Four killed in US shooting

Washington, September 24: An Asian woman shot dead three people before killing herself Thursday at a house in the US city of Seattle, police said.

The victims were found at a Highland Park house in southwest Seattle. The shooter was described as an Asian woman who was wearing a white shirt and gray sweatpants, The Seattle Times reported quoting police.

The police said one of the victims — a 42-year-old woman — suffered three gun shots. At least one person was also injured in the incident.

Cong welcomes SC order deferring Ayodhya verdict

New Delhi, Setember 24: The Congress hailed the Supreme Court order staying by a week the Ram Janambhoomi- Babri Masjid title suit verdict, saying the party has always given first priority to a solution arrived through mutual agreement.

“The Supreme Court has given the order with good intentions and everybody should welcome it. The Congress has always believed that the first priority is that the issue is resolved through mutual understanding, goodwill and appreciating the feelings of each other.

Canada happy at Games village progress, athletes to reach Sunday

Toronto, September 24: Canadian officials, who Wednesday delayed the departure of their athletes for the Commonwealth Games, Thursday expressed satisfaction with progress being made at the athletes’ village and expected the event to take place as scheduled.

Canadian athletes are now scheduled to begin arriving in Delhi Sunday, CTV news channel reported.

If the progress are sustained, the Commonwealth Games will be held without any further setbacks, the TV channel quoted Scott Stevenson, director of Sport for Commonwealth Games Canada, as saying from New Delhi.

Too late for a compromise: Waqf lawyer Jilani

New Delhi, September 24: In the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s decision to stay the Allahabad High Court final judgement on the Babri Masjid title suit. Vicky Nanjappa spoke to Jafaryab Jilani, the lawyer who is representing the Muslim organistaions in this litigation.

“There is no chance for a compromise on the Ayodhya title suit and we will tell the Supreme Court the same thing when the matter is called out on September 28,” said Jilani, counsel for the Sunni Central Waqf Board after the Supreme court order.

Sohrabuddin case: Key witness says CBI threatened him

New Delhi, September 24: In a significant development, a key witness in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter on Thursday told a court that he was “threatened” by the CBI into making false statements in the case.

In an affidavit filed in the special CBI court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate A Y Dave, Azam Khan retracted from the statement that the Central agency has included in the charge sheet filed in the 2005 case.

CM pats cops, but warns against laxity

Government takes a U-turn, makes partial changes

Hyderabad, September 23: With the hike in stamp duty on various property deeds receiving severe opposition from the real estate, the state government took a U-turn making partial changes in the orders. The stamp duty on development-cum-general power of attorney (DGPA) will continue to be at the existing one per cent. Though the agreement-cum-general power of attorney (AGPA) and agreement of sale (AOS) deeds will attract five per cent stamp duty, the amount will be adjusted at later stage during sale.

Maoists urged not to kill other party revolution

Hyderabad, September 23: A group of intellectuals and democrats on Tuesday appealed to the Maoists not to kill leaders of other revolutionary parties. They wanted the Maoists to sort out their differences with other revolutionary parties through discussions as any attempts to eliminate their opponents physically would be a blow to revolutionary movement. They strongly condemned the killing of Kendruka Arjun, the Koraput district (Orissa) secretary of Chasi Muliya Adivasi Sangh by Maoists on August 9.

2 persons murdered in the city

Hyderabad, September 23: Two persons were murdered in separate incidents in the city since Tuesday night.

At Kalapather in the Old City, a 33-year-old property offender was allegedly murdered by his co-brother late on Tuesday night.

The victim, Mir Akbar Ali alias Akbar was a resident of Ali Bagh. He was a property offender.

He is survived by his wife M Begum and three children.

Ganesh immersion proves fatal to boy, constable

Hyderabad, September 23: Ganesh idol immersion festivities proved fatal for a three-year boy after he accidentally fell from a moving truck carrying a Ganesh idol at Chatrinaka today.

The boy, Sravan, fell off from a truck while he was being handed over to his mother from the truck.

Sravan was the son of Kiran Kumar, a tailor from Chatrinaka. Kiran Kumar along with his son boarded a truck carrying the Ganesh idol installed in the locality.

TRS wants Telangana doctor as NIMS director

Hyderabad, September 23: TRS deputy leader in the Assembly T Harish Rao on Wednesday warned the government of agitation if no doctor from Telangana is posted as director of Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS).

As the present director’s term is coming to an end, a search committee has been constituted but going by the past experience, it is likely that this time too a doctor from Andhra region might be posted and hence the warning, Rao told newsmen here.

Hyderabad, September 23: In a significant development, the Osmania University Joint Action Committee (OU-JAC) on Wednesday lashed out at TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao for “mortgaging” the Telangana movement to Seema-Andhra “capitalists.” Taking objection to the TRS chief ’s participation in a CEOs’ conference earlier in the day, the OU-JAC said Chandrasekhar Rao had ditched the movement midway after promising a separate State where people could live with self-respect and get jobs.

Blast rocks Sompeta whistleblower’s hospital

Vishakapatnam, September 23: Unidentified miscreants set off a bomb explosion at a hospital run by the whistleblower of Sompeta on Wednesday. The nursing home was partially damaged but no one was injured.

Dr Krishna Murthy, president of the Paryavarana Parirakshana Samithi (PPS), has been spearheading the movement to stop a thermal power plant being built by Nagarjuna Construction Company (NCC) in the Beela near Sompeta.

SCR to run special trains to Tirupati, Kakinada

Hyderabad, September 23: To clear extra rush of passengers, the South Central Railway will run five special trains between various destinations during September.

Secunderabad-Tirupati special trains: The train will depart from Secunderabad on September 25 at 20.30 hrs and arrive in Tirupati at 08.50 hrs the next day.

In the return direction, the train will depart from Tirupati on September 26 at 17.20 hrs and arrive in Secunderabad at 06.05 hrs the next day.

‘Government biased against Opposition’

Sangareddy, September 23: Medak MP and district vigilance and monitoring committee chairman Vijayasanthi flayed the government’s biased attitude in sanctioning funds for development works for leaders of opposition parties.

Presiding over a vigilance and monitoring committee meeting here today, the MP expressed displeasure over the way the governmentis handling things.

‘’I sent proposals worth Rs 5.5 crore to the government for construction of roads in Medak constituency, under the national rural employment guarantee scheme but it is yet to sanction the same,’’ she maintained.

15 persons found sending provocative SMSes

Hyderabad, September 23: City police have so far identified 15 persons responsible for circulation of provocative SMSes ahead of the September 24 Allahabad High Court verdict on the Babri Masjid-Ram Mandir issue. Several SMSes of provocative nature were doing rounds which might create communal tension, according to police.

‘There are more important issues than Ayodhya’

Guwahati, September 23: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday suggested that there are more important fundamental issues like education and infrastructure than Ayodhya.

Interacting with students at IIT Guwahati, Gandhi said, “my personal view is that there are many many fundamental issues that are much more important like infrastructure, the type of education we are providing to our youngsters and the type of technology we use”.

Explosives seized in Bihar

Bihar, September 23: Police on Thursday seized 1.5 lakh detonators and 1,500 kg of powergels from the residence of an arms dealer at Jamuar village in Bihar’s Rohtas district.

SP Vikas Vaibhav told reporters here that the arms dealer had stocked the explosives at his native village and was supposed to supply them to Naxalites.

Vaibhav said Sukhdeo Tiwari, having license to sell and purchase firearms in Karwambia locality of the district, had received a consignment from Orissa.

Tiwari was being questioned about his possible links with Naxalites, Vaibhav said.

Family perish in house collapse

Uttar pradesh, September 23: Five members of a family were killed when their house collapsed following heavy rains in Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh, the Home Department said on Thursday.

The incident happened in Mata colony in Kotwali area last night, it said adding the dead included four children, all below eight years.

The bodies had been sent for post mortem.
