehearsal”.

South Korea and the United States had planned a joint naval exercise from September 5 to 9 but it was delayed due to a typhoon.

Military officials were not available for comment but Yonhap news agency said the exercise would begin as early as next week.

Karnataka CM sacks three ministers

Bangalore, September 21: Ahead of cabinet reshuffle and expansion of the 32-month-old BJP Ministry tomorrow, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa sacked three ministers, including Gulihatti D Shekar, who had threatened to commit suicide if axed. The ministers who have been dropped are Shivana Gouda Naik (Adult Education) and Aravinda Limbaval (Higher Education) besides Shekar (Sports).

Centre not serious about Kashmir crisis: Hurriyat

Srinagar, September 21: A day after an all party delegation reached out to separatists in Kashmir, moderate faction of the Hurriyat Conference on Tuesday accused the Centre of not making a serious effort to address the Kashmir issue saying talks were not possible in a coercive atmosphere.
