4 killed, 30 injured in blast in Karachi’s Delhi Colony

Four persons were killed and 30 others injured when a powerful bomb exploded outside a mosque in Karachi’s Delhi Colony today, minutes after Friday prayers.

The bomb was planted in a rickshaw which was parked near the mosque, police official Khaliq Sheikh said.

Ten kgs of explosives were used in the attack, IG Sindh Iqbal Mahmood told reporters at the blast site.

“It was definitely targeted,” he said.

“Just before the blast a bus carrying passengers was on way to a Imambargah (Shia Muslim praying place) and they could have been the target of the attack,” he told reporters.

Malakpet residents peeved with public representatives

Malakpet houses an old graveyard and a dargah whose desecration is continued for years. Hazrat Mahboob Bibi Saheba graveyard which is located at Malakpet main road near Masjid Idara-e-Milia, has a garbage bin at its entrance, which is always overflowing with garbage. The iron gate at the entrance has an iron arch with ‘Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem’ painted on it. Despite repeated representations the authorities have turned blind eye towards the garbage bin.

North Korea will gain “nothing” by making threats, US President Barack Obama said on Friday, warning it of sanctions with “more bite” if it went ahead with a fourth nuclear test.

Speaking in South Korea as satellite images revealed the North could be preparing for another test, Obama stressed that Washington and Seoul stood “shoulder to shoulder” in their refusal to accept a nuclear North Korea.

Repolling in five booths in UP

Repolling will be held at five polling stations of Firozabad and Etawah Lok Sabha constituencies as the Election Commission (EC) has received complaints about booth capturing and intimidation during the election, officials said Saturday.

Several complaints were sent to the poll panel about bogus voting and booth capturing during the election held Thursday, especially in the belt of Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Following the complaints, the EC has sent observers to asses the situation in the constituencies.

A white and black cat spotted in Ramsgate, Kent, has become a dead ringer for late Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler.

According to the Daily Star, the cat has a white face with a black mark above its lip, which looks like a small moustache, and also has a black patch that cover a part of its forehead, which looks like a side-parting.

A resident of the area, Keith Ross, who was the one to notice the cat and take its picture, said that he always believed cats to be evil, but this one’s resemblance to the late dictator confirms it. (ANI)

Delhi HC orders acquiring of sites for landfill

The Delhi High Court Friday, directing the state land and building department (LBD) to start acquiring seven sites identified to dump the city’s daily garbage, also sought a status report detailing steps taken in this regard.

Justice G.S. Sistani told the LBD that the court appointed committee has identified seven landfill sites and it should begin the process of acquiring these sites.

Expressing strong displeasure at years of delay in identification and acquisition process because of various roadblocks, the court asked government to expedite the process.

China concerned over US-Japan joint statement

China Friday expressed grave concerns over a joint statement released by the US and Japan, urging the two countries to discard their “Cold War mindset” and respect the interests and concerns of other countries in the region.

A senior official of China’s foreign ministry met US Ambassador to China and Japanese Ambassador to China respectively to lodge solemn representations over the joint statement, Xinhua quoted ministry’s spokesperson Qin Gang saying in a press release Friday night.

Japanese PM to visit EU

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will visit the European Union (EU) May 7, a day before the Victory in Europe Day of the World War II, the EU announced Friday.

During his one-day visit, Abe will meet the President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy and the President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso, Xinhua reported.

BJP promises to extend Seemandhra’s special status to 10 years

Andhra Pradesh: BJP today promised to extend from five years to ten years the special status to Seemandhra region after bifurcation, senior leader M Venkaiah Naidu said in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh.

“If our prime ministerial candidate and BJP win the elections and Modi is elected the Prime Minister, the special status to the residuary Andhra Pradesh will be extended to ten years,” Mr Naidu, who is campaigning for BJP-TDP candidates in east Godavari district, said during a road show.

EC surveillance team seizes Rs.8 crores in poll-bound Andhra Pradesh

A surveillance team of the Election Commission has confirmed the seizure of Rs. eight crores in cash from a person who was travelling in a public vehicle in the Shamshabad area of poll-bound Andhra Pradesh.

The person was travelling in a city bus with the huge amount of cash. The seized cash has been reported to income tax officials. EC officials said the person is being questioned about the source and the destination of the cash.

Seventeen Lok Sabha seats will go to polls in Andhra Pradesh on April 30.

Toll rises to 33 in Iraq election rally bombing

At least 33 people were killed and 90 others wounded in a series of bombing attacks at a parliamentary election rally in Iraq’s capital city of Baghdad Friday, an interior ministry source said.

The three back-to-back attacks — one roadside bomb and two car bombs — struck as supporters of the Sadiqun bloc, the political wing of Iraqi Shiite Islamist group Asaeb Ahel al-Haq, were holding a parliamentary election rally near a sports club in eastern Baghdad, Xinhua quoted the source as saying.

The death toll in the South Korea ferry sinking disaster rose to 187 Saturday morning, but search operations slowed amid faster tidal currents and worse weather conditions.

Only two more bodies were recovered from the sunken vessel overnight, raising the death toll to 187. A total of 115 people are still missing, with the number of those rescued remaining unchanged at 174 since the first day of the sinking disaster, Xinhua reported.
