Trinamool’s Sugata Bose worth over Rs.4.5 crore

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s grandnephew and Trinamool Congress candidate from West Bengal’s Jadavpur Sugata Bose co-owns an apartment and a car in the US while his total assets in both countries are worth over Rs.4.5 crore.

According to his affidavit filed before the Election Commission, the Harvard University history professor, assessable to income tax in the US, had an annual income of $171,547 equivalent to over Rs.1.02 crore in 2013.

TCS employees not allowed to vote, says MDMK; company denies charge

Tamil Nadu’s MDMK Thursday complained to the Election Commission against software major Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS) reportedly not allowing its employees to exercise their democratic right to vote. The company has denied the charge.

In his complaint to the poll body, MDMK’s Tiruvallur district secretary D.R.R. Senguttuvan said the TCS did not allow around 700 employees at its DLF IT Park office here to vote and forced them to work.

Modi files nomination from Varanasi

BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi Thursday filed his nomination papers for the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency, and paid tribute to the “Ganga Yamuna tehzeeb (composite culture)” of the city.

Accompanied by close aide Amit Shah, and party leaders Ravi Shankar Prasad and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Modi promised to improve the lot of the city’s Muslim weavers before filing his nomination.

Tendulkar celebrates 41st birthday by voting

Placing responsibility to nation uppermost, cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar Thursday cast his vote here before celebrating his 41st birthday.

Tendulkar voted in Mumbai’s North Central Lok Sabha constituency and tweeted later to his fans: “I have voted, have you? A wonderful start to my birthday, as a responsible citizen of our great nation.”

He also posted a photograph which shows him displaying his inked finger.

Woman election officer dies on duty in Thane

A woman returning officer died while on election duty Thursday at a polling station in Thane.

According to an election department official, 35-year-old Vaishali Bhave was on duty at the Khoppat polling station when she complained of chest pain around 1.30 p.m.

She was rushed to the Thane Civil Hospital where she was declared dead.

Bhave was the principal of New Bombay City High School at Koparkhairne suburb of Navi Mumbai in Thane district.

Clashes mar voting in Rajasthan as turnout crosses 47 percent

A clash between villagers and police that also left many media persons injured in Rajasthan’s Dausa marred voting even as over 47 percent of the eight million-plus electors cast their ballots till 3.30 p.m. in five constituencies in the state’s second and final phase of polling.

“Till 3.30 p.m., as per tentative information received, we have recorded 47.20 percent polling in these five constituencies,” an official told IANS.

Saudi Arabia reports 2 more deaths from MERS virus

Saudi Arabia’s health ministry says two more patients who became infected with a Middle East virus related to SARS have died, and that 13 others have contracted the virus.

The ministry said today that the new cases from the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus were reported in the capital of Riyadh, as well as in the western city of Jiddah and the Islamic holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

The deaths bring to 83 the number of people who have died in the kingdom since contracting the virus in September 2012. The kingdom has recorded a total of 285 confirmed cases.

Two cops killed in Yemen terror attack

Two policemen were killed early Thursday when suspected Al Qaeda gunmen raided a security outpost in Yemen’s southeastern province of Hadramout.

“The police forces repelled the Al Qaeda attack which took place in Hadramout’s city of Shibam, but two police personnel were killed in the exchange of fire with the attackers,” a military official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Another security source in Hadramout confirmed the incident, saying that “the Al Qaeda attackers fired two rocket-propelled grenades toward a key police checkpoint in Shibam city”.

Fatah, Hamas agree landmark pact to end seven-year violence

Fatah and Hamas, the two main rival Palestinian factions, have signed an accord to end seven years of violent division.

The signing of the accord also paves the way for elections later in the year and the formation of a unity government within weeks.

According to the Guardian, the move comes after a day of talks between Hamas and Fatah in Gaza that lasted until three hours.

The landmark pact also comes less than a week before the expiry of the deadline for US-sponsored peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority on 29 April, the report said.

UK asks Muslim women to help stop Syria Jihadists

Scotland Yard’s counter-terrorism chiefs today appealed to Muslim women in the UK to prevent their relatives from travelling to Syria to fight against President Bashar al-Assad’s regime after a rise in arrests related to the conflict was reported.

The campaign was launched after a rise in the number of Britons caught travelling or returning from war-torn Syria, from 25 arrests last year to 40 in the first three months of 2014 was reported.

Four districts of South Kashmir, where polling is being held on Thursday, observed a shut down following a call given by hardline Hurriyat Conference chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

YSR Congress leader Shobha Nagi Reddy dead

YSR Congress leader Bhuma Shobha Nagi Reddy, who was injured in a road accident late Wednesday, died at a private hospital here Thursday, party leaders said. She was 41.

She is survived by her husband, former parliamentarian Bhuma Nagi Reddy, two daughters and a son.

Shobha, who was YSR Congress candidate from Allagadda assembly constituency in Kurnool district, was critically injured when her car overturned Wednesday night near Allagadda, about 300 km from here.

The former legislator was shifted to a hospital in Hyderabad where she breathed her last around 11.05 am Thursday.

Four killed in Honduras plane crash

Four people were killed Wednesday when their small aircraft crashed and burst into flames near the western Honduran city of Gracias, the authorities said.

The accident occurred on the day President Juan Orlando Hernandez traveled to Gracias – his hometown – to inaugurate a new airport.

“Deeply moved for the victims of the air accident, may the presence of god be a balm for their families in these difficult moments,” the president said on Twitter after learning of the crash.

Debris found on Western Australia beach not from missing MH370

An unidentified object found on a beach in Western Australia is not associated with the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370.

It emerged late on Wednesday that debris were seen on a beach 10 kilometres east of Augusta, about 320km south of Perth and near Australia’s most southwestern tip.

According to news.com.au, a member of the public stumbled across the items, which were handed to Busselton police.

The man also sent photos to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) for examination.
