Elections to civic bodies in Andhra postponed

Hyderabad, September 21: Elections to civic bodies have been put off. As the term of the present councils will expire by the end of this month, special officers would take over the administration.

The cabinet which met under the chiarmanship of chief minister K Rosaiah took a decision to this effect. The reasons given for deferring election is delay in determination of reservations for women and backward classes.

Traffic restrictions for Ganesh immersion

Hyderabad, September 21: City police have imposed restrictions on movement of vehicular traffic on the centralised Ganesh idol procession route from Keshavagiri to Tank bund on September 22.

Traffic will be diverted on the procession route which starts from Balapur in the Cyberabad police limits and enters the city limits at Keshavagiri. The procession would pass through the Kandikul Gate, Chatrinaka, Shalibanda, Charminar, Gulzar Houz, Afzalgunj, Moazamjahi Market, Abids and finally the Tank bund. The idols would be immersed from the NTR Marg and Tank bund.

Railways takes over catering from IRCTC

Hyderabad, September 21: In order to improve the quality of food served on trains and platforms, the Indian Railways has taken over catering services from the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd (IRCTC), said Derek O’Brien, chairman of the Passenger Services Committee.

The ministry’s Catering Policy 2010, which has come into force recently, strips the IRCTC of the responsibility of serving food on long-distance trains following complaints on its quality.

Two more die of swine flu in twin cities

Hyderabad, September 21: Two more persons died of swine flu today in the twin cities. As many as 25 deaths were reported since the outbreak of swine flu during the monsoon season in the state.

A 40-year-old male, native of Khammam and 24-year-old woman of Shamshabad airport colony, both undergoing treatment at Yashoda and Gandhi Hospital respectively in the city, died today morning.

Dr. Jayakumari, district medical and health officer told Express that the both patients were admitted with swine flu symptoms on Friday. The duo died today while undergoing treatment.

City lad dies while holidaying in US

Hyderabad, September 21: A youngster from Hyderabad, Ragidi Sai Venkat Reddy, met with a tragic end while holidaying in the USA.

The teenager, who had finished his Intermediate and was waiting to join in an engineering course, went to the US along with his sister for a visit. A couple of days ago, the car in which Sai Venkat was travelling skidded off the road and plunged into a river in Florida. Venkat drowned while two others in the car, including his sister R Mounika, escaped with injuries. They are undergoing treatment at a hospital.

The notices were issued yesterday on writ petitions filed by two journalists who alleged the scheme was “abruptly and arbitrarily” terminated despite completion of all formalities.

Compete with China, Modi tells Gujarat’s ceramic industry

Gandhinagar, September 21: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday hoped that the state’s ceramic industry will reinvent itself to provide strong competition to China in the global market.

He was speaking after inaugurating a German multinational company Duravit’s first ceramic sanitaryware manufacturing plant in India near Tarapur in central Gujarat.

Bus fare raised in Punjab

Punjab, September 21: The Punjab Government has decided to effect a hike in Punjab Roadways and PRTC bus fare by 10 paise per kilometer.

This was stated by State Transport Minister, Master Mohan Lal in Ludhiana on Tuesday.

He told reporters that passengers would have to pay 66 paise per kilometre instead of the earlier 56 paise.

The minister said the hike in fare would help in making up the loss of Rs 10 crore suffered by the state-owned roadways.

New Delhi, September 21: Rejecting criticism of his style of functioning, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Tuesday said that the main problem confronting the state was “political” and lessons need to be learned from the crisis that has seen strife across the Valley in the past few months.

Yeddyurppa drops three ministers

Karnataka, September 21: Ahead of the Cabinet reshuffle of the BJP government, the Karnataka Chief Minister B.S Yeddyurappa on Tuesday dropped three ministers and will induct six on Wednesday.

The axed ministers are Aravind Limbavali (Higher Education), K. Shivanagounda Naik (Mass Education and Public Libraries), and Goolihatti Shekar (Sports and Youth Affairs).

Governor H.R. Bhardwaj has accepted Yeddyurappa’s recommendation to drop the three ministers, a Raj Bhavan statement said.

Cong leader held in murder case

Mumbai, September 21: Mumbai police on Tuesday arrested a congress leader Mohammad Ali Shaikh in connection with the killing of a private shipping firm owner in Mumbai on September 15, police said.

Sayyed Chand Madar, 55, was shot at in broad daylight by two unidentified motorcyclists near Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) railway station in south Mumbai. He succumbed to his injuries the next day.

“We have arrested Shaikh in connection with the firing at CST and the subsequent death of Madar,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Nisar Tamboli.

Aurangabad arms haul case: Accused seeks speedy trial

Mumbai, September 21: One of the accused in the Aurangabad arms haul case has moved the Bombay High Court claiming that trial court is giving precedence to Mumbai serial train blasts case, which took place later in point of time.

Both the cases are being heard by special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act court, but petitioner Dr Shabbir Ahmed, who is in jail for over four and half years, has said in the petition that Special court is busy with train blasts case.

“This violates his right to equality, and to speedy trial,” Shabbir’s lawyer, Advocate Sushant Kunjuraman said.

Gujarat, September 21: The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday granted anticipatory bail to two absconders in Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case.

Yashpal Chudasama and Ajay Patel, the close aides of former state minister Amit Shah, were declared absconding accused after they failed to appear before the CBI despite several warrants.
