US, China must strengthen trust to tackle problems

American and Chinese economies and societies have never been as closely joined as they are today, but strengthening trust between the two countries is essential to tackle big problems, said a report.

The report entitled “Building US-China Trust: Through Next Generation People, Platforms and Programmes” is a joint project by the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California and the School of International Studies of Peking University, reported Xinhua.

Clear day ahead in Delhi

It will be a clear Wednesday in Delhi with a minimum temperature of 21.6 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season’s average.

The water level in the Mettur dam today stood at 37.46 feet against its full level of 120 feet.

Myanmar kids face threats due to Kachin fighting: Unicef

The Unicef has warned that children fraternity in Myanmar is facing different types of dangers in the light of recent fighting between government forces and Kachin rebels.

The recent fighting and the resulting displacement of thousands of people, have significantly increased the risks to young people, including possible recruitment, limited access to basic services and the threat of landmines, Xinhua quoted the Unicef as saying Tuesday.

Ukraine on alert after politician killed

Ukraine’s acting president Oleksandr Turchynov has ordered relaunching military operations against pro-Russian militants in the east after two people, one a local politician, were “tortured to death”.

The body of politician Vladimir Rybak, he said, was found near rebel-held Sloviansk, BBC reported Wednesday. The move came as US Vice-President Joe Biden was visiting Ukraine.

“The terrorists who effectively took the whole Donetsk region hostage have now gone too far,” he said.

Landslide threatens Mont Blanc tunnel in Italy

A series of landslides over the past few days have disrupted traffic near Courmayeur, a renowned tourist resort in the Italian Alps, forcing temporarily closure of Mont Blanc tunnel, local reports said Tuesday.

Around 20,000 cubic meters of mud and rock fell Monday night, while another estimated 400,000 cubic meters of earth were on the move triggered by rising temperatures, Xinhua reported.

Local authorities reportedly closed Mont Blanc tunnel, which links Italy and France, for about two hours as a result of the crashing rocks.

UN envoy condemns lawmakers’ killing in Somalia

A top UN official in Somalia Tuesday strongly condemned the murder of Somali lawmaker Abdelaziz Isaq Mursal, the second one to have been killed in less than 48 hours in the capital city of Mogadishu.

Nicholas Kay, the UN Secretary-General’s special representative for Somalia, said he was concerned by the recent attacks seen in Mogadishu and called on the authorities to investigate them and bring the perpetrators to justice at the earliest, Xinhua quoted UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric as telling reporters here at the daily briefing.

Nine held in Venezuela for financing violent protests

Nine people have been arrested on charges of leading, financing and organising violent anti-government protests in the Caracas municipality of Chacao, Venezuela’s interior minister reported Tuesday.

Thanks to “previous intelligence operations”, Miguel Rodriguez said, 10 homes were raided before dawn Tuesday, surprising nine people including one who, “according to people detained several days before, were handing out money” to demonstrators.

Police today registered cases against Dr Anbumani Ramadoss, former union Health Minister and PMK candidate for Dharmapuri Lok Sabha seat, and eight others for violation of Model Code of Conduct as they continued campaigning even after the restricted time.

Campaigning for the April 24 polls ended at 5 PM today.

But the PMK cadres continued their meeting even after the restricted time. They also abused the police and other officials who asked them to stop the campaigning, police said.

Egypt cleared for US military aid

The Obama administration has said it has certified to Congress that Egypt is sustaining the strategic relationship with the US, which makes it eligible for American military aide.

“Today, Secretary Kerry spoke with Egyptian Foreign Minister Fahmy to inform him that he is certifying to Congress that Egypt is sustaining the strategic relationship with the United States – including by countering transnational threats such as terrorism and weapons proliferation – and that Egypt is upholding its obligations under the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty,” State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki said.

Ukraine relaunches anti-rebel operation after Biden leaves

Ukraine relaunched military operations against pro-Kremlin separatists, hours after US Vice President Joe Biden ended a two-day visit to Kiev in which he warned Russia over its actions in the former Soviet republic.

The US Defence Department at the same time announced yesterday it was sending 600 troops to neighbouring Poland and to Baltic countries for “exercises”.

Russia already has tens of thousands of its troops massed on Ukraine’s eastern border.

Sao Paulo express interest in Kaka

SC order renders all mining leases in Goa illegal: Parrikar

The Supreme Court order on iron ore extraction has rendered all mining leases in Goa “illegal” and the State Government will have to put in place a mechanism to legalise them, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said.

He said the Government is not inclined to follow the first-cum-first-served principle and a transparent policy will be put in place to offer the mines for operation.
