Over four mn unemployed in Spain

Madrid, October 05: The number of unemployed people in Spain reached over four million this September, the labour and immigration ministry said.

In September, there were 48,102 more “newly unemployed” compared to August, out of a total of 4.17 million, Prensa Latina reported citing a ministry statement.

The number of jobless who registered with the state rose in one year to 308,316, an 8.3 percent year-on-year increase.

10 dead as police, terrorists clash in Tajikistan

Dushanbe, October 04: Four policemen and at least six Islamist militants were killed Monday in gun battles in Tajikistan amid a worsening security situation in the Central Asian republic, a defence ministry official said Monday.

Suspected terrorists had killed 26 soldiers just two weeks ago during an attack on a military convoy.

Observers have watched the escalating violence with concern, suggesting that a civil war could break out and that the position of authoritarian President Emomali Rahmon has been weakened.

Maoists, police exchange fire in Andhra Pradesh

Hyderabad, October 04: Police exchanged fire with armed Maoists in Khammam district of Andhra Pradesh Monday, but there were no casualties on either side.

The gunfight broke out at around 1.00 pm when a police team, on a combing operation, noticed movement of Naxals in the forests in Ashwaraopet mandal of the district bordering Chhattisgarh, police said.

The rebels managed to escape from the spot, they said, adding no casualties were reported from either side.

No let up in war of words in AP Congress over Telangana

Hyderabad, October 04: Despite several appeals from the state Congress leadership, party leaders in Andhra Pradesh today continued their war of words over the Telangana issue.

Karimnagar MP Ponnam Prabhakar took exception to the criticism of Congress Working Committee member K Keshav Rao by party Whip S Sailajanath.

“Keshav Rao never spoke in a way that hurts the party. It is not correct for Sailajanath to criticise Keshav Rao. We will ask PCC (Pradesh Congress Committee) President D Srinivas to take action against Sailajanath,” Prabhakar said.

Happy to be back to form after injury: Yuvraj

Jaipur, October 04: Out of favour for the Indian Test team, Yuvraj Singh today refused to read much on the timing of his double ton against Mumbai in the Irani Trophy and said he was happy to be back to form after an injury lay-off.

“I don’t care about the timing. I wanted to be back in form after long lay off due to injury. I am happy that I did it,” said Yuvraj, skipper of Rest of India against Mumbai in the Irani Trophy match.

CBI summons Raju for further questioning

Hyderabad, October 04: The CBI, probing the multi-crore accounting scam in Satyam Computers, today issued a notice to former Chairman of the IT firm, B Ramalinga Raju asking him to appear before it tomorrow for further questioning.

Raju, the prime accused in the Satyam scam case, who was discharged from the NIMS hospital here last week after treatment for Hepatitis-C and heart problem since September last, would be grilled as part of investigation into the Satyam fraud case, a senior CBI official told PTI here.

Turkey dismisses US sanctions on Iran

Trukey, October 04: Turkish State Minister for Foreign Trade Zafar Caglayan says Ankara will not allow US-engineered sanctions imposed against Iran hamper business with the oil-rich country.

Caglayan said Monday that Turkey, a non-permanent UN Security Council (UNSC) member, would only heed sanctions imposed by the UNSC.

“Turkey will act in line with UN decisions. But decisions made by the United States on its own do not bind us,” he added.

The minister hinted that US sanctions seemed to be aimed at imposing a complete blockade on Iran.

HP govt paying Rs 4450 crore towards salaries of employees: CM

Shimla, October 04: Himachal Pradesh government was incurring an annual expenditure of Rs 4450 crore for payment of salaries of employees and taking care of demands and grievances of its employees, Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal said today. Inaugurating a two-day conference of National State government Employees Federation here, Dhumal said the 13th Finance Commission had under-assessed the committed liabilities of the state on payment of salary and pension of employees, loans and interest by more than Rs 1800 crore, which was “great injustice” to people.

Notification issued for 3rd phase poll in Bihar

Patna, October 04: The Election Commission on Monday issued the notification for holding elections to 48 Assembly seats in Bihar going to poll in the third phase on October 28.

“We have issued the notification for holding elections to 48 Assembly constituencies in the third phase by order of the Governor Devanand Konwar,” additional chief electoral officer Kumar Anshumali said.

The scrutiny of papers will be done on October 12 while October 14 would be the last date for withdrawal of candidatures for the phase, he said.

Taliban attacks NATO supply trucks in Pakistan

Islamabad, October 04: The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility Monday for a pre-dawn attack on tankers carrying fuel to Afghanistan for US and other NATO forces, left vulnerable on the side of the road after Pakistan shut down a key border crossing.

About a dozen militants peppered the vehicles parked at a truck stop on the outskirts of the capital Islamabad with automatic gunfire. Some 20 trucks went up in flames and four people were killed and seven injured, authorities said.

NATO chief apologises, Pakistani Taliban vow revenge

Washington, Octoner 04: NATO’s chief expressed regret on Monday for the deaths of Pakistani soldiers last week and said he hoped Pakistan’s border would reopen for NATO supplies to Afghanistan as soon as possible.

Angered by repeated attacks by NATO helicopters on militant targets within its borders, Pakistan blocked one of the supply routes for NATO troops in Afghanistan after a strike killed three Pakistani soldiers in the western Kurram region.

Non- Bailable Warrant against Andhra cop for cheating girl

Hyderabad, October 04: A court in Andhra Pradesh Monday issued a non-bailable warrant against a police official for allegedly cheating a girl with the promise of marrying her.

A magistrate at Ponnur in Guntur district issued the warrant against Sub Inspector Ranganath Goud for not appearing before the court.

The court directed the police to arrest Goud and produce him before Oct 12.

Goud, who is currently working in Nellore district, has not appeared in the court for the last eight weeks and the court has taken serious note of this.

No further ban on bulk SMS and MMS

New Delhi, October 04: As the country has remained peaceful after the verdict on Ayodhya title suit, the government has decided not to extend the ban on the services of bulk SMSes and MMSes imposed till tonight.

The ban on bulk SMSes and MMSes, to check any propaganda post Ayodhya verdict, was first imposed on September 22 which was later extended till tonight, official sources said.

The Centre also decided to withdraw paramilitary forces kept in alert in various parts of the country as the country remained peaceful even four days after the Allahabad High Court order.

Washington, October 04: Pakistan-based terrorists plotting to carry out Mumbai-style killings in European cities had on their sight landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, as well as Berlin’s Central Station, a media report said today.

The names of the high-profile targets were revealed as the US issued a travel advisory asking its citizens to guard against potential terror threats while in Europe.

Omar seeks PM’s help for Haj pilgrims from J-K

New Delhi, October 04: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today sought the intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for making a special arrangement for over 6,700 Haj pilgrims from the state in absence of a direct flight to Mecca from Srinagar this year.

Omar met the Prime Minister and apprised him of the situation that has arisen after national carrier Air India lost the bid this year to Saudi airlines for ferrying pilgrims from India.

BJP for negotiated settlement on Ayodhya issue

Pune, October 04: BJP today said the Centre should initiate or facilitate a process of dialogue to arrive at a negotiated settlement between Hindus and Muslims on Ayodhya issue in the wake of the Allahabad high court judgment on Ayodhya title suits.

A negotiated settlement would be a desirable option as disposal of an appeal against the verdict in the Supreme court would be a time-consuming process, party spokesman Prakash Jawdekar told reporters here.

US-led soldier killed in Afghanistan

Kabul, Ocotober 04: Another US-led soldier has been killed in a bomb blast in southern Afghanistan, NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) has announced.

NATO said in a statement that one of its service members lost his life when an improvised explosive device detonated on Monday.

According to Associated Press, NATO did not reveal the nationality of the soldier or exact location of the incident.

SC declines bail to Purohit in Malegaon blast case

New Delhi, October 04: The Supreme Court today declined to grant bail to Lieutenant Colonel SP Purohit, one of the key accused in the case relating to 2008 Malegaon bomb blasts which killed seven people.

“It is a grievous offence. Many people were killed. The trial is still on,” the apex court said when Purohit’s counsel submitted that the accused was languishing in jail for the past two years.

WB CM meets PM; seeks central funds for pending projects

New Delhi, October 04: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here and sought central assistance for some pending developmental projects in the state. Bhattacharjee is also understood to have raised issues concerning certain projects during the meeting which lasted about 40 minutes, state government sources said.

‘Iran stepping up war on drugs’

Tehran, October 04: Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar says the country has stepped up its fight against narco-trafficking and drug lords, using the latest means and methods.

“Iran has intensified its campaign, using modern means, to track down drug smuggling gangs,” Mohammad-Najjar was quoted by Fars news agency as saying late Sunday.

All provinces, governorates and districts should use their ‘authority’ to combat illicit drugs, he said in a meeting on combating drugs in the southeastern Iranian province of Sistan-Baluchestan.

32 TN fishermen in Qatar prison

Nagercoil, October 03:: Thirty-two Tamil Nadu fishermen are lodged in a Qatar prison for the past two months after they were taken into custody by the Qatar coastguard for straying into that country’s waters, official sources here said Monday.

Eighteen fishermen from Kadiyapattinam and 14 from Inayam, Muttom and Periyavillai in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, working in Saudi Arabia, had strayed into Qatar waters and were arrested by that country’s Coastguard on July 10.

BJP legislator wants women member in Jharkhand cabinet

Ranchi, October 03: Jharkhand woman legislator Maneka Sardar is advocating that her party, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), give place to a woman in the state cabinet, but Chief Minister Arjun Munda says the list has already been finalised.

“We have told our party leaders that a woman should be made minister. Women should be given more space in politics,” Sardar told IANS.
