Rahul’s concern for poor for making headlines: Modi

Taking a jibe at Rahul Gandhi, BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi today claimed that the Congress Vice-President knew “nothing” about poverty and his concern for the poor was only to “make headlines”.

“Tourists go to the Taj Mahal and take snaps of their visit for posterity….Rahul Gandhi does exactly the same when he visits the poor, taking photojournalists and cameramen with him so that photographs and footage of his interaction with the poor can make headlines,” Modi told election meetings in Bihar.

TN Governor condoles death of Andhra MLA

Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah today condoled the death of Andhra Pradesh MLA Shobha Nagi Reddy, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a road accident.

In his condolence message to the victim’s husband, Bhuma Nagi Reddy, Rosaiah said he was ‘deeply shocked and grieved to hear about the sudden demise’ of his wife.

“Born in a political family she was known for her simplicity and had served for the cause of the upliftment of the people. Her death is an irreparable loss to the entire family members,” he was quoted saying in a Raj Bhavan statement.

Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee chief lauds Raju’s family

Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) Chief N Raghuveera Reddy said here today that union minister M M Pallam Raju’s family had rendered “valuable services” to Kakinada constituency for the last three decades.

Speaking at a Congress party function, he said that Pallam Raju’s grandfather M Pallam Raju served as a minister in the Congress and his son Sanjeeva Rao also worked hard to strengthen the party.

Earlier, Chiranjeevi too had praised M M Pallam Raju’s family for having strived to develop Kakinada constituency.

Cong will form first T-government: Jairam Ramesh

Union Minister Jairam Ramesh on Thursday claimed that the Congress party would form the first government of Telangana State.

Addressing a press conference here, Jairam Ramesh said that so far he had campaigned in 30 Assembly seat and the response to the Congress candidates has been tremendous. He said that the Congress would win 65-70 seats to form the government on its own. He also predicted that the Congress-led UPA would form the next government at the Centre.

Congress MLA to support TDP candidate for general elections

Former minister and sitting Congress MLA from Mydukur assembly constituency D L Ravindra Reddy instructed his followers to support Telugu Desam Party (TDP) nominee P Sudhakar Yadav for the coming elections, sources said.

Reddy who has been elected six times as MLA from the Mydukur constituency, held a meeting with his supporters at Duvvuru on Thursday and advised them to work for the victory of TDP candidate Sudhakar Yadav wholeheartedly and urged them to extend complete support to the TDP.

Selection of Khadim-ul-Hujjaj on April 26

The Qurrah (Draw of lots) for selection of 15 Khadim-ul-Hujjaj from the State will be held on 26th April at 3 PM at the office of the AP State Haj Committee, Haj House, Nampally Hyderabad.

A total of 18 Khadim-ul-Hujjaj will be selected to accompany the Haj pilgrims from the State. Three Khadim-ul-Hujjaj will be selected with two from the Haj Committee and one from the AP State Wakf Board.

Poll official killed, five injured in Kashmir guerrilla attack

One polling officer was killed and five others were injured Thursday in an attack by separatist guerrillas on a polling staff party in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district, police said.

A senior police officer told IANS that polling staff was returning in a bus to the district headquarters in Shopian district from Nagbal polling station when they were fired upon by separatist guerrillas.

Issue of malnutrition not included in manifestos: NGO

Despite every second child in India being malnourished, the issue of malnutrition does not find a mention in the manifestos of most of the political parties this election, a CRY analysis said Thursday.

NGO Child Rights and You (CRY), which analysed the manifestos of 10 major political parties including the Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Samajwadi Party (SP), said that only five parties have mentioned the issue in their manifestos.

After 8 years in jail, hotel manager’s killer freed as a juvenile

More than eight years after a boy was arrested for murdering a Shangri-la Hotel manager and convicted and sentenced for the crime in 2011, the Delhi High Court has ordered his release deeming him to be a juvenile “below the age of 18” at the time of the crime.

Justice Kailash Gambhir and Justice Sunita Gupta accepted the ossification test report submitted by medical board of AIIMS, conducted to determine the age of Anand Kishor, who claimed to be a juvenile at the time of crime. The report said Kishor’s present age is between 25-28.

US special envoy lands in Pakistan to discuss Afghanistan

US Special Envoy for Pakistan and Afghanistan James Dobbins has opened talks with Pakistani leaders on bilateral and regional issues, focusing on the situation in Afghanistan, officials here said Thursday.

It is Dobbins’s first visit to Pakistan after the April 5 presidential and parliamentary elections in Afghanistan, and officials said both sides would share thoughts about the post-NATO Afghanistan, Xinhua reported.

Four killed in attack on police vehicle in Pakistan

At least four policemen were killed when some unidentified gunmen opened fire at their vehicle in southwest Pakistan’s Balochistan province Thursday, media reported.

The police vehicle came under attack during a routine patrol in Shahenshah area of Dera Murad Jamali district, Xinhua reported citing Dunya TV.

The assailants fled the scene following the attack. Rescue teams shifted the bodies to a nearby hospital for autopsy. Meanwhile, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Clash in Rajasthan’s Dausa during voting, turnout nearly 60 percent

A clash between villagers and police that also left many media persons injured in Rajasthan’s Dausa marred voting even as nearly 60 percent of the eight million-plus electors cast their ballots in five constituencies in the state’s second and final phase of polling.

“As per our tentative information, 59.54 percent of voters had cast their votes till the closing hours at 6 p.m. This percentage might go up by small percentage when we come out with our final tally by tomorrow (Friday),” said an election department official.

Foundation laid for new govt at Centre: Modi

Fresh after filing his Lok Sabha nomination in Varanasi today, BJP leader and Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi here today claimed that people had laid the foundation of a new government to replace the UPA regime at the Centre.

“The foundation of a new government at the Centre has been laid by people, who have decided to oust the Congress-led government,” Modi said in an election speech in Bihar, coinciding with the the third phase of the polling today.

Envoy calls for resumption of Indo-Pak dialogue

Addressing a group of women journalists from the Indian Women Press Corps (IWPC), Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit pitched for the resumption of the dialogue process.

Basit stressed that he had come with a mandate from Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and that there is a national consensus in Pakistan for improving bilateral relations between the two nations.

Basit also said that Pakistan’s Government is committed to changing the bilateral narrative of conflict into that of cooperation and mutual trust.

Govt starts the process of bifurcation of AP

Government has initiated the process for bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh by the appointed day on June 2 when Telangana comes into existence.

The exercise for the distribution of assets, water and allocation of central cadre officers between the two states is in final stage and is expected to be completed soon.

Official sources said the expert committee, which was set up to recommend a site for the capital of successor state of Andhra Pradesh, will visit the Seemandhra region in the first week of May and have wide ranging discussions with all stake- holders.

Two-thirds electorate cast ballot in Chhattisgarh

Around two-thirds of the electorate in Chhattisgarh’s seven Lok Sabha constituencies cast their ballots Thursday in the third and final phase of election in the state, officials said.

About 66 percent voters exercised their franchise as the polling ended, election officials said.

Balloting was held at 14,474 polling booths in the seven constituencies of Sarguja, Raigadh, Janjgir-Champa, Korba, Bilaspur, Durg and Raipur.

Sarguja saw the highest voter turnout at 70 percent.

Polling was peaceful and no untoward incident was reported, officials said.

Five of family burnt to death in Delhi fire

Five members of a family were burnt to death under mysterious circumstances in their Zakir Nagar home here, police said Thursday.

Firoz, 35, who ran an embroidery stitching factory, his wife Yasmeen Parveen, 30, and their four children — Afroz, 12, Afreen, 11, and Asif, 7 — fell victim to a blaze that was first noticed by a neighbour when he saw smoke coming out of the house located in south Delhi in the wee hours of Thursday.

The police and the fire department were informed at about 1.30 a.m.

SC entrusts Padmanabhaswamy temple to five-member committee

The Supreme Court Thursday entrusted the administration of the Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple in Kerala to a five-member committee headed by the district judge of Thiruvananthapuram.

The court also said the keys of the temple vault holding its treasure would be handed over to the district judge.

The bench of Justice R.M. Lodha and Justice A.K. Patnaik said former comptroller and auditor general (CAG) Vinod Rai would undertake the audit of the temple accounts and properties.

Unlucky in the morning, sitting Bengal MPs finally vote in the evening

They are sitting MPs and belong to the family of Congress stalwart Ghani Khan Chowdhury – who never lost an election from Malda. But Abu Hasem Khan Choudhury and Mausam Benazir Noor had to wait for hours to cast their own votes.

Choudhury, contesting from Malda South and Benazir from Malda North, had demanded repolling after a faulty EVM prevented them from casting their votes. But the duo subsequently relented after being able to exercise their democratic rights later in the evening.

Congress demands FIR against Modi for poll code violation

The Congress Thursday demanded an FIR be lodged against BJP leader Narendra Modi, party workers and TV channels for poll code violation with the telecast of the Gujarat chief minister’s road show ahead of his filing his nomination from Varanasi.

Commerce Minister and Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma said an FIR should be lodged against Modi, BJP workers and the TV channels for violating the model code of conduct.

India may witness below normal monsoon rainfall

India is likely to witness below average monsoon rainfall in 2014 that will affect farm output and economic growth, the government’s weather office said Thursday.

Rainfall during the 2014 monsoon season (June to September) averaged over the country as a whole is likely to be 88 percent with a margin for error of plus or minus five percent of long period average, according to data released by the India Meteorological Department and Earth System Science Organization (ESSO).

70 percent polling in Tamil Nadu

Up to 70 percent electors voted Thursday in Tamil Nadu’s 39 Lok Sabha constituencies with the election coming to an end at 6 p.m., said the Election Commission.

According to election officials, voters already in the queue would be allowed to vote while nobody will be allowed to join the line new.

The polling percentage in the state stood at 70 percent out of over 55 million voters at 5 p.m. The poll officials said the final voting percentage would be known latter.

There are 845 contestants belonging to political parties and independents in the fray.

Jharkhand registers 63.55 percent voting

The third and final round of polling in Jharkhand witnessed a good turnout of voters as the state registered 63.55 percent voting Thursday.

“Overall ballot percentage in Jharkhand in the third and final phase of poll is 63.55 percent. The polling output in Dumka and Dhanbad was 64 percent and 62 percent respectively,” Jharkhand Chief Election Commissioner P.K. Jajorioa told reporters.

Long queues of voters were seen in Dumka, Pakur, Dhanbad, Deoghar and other places.
