TRS chief K Chandra Shekhar Rao slammed BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi he said that there is no Modi wave in the country and BJP will be wiped out from Telangana.

Activist and celebrity transgender Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi was lucky to have found acceptance from her parents and yet feels the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment recognising a “third gender” restored her dignity – and safeguarded that of future generations of the so-called hijra or eunuch community in India.

“It is a wonderful judgment and has brought back my dignity and safeguarded dignity of the future generations of the transgender community,” Tripathi, an activist of international repute who works for the community through her campaign group Astitva,. told IANS.

Omar urges people of Jammu and Kashmir to come out and vote

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah sought greater participation from the people of the state in the remaining phases of the Lok Sabha polls saying he is “not accountable” to those who stayed away from the democratic exercise.

“The only people who suffer from the boycott are the voters. Because the only way you can get the accountability is by participating. When you vote you can demand accountability, when you don’t vote then who are you accountable to,” Omar told reporters at the sidelines of a function here.

FIRs against Ramdev for his remarks against Rahul

Two separate FIRs were filed today against yoga guru Ramdev, one of them by Uttar Pradesh police, for his controversial remarks that Rahul Gandhi visited Dalits’ homes for honeymoon.

“An FIR has been lodged against Baba Ramdev at Mahanagar police station under relevant section 171(g) (false statement in connection with an election) of IPC,” Additional Superintendent of Police Habibul Hassan told PTI in Lucknow.

The FIR was lodged by police after analysing the video clipping of Ramdev’s statement made yesterday.

Rupee will get stronger after NDA comes to power: Swamy

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy on Saturday said rupee will appreciate to Rs 35 per dollar from over Rs 61 in the next two years if NDA comes to power.

Russia urges US to assist release of protests in Ukraine

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov Saturday urged the US to assist in the release of protest leaders arrested in southeastern Ukraine.

Lavrov, during a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State John Kerry, emphasised the necessity to de-escalate the situation in Ukraine, “firstly to cease the military operation against protest participants and stop aggressive actions of radical nationalists of the Right Sector,” Xinhua quoted the foreign ministry as saying in a statement published on its website.

Heat wave forces Odisha to close schools

With the mercury crossing 43 degrees Celsius in many parts of Odisha, the state government Saturday ordered the closure of all government and private schools from May 1.

“Examinations are over in all schools and morning classes are being held now. All schools will break for summer vacation from May 1. The colleges will break for summer vacation May 9,” special relief commissioner P.K. Mohapatra told reporters.

As many as 17 stations Saturday recorded temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius and above.

Seven stations crossed the 43 degrees Celsius mark.

Egypt on alert after first MERS case detected

Egyptian health ministry said Saturday that it discovered the first case of the SARS-like Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) virus in an Egyptian man back from Saudi Arabia.

The 27-year-old patient took a medical examination Friday in a Cairo hospital, Xinhua quoted the ministry as saying in a statement. It added that the man was in a stable condition now.

Saudi Arabia has been severely hit by the MERS virus, as over 300 such cases have been reported and 92 people died since April, 2012.

Motorsports: MEL second round cancelled

22 killed in attacks in Iraq

At least 22 people were killed and 35 others wounded in attacks across Iraq Saturday, police and medical sources said.

A civilian was killed and 10 others wounded in a roadside bomb attack at a popular restaurant in al-Naser district, east of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, Xinhua quoted a police source as saying.

In a separate incident, a roadside bomb struck a police patrol in Saidiyah district in the southern part of Baghdad, killing a policeman and wounding five others, the source said.
