Harish Rao threatens defamation suit against Pawan Kalyan

TRS senior leader T Harish Rao on Sunday threatened to file a defamation suit against cine star and Jana Sena Party chief Pawan Kalyan.

Pawan Kalyan had earlier alleged that Harish Rao was having business relationship with former PCC chief Botsa Satyanarayana in his cable network business. However, Harish Rao made it clear that he never had any business transactions with Botsa and was in no way related to his business activities. He asked Pawan Kalyan to prove the allegations within 24 hours or face a defamation suit.

Congress will form government in both states: Jairam

Union Minister Jairam Ramesh on Sunday claimed that the Congress party would form the next government in both Telangana and residuary State of Andhra Pradesh.

In an information chat with reporters at Gandhi Bhavan, Jairam Ramesh said that the party has been receiving tremendous response from all sections of the society and therefore, its candidates would win with a comfortable majority in both the regions. He said that only Congress party could bring development in both the regions.

Who is providing the funds for helicopter, CPI-M asks Mamata

Targeting Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee, the CPI-M Sunday asked her to spell out the source of funds which has enabled her to use a helicopter in the Lok Sabha election campaign.

“We are running around as much as possible. But how is the Trinamool affording helicopter? Who is providing the funds?” Communist Party of India-Marxist politburo member Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee told an election rally in this town of Nadia district.

Re-polling ends peacefully in Bihar

Re-polling at 30 polling stations in Bihar ended peacefully Sunday with a voter turnout of 55 percent, an official said.

State’s Additional Chief Electoral Officer R. Lakshman said the re-polling started at 7 a.m. and ended peacefully at 6 p.m.

He said re-polling at 22 polling stations was held in Katihar parliamentary constituency from where Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) general secretary and Minister of State for Agriculture Tariq Anwar is pitted against the BJP’s Nikhil Kumar Choudhary.

Pakistan-TTP should focus on talks not ceasefire

A member from the Taliban negotiating committee said Sunday that the Pakistan government and the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) should focus on the peace talks rather than on a ceasefire.

Maulana Samiul Haq, chief Taliban mediator, said that those talking about military action were “enemies of Pakistan” and war benefited no one, Dawn online reported.

Haq also accused the media of advocating war.

Trinamool MP’s ‘development for votes’ speech under scanner

The Election Commission Sunday said it had sought a report from the Birbhum district magistrate on Trinamool Congress MP and Bengali actress Satabdi Roy’s address at a rally, where she said that priority for development will be given to those areas from which she corners the maximum number of votes.

Officer on special duty in the CEO’s office Amit Ray Chaudhury said the district magistrate has been asked to submit the recordings of the address and a detailed report.

New CJI favours wider dialogue to select judges

New Chief Justice of India Rajendra Mal Lodha Sunday said in the appointment of judges he favoured much wider consultations involving judges outside the collegium and senior members of the bar of the respective high courts.

Speaking to the media after taking oath, the CJI said he was writing to chief justices of high courts to involve three more senior most judges outside the collegium and three senior most lawyers of impeccable integrity in the process.

Sunrisers batsmen Warner, Finch reprimanded

Andhra to challenge acquittal of accused in Dalits massacre case

Andhra Pradesh will challenge in the Supreme Court an order of the state high court acquitting all 56 accused in Dalits massacre case, said state police chief B. Prasada Rao.

The director general of police told reporters here Sunday that the state will soon file a special leave petition (SLP) against the high court judgment.

The high court on April 22 set aside an order of a special court, which had sentenced 21 people to life imprisonment and 35 others to one year’s jail for 1991 massacre of Dalits in Guntur district.

Iraqis abroad vote for upcoming general elections

Iraqi nationals living abroad voted Sunday ahead of the general elections in the countrfy scheduled for April 30 amid threats from Al Qaeda linked militants to disrupt the polls.

The members of the Iraqi security forces will cast their votes Monday in order to be free to guard polling stations on the election day, Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) said.

The IHEC has opened polling centres and stations in 13 countries, including the US.

118 people jailed for pyramid ring scam in China

A court in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region Sunday awarded varying sentences to 118 people for their involvement in a pyramid fund raising scam.

The defendants, including leaders and major members of the pyramid scheme, were awarded jail terms by the Nanning intermediate people’s court of varying duration between seven months and 10 years for organising pyramid selling activities, Xinhua reported.

Surveillance court snubs Verizon’s challenge to NSA’s phone data collection program

Verizon’s attempt to challenge the NSA’s phone call surveillance program ended in disappointment as the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) ultimately ruled against the telecom giant.

According to PC World, Verizon filed a legal motion against the NSA’s phone records collection program in January-the first time a company took legal action against the NSA’s surveillance program, declassified government documents have revealed.

The court ruling stated that there is no actual expectation of privacy in the phone numbers people dial.

P.H Parekh, a lawyer in the Supreme Court said on Sunday that while the new Chief Justice of India R M Lodha was addressing media persons he saw that a fire broke out in his own chamber and that there was no knowledge of how to tame it using fire extinguisher. “I have Chamber no 134. I was attending the party of our new chief justice. When I came back I saw that my chamber was in fire. People here did not know how to open the fire extinguisher. Something must have been burnt. I can confirm you that only after taking a look. Short circuit is not a probability.

In touch with CBI over red corner notice against MP: Andhra police

Andhra Pradesh Police have received a red corner notice against Rajya Sabha member K.V.P.Ramachandra Rao in the titanium bribery case but since it is not accompanied by a warrant, they are in touch with the CBI, said the state police chief B.Prasada Rao.

Director General of Police (DGP) Prasada Rao told the reporters here Sunday that the Crime Investigation Department (CID) received the red corner notice from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is the nodal agency of the Interpol in the country.
