Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Shazia Ilmi on Wednesday said her statement asking Muslim leaders to be ‘communal’, has been distorted and misconstrued.

“I am shocked that my statement has been distorted and misconstrued as ‘communal’ and ‘inciting hatred’. My party has always stood against communalism and will continue to do so,” said Shazia.

“It is pretty evident in the conversation that I am using the word ‘secular’ and ‘communal’ in an ironic manner. The point was simply to say that the Muslim community has allowed itself to be used for secular politics,” she added.

Gujarat cop on Modi security duty dies of heart attack

A Gujarat police official, who was here in connection with Narendra Modi’s scheduled poll rally tomorrow, died of heart attack today.

Assistant Sub-inspector of Gujarat police Ramesh Bhai Chaudhary was a member of the bomb disposal squad.

He was rushed to Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where he died during treatment, DSP headquarters Jairam Ramesh said.

Mulayam no hero for Mainpuri’s young

Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav is no longer a hero for the young in Mainpuri, the constituency which sent him to parliament seven times.

Naziya Parveen, 25, a primary school teacher in Bhongaon, told IANS: “Mulayam is definitely not a hero for us.”

Ironically, Yadav’s falling reputation among the young stems from acts aimed at helping them.

In 1991, the state’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government had pushed through a law that made cheating a non-bailable offence.

Warrants issued against Giriraj Singh

Sri Lanka to deport British tourist over Buddha tattoo

Sri Lanka is set to deport a British tourist because of a tattoo of Buddha on her arm.

The Sri Lankan police said Naomi Coleman was arrested at Bandaranaike international airport in Colombo, after she arrived from India.

According to the Guardian, a police spokesman said the 37-year-old was arrested for ‘hurting others’ religious feelings’ after the tattoo of Buddha seated on a lotus flower was spotted on her right arm.

Buddhism is the religion of the country’s majority ethnic Sinhalese, and Buddhist tattoos are seen as culturally insensitive, the report said.

North Korea steps up activities at new nuclear test site

North Korea has reportedly increased activities at its main nuclear test site , South Korea’s Defence Ministry has said.

The move has prompted South Korea and the United States to prepare for a new nuclear missile test by Pyongyang.

The announcement came ahead of President Barack Obama’s scheduled trip to Japan and South Korea later this week, Fox News reports.

Defense Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said the South Korean intelligence had ‘detected various types of activities at Punggye-ri’, referring to the test site in northeastern North Korea, the report said.

Congress criticizes Shazia Ilmi over ‘communal’ remark

The Congress party on Wednesday strongly criticized Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Shazia Ilmi over her statement that ‘Muslims need to be communal’, and described it as ‘childish’.

New high-speed lift at Guangzhou CTF Financial Centre set to climb 95 floors in just 43 secs

Hitachi has announced that its new high-speed elevator for the Guangzhou CTF Financial Centre will travel 1,200 meters per minute (45mph), a speed that will allow it to reach the 95th floor in just 43 seconds.

Along with its sister machine it is to be the flagship of a 95 lift fleet that will bear economists, officials and guests up and down the 530 meter tall building. The sky scraper will even be fitted with double decker lifts to utilise all vertical space, the Independent reported.

Former Manchester United star Gary Neville has said that the club owners should have given more time to boss David Moyes before sacking him.

Neville said that he does not like the way in which the club is portraying itself following Moyes’ axing.

Sixth phase of LS polls for 117 seats to be held tomorrow

The sixth phase of Lok Sabha elections for which campaigning ended on Tuesday evening, will be held on Thursday.

Polling will take place in 117 Lok Sabha constituencies spread across eleven states and one union territory.

Polls will be held for 39 seats in Tamil Nadu, 19 in Maharashtra, 12 in Uttar Pradesh, 10 in Madhya Pradesh, seven each in Bihar and Chhattisgarh, six each in Assam and West Bengal, five in Rajasthan, four in Jharkhand, one in Jammu and Kashmir and one in Puducherry.

On Tuesday, leaders made last ditch efforts to woo voters in favour of their party candidates.

Jaitley agrees with Priyanka, says personal attacks should be avoided

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arun Jaitley on Wednesday said that attacks on the basis of corruption and honesty are not personal, but added that in politics, personal attacks should be avoided.

“I completely agree that there should not be any personal attacks. When issues of corruption and honesty are raised in the public domain, then, it is not a personal attack, but it is a political issue. Issues of probity in politics are public issues,” said Jaitley.

I can’t be Azam Khan and not follow EC’s order: Giriraj Singh

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Giriraj Singh, who has been banned by the Election Commission from campaigning in Bihar and Jharkhand for his highly inflammatory speeches, said Wednesday that he will follow the poll body’s directive, as he is not like Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan, who had refused to apologise for his hate speech.

“I am not Azam Khan, who has refused to abide by the law. If the EC has issued an order, then I will duly follow it,” said Singh.

SC forms panel over government advertisements

The Supreme Court Wednesday constituted a three member committee to frame guidelines to regulate issuance of advertisements by the government and its departments with an obvious political message.

The apex court bench headed by Chief Justice P. Sathasivam said that the existing DAVP guidelines do not cover such advertisements.

The three member committee would comprise N.R. Madhavan Menon, founder director of Bangalore’s National Law University, T.K. Vishwanathan, former Lok Sabha secretary general and senior counsel Ranjit Kumar.

Bihar third phase poll tomorrow

The third phase of Bihar Lok Sabha election in seven constituencies will be held tomorrow to decide the fate of 108 candidates, including BJP’s Shahnawaz Hussain, NCP General Secretary Tariq Anwar and former Union minister and RJD leader Mohammad Taslimuddin.

The seven constituencies going to poll – Supual, Araria, Kisanganj, Katihar, Purnia, Banka and Bhagalpur – are located in the Seemanchal area bordering Bangladesh and Nepal.
