Ayodhya verdict: Another party to move apex court

Lucknow, September 27: After petitioner Ramesh Chandra Tripathi, who had sought deferment of the Ayodhya verdict, another key party in the matter Nirmohi Akhara plans to move the Supreme Court for postponement of the judgment for three months to facilitate an out-of-court amicable settlement, a lawyer said Monday.

This was disclosed by Nirmohi Akhara counsel Ranjit Lal Verma here just before leaving for Delhi to move an application in the apex court.

“I am heading for Delhi to move an application before the apex court for postponing the verdict for three months,” Lal told IANS.

Five Al Qaeda men killed in Yemen

Sanaa, September 27: Five Al Qaeda members have been killed and 32 suspects arrested during a three-day military offensive in Yemen, the interior ministry said Sunday.

According to a statement posted on the ministry’s website, two security personnel were also killed during the operation which was carried out in Hota town of Shabwa province Sep 22-24.

The country’s defence ministry said Friday that combined forces of security and army units had cleansed Hota town of the entrenched Al Qaeda militants and forced the rest to flee to surrounding mountains, Xinhua reported.

Another Indian attacked in Australia

Australia, September 27: In yet another racial attack in Australia, a 21-year-old man was reportedly assaulted by four teenagers after confirming his nationality.

According to the police, the man was on his way to the Sandown Park rail station when four teenage males on bike approached him and asked him if he was Indian.

After the boy confirmed his nationality, the teenagers, who were carrying baseball bats, hit him from behind.

Two passers-by took the man home, she said. He was bruised and had a large cut on his nose. He told police his attackers looked about 15-16 years old.

Delhi rides on Kalindi Kunj giant wheel

New Delhi, September 27: The national Capital is all set to get its on Eye on the lines of London Eye and Singapore Flyer.

The Baadshah of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan, will inaugurate the 45 meter high wheel ‘Delhi Eye’ on the banks of Yamuna.

The ‘Delhi Eye’ will be installed at an Amusement Park in Kalindi Kunj locality along the Delhi-Noida border.

The giant wheel is as tall as a 15-storey building. It will provide a snapshot of historical monuments located in Delhi.

TDP leader Chalasani Pandu killed

New Delhi, September 27: TDP leader Chalasani Pandu was found dead under mysterious circumstances at his flat in Swapnika Perl apartment.

According to the police, Pandu was suspected to be murdered over some illegal land settlement issue. Commission row could not be ruled out behind his murder.

Chalasani Pandu, who fought 1999 election unsuccessfully from Vuyyuru Assembly, entered his flat with personal assistant Mahender Reddy.

Watchman of the Appartment claimed to see Reddy escaping from window in the midnight.

Talks can’t solve Ayodhya dispute: Sunnis to SC

New Delhi, September 27: The Sunni WAKF Board has filed an affidavit to the Supreme Court on the Ayodhya dispute, saying the matter cannot be sorted out through reconciliation.

Meanwhile, Union Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee said Monday contesting parties in the Ayodhya title suit have to resolve the issue through discussions or accept the court verdict.

“The two contesting parties who filed the Ayodhya title suit have to resolve the matter among themselves through discussions.

Two more crude bombs found in Vadodara

Vadodra, September 27: The Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) and Panigate police recovered two crude bombs near Sulaimani Chawl in Panigate in Vadodara city in the early hours of Sunday. Six such bombs were recovered from Yakutpura two days ago.

The DCB said the bombs were kept in a plastic bag in an open compound outside a residential apartment.

On a tip-off, a team of DCB and Panigate police officers began searching Sulaimani Chawl and the neighbouring areas around 3:30 am on Sunday morning.

TDP leader Chalasani Pandu killed

Hyderabad, September 27: Telugu Desam Party leader Chalasani Venkateswara Rao, alias Pandu, was found murdered in an apartment at Madhuranagar here this morning, police said.

Pandu, hails from Krishna District and had contested Assembly elections unsuccessfully on three occasions. Police however, ruled out any political conspiracy in the murder and said “real estate transactions could be the possible cause.”

PCB will not allow tainted trio in domestic matches

Karachi, September 27: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ijaz Butt Monday ruled out allowing the tainted trio of Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir to compete in the domestic season that will resume from next week.

Butt said the three players have been suspended by the International Cricket Council (ICC) which is why the PCB cannot even allow them to feature in domestic events, including the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy – the country’s premier first-class tournament.

Decision on lifting of cases against students soon: Sabitha

Hyderabad, September 27: Home Minister P Sabitha Indra Reddy on Sunday stated the government would make an announcement on lifting of police cases against students, who participated in the bifurcation of statehood agitation, after conducting a review meeting with officials.

Talking to media persons after participating in a series of development programmes at Rajendranagar in the City on Sunday, Ms Indra Reddy said that a decision on lifting police cases against students would be taken within three to four days.

Suspected Maoists abduct Orissa village council head

Bhubaneswar, September 27: Suspected Maoists have abducted a village council chief in Orissa’s Koraput district, police said Monday.

Four suspected rebels kidnapped Chingu Jani, the sarpanch of Dumuripadar panchayat, when he was standing near a tea stall with other people in Mathiliput village Sunday, a police officer said.

They whisked him away into a waiting Tata Sumo and disappeared, the officer told IANS. The rebels had threatened him in the past as well, accusing him of carrying out anti-people activities, he said.

Flood situation in Agra worsens

Agra, September 27: The flood situation in the Agra region took an alarming turn as the water level in Yamuna crossed the medium flood level of 152.09 metres Sunday evening, submerging most of the Taj Heritage Corridor and the waterworks, cutting off supplies to half of this Taj city

The river level is feared to touch 152.4 metres Monday morning, according to officials here.

More colonies and ghats were under water and the district authorities continued to persuade people to shift to safer areas.

Earthquake hits Aleutian Islands of US

New York, September 27: An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale jolted Aleutian Islands of the US state of Alaska Sunday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The tremor occurred about 9:27 a.m. local time (1827 GMT) at a depth of 226 km, with its epicentre some 2,070 km west-southwest of Anchorage, Xinhua reported citing the USGS.

No tsunami warning was issued after the earthquake, whose magnitude was preliminarily measured at 6.2 by the USGS.

30 killed as NATO helicopters strike in Pak

Islamabad, September 27: At least 30 people were killed as two NATO helicopters struck Pakistan’s northwest tribal area bordering Afghanistan in the wee hours of Monday, media reports said.

Afghanistan-based NATO helicopters fired at the militants hiding in the Pakistani side who earlier launched an attack at a NATO check post in the Khost area of Afghanistan, Xinhua reported quoting local media.

Most of the people killed in the incident were believed to be militants.

New Delhi, September 27: The bid for the Commonwealth Games 2010 was spurred by an appeal made by students of 120 schools of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), says sports writer and filmmaker Sunil Yash Kalra.

“They prepared a memorandum, put their signatures and said, ‘Hey, we want the Commonwealth Games’,” Kalra told IANS.
