India becomes largest market for WhatsApp with 48mln monthly active users

India is the largest market for the WhatsApp with 48 million monthly active users, the mobile messaging app spokesperson Neeraj Arora said.

According to a report by BGR India, Arora said there were 40 million monthly active users in India in February, meaning about four million new users a month.

WhatsApp has grown pretty big with Brazil, India, Mexico and Russia listed as countries with the fastest growth, CNET reports.

The messaging service was recently acquired by Facebook for 19 billion dollars.

Akhilesh, Mulayam reject reports of there being a BJP wave in the country

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Thursday rejected suggestions of there being any Modi wave in the country, and added that if it existed at all, it was only in Gujarat.

“There is no Modi wave in the country. It is present only in Gujarat. Therefore, there is no challenge for us, and in fact, we (the Samajwadi Party) are a challenge to others,” said Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Akhilesh Yadav said the BJP is trying to garner votes by playing communal politics.

People voting with hope for progress and peace

Armed with a court order, a joint team of Bihar and Jharkhand police raided the house of Bihar BJP leader Giriraj Singh today to arrest him for his alleged hate statements but could not find him.

“A team of Bokaro police and Patna police raided Giriraj Singh’s house around 5 AM in the morning to arrest him on the direction of a Bokaro court, which had issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against him but Singh was not found in the house,” City Superintendent of Police Jaykant told PTI.

US business delegation to visit India in November

A US business delegation will visit India later this year to explore increased business and investment opportunities in the country.

Two die in Pakistan blast

At least two people were killed and 15 injured Thursday when a bomb went off outside a shop in Pakistan’s port city of Karachi, media reported.

A suspended police officer, Shafique Tanoli, was sitting inside a shop with his friends when the bomb exploded outside it, Xinhua reported citing Dunya TV.

The blast happened near the old vegetable market area of the city at about 8.50 a.m.

The injured have been shifted to a nearby hospital.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

As many as 143 candidates are left in the fray for 10 Assembly seats and 23 for two Lok Sabha constituencies in Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh which will go to the polls on May 7.

On the final day of withdrawal of nominations today, 44 candidates opted out of race in Assembly seats and nine in Lok Sabha constituencies, election office sources said.

The two Lok Sabha seats – Kadapa and Rajampeta – have 14 and nine nominees respectively.

A strong earthquake measuring 6.7 struck late Wednesday off Canada’s Vancouver island in the Pacific, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake, which hit at 0310 GMT, was at a depth of 11.4km (7.1mi) and 94 km (58 miles) south of Port Hardy, Canada.

Indian-Americans numbering 3.34 million is the third largest Asian community in the United States, after China and Philippines, a report said.

The Indian-American population shot up 76 per cent in the first 12 years of the 21st century, a report on demographics of the Asian-American population released by the Center for American Progress said.

While the Chinese-Americans form the largest group of Asian-American population with 4.1 million (22 per cent), Filipinos-Americans are placed second with 3.59 million (19 per cent) followed by Indian-Americans with 3.34 million (18 per cent).

US deports Pakistani national for supporting terrorism

The US has deported a Pakistani national sentenced to three years in prison for providing material support to a foreign terrorist organisation.

Zahid Yousaf, 45, was put on a Karachi-bound commercial plane on April 16 and was handed over to Pakistani law enforcement agencies two days later, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a statement yesterday.

Yousaf pleaded guilty to a felony count of conspiracy for providing material support to a designated foreign terrorist organisation in federal court in September 2011.

CG personnel attacks fishermen
