Lok Sabha polls: 89 seats in 7th phase to go to polls tomorrow

Eighty-nine Lok Sabha seats spread over seven states and two Union Territories will go to polls in this phase on Wednesday.

These include all 26 seats in Gujarat, and all 13 in Punjab; 17 seats in Andhra Pradesh, 14 in Uttar Pradesh, nine in W. Bengal , seven in Bihar and one each in Jammu and Kashmir and Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.

President approves dissolution of AP Assembly

President Pranab Mukherjee has given his approval for the dissolution of the Andhra Pradesh Assembly and a fresh proclamation of central rule in the state.

The Union Cabinet on Friday recommended dissolution of Andhra Pradesh assembly and extension of the President’s rule there beyond 30 April.

This decision was taken after a report was submitted by the Andhra Pradesh governor E.S.L. Narasimhan to the centre about the prevailing situation in the state.

The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Karnataka accepts Kasturirangan report to stop mining, but not quarrying, sand mining

Karnataka on Sunday said it has accepted the Kasturirangan committee report on the Western Ghats to stop mining but said it would not stop quarrying and sand mining in the ecologically sensitive area.

“We have accepted the recommendation to stop mining in Western Ghats but disagreed to stop quarrying and sand mining in the ecologically-sensitive Western Ghats,” Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandhra told reporters here.

Warm day ahead in Delhi

It was a pleasant Tuesday morning here with the minimum temperature recorded two notches below the season’s average at 22.6 degrees Celsius. The Met Office has forecast a warm day.

“The sky will be clear with the maximum temperature likely to hover around 40 degrees Celsius,” said an official of the India Meteorological Department.

Humidity at 8.30 a.m. was 35 percent.

Monday’s maximum temperature was recorded a notch below the season’s average at 39.5 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature was three notches below the season’s average at 21 degrees Celsius.

UNSC strengthens support for security sector reform

The UN Security Council (UNSC) Monday adopted a resolution to strengthen its support for the security sector reform in countries emerging from conflict, and assist them to prioritise the development of the sector.

The 15-member body unanimously adopted the first-ever stand- alone resolution on security sector reform after a day-long debate chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, which holds the Council’s April presidency, Xinhua reported.

US court dismisses 1984 riots case against Congress

A US court has dismissed a lawsuit against India’s Congress party relating to the November 1984 anti-Sikh violence, saying it did not sufficiently “touch and concern” the US court to exercise jurisdiction.

However, even as he dismissed the case filed by the US based rights group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), Judge Robert W. Sweet of US District Court here ruled that corporate entities like the Congress party of India can be sued under Alien Torts Statute (ATS).

Fire breaks out in PMO

A fire broke out Tuesday morning in a room of the Prime Minister’s Office here. There was no damage or injury reported, an official said.

“There was a short circuit in a computer UPS in the PMO’s room in South Block, which triggered off a smoke detector. The fire alarm went off and fire service reached the spot,” said an official in the PMO.

Turkish protesters break into Egyptian consulate in Istanbul

Some Turkish demonstrators broke into the Egyptian consulate in Istanbul Monday night when hundreds of them were protesting against an Egyptian court’s earlier decision to sentence some 683 Muslim Brotherhood supporters to death.

Over 1,000 demonstrators staged protests in the front of the consulate. Five of them climbed on the wall of the building and two jumped into the consulate yard. They were detained by security guards, Xinhua quoted a witness as saying.

“I did not compromise with the enemies of Islam” – Farhath Khan

Ukraine to get one bn euro loan from EU

The European Commission agreed Monday to supply a new tranch of 1-billion-euro (about $1.38 billion) loan to Ukraine, to help the country reduce short-term balance of payments and fiscal vulnerabilities.

The new Macro-Financial Assistance (MFA) is part of the package to support Ukraine and was approved by the EU Council of Ministers April 14, Xinhua reported.

The disbursement of the assistance will be conditional on specific economic policy conditions which focus on public finance management and anti-corruption.

Middle East peace deadline expires

A US deadline for peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians has come to an end without the two side reaching any agreement, BBC reported Monday.

Direct talks had resumed in July after a three-year hiatus but quickly became strained.

The latest round was halted last week following the main Palestinian factions announcement of a political pact.

US Secretary of State John Kerry, who brokered the talks, has meanwhile issued a statement denying he called Israel “an apartheid state”.

Mexican army begins disarming vigilantes

The Mexican army has started registering the weapons carried by vigilantes in the western state of Michoacan, BBC reported Monday.

The registration exercise has begun nearly four months after the “self-defence groups” launched an offensive against the Knights Templar drug cartel.

The vigilantes will be allowed to keep their weapons, but will be banned from publicly carrying assault rifles.

Most of the drug cartel leaders in Michoacan state have been killed or arrested since this January.

German diplomat injured escaping kidnapping in Yemen

A German diplomat was injured while escaping an apparent kidnapping bid by unidentified gunmen in the Yemeni capital of Sana’a Monday, an interior ministry official said.

The gunmen driving a car tried to intercept the German diplomat’s vehicle on a road near the German embassy in Hadda area, the capital’s heavily-secured diplomatic hub, Xinhua reported.

The diplomat and his driver refused to stop and sped away as the gunmen opened fire and slightly injured the diplomat, the official said. The would-be kidnappers fled the area.

New Zealand to raise defence expenditure

The New Zealand government is to increase defence spending by 100.9 million NZ dollars (about $86 million) over the 2014-2015 financial year in the first of four annual staged increases in funding for the military, Xinhua reported..

Defence Minister Jonathan Coleman said Tuesday the first stage of an allocation of 535.5 million NZ dollars ($456 million) in new funding over the next four years would be included in the government Budget to be published next month.

The investment would address a long-term funding gap for the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF), Coleman said in a statement.

Explosive device blast kills serviceman in Ukraine

One Ukrainian serviceman has been killed and another injured, when an improvised explosive device went off at a military base in the country’s east, the defence ministry said in a statement Monday.

The blast occurred, when two soldiers of the Ukrainian army were conducting an inspection of engineering obstacles at the base in Donetsk region, Xinhua quoted the ministry’s press service as saying in a statement.

he injured serviceman was rushed to hospial in a serious condition, it said.

US troops arrive at Estonian air base for exercise

A total of 150 soldiers from the US 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team arrived Monday at the Estonian Amari air base near its capital city of Tallinn, local media said.

Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves went to the air base to receive the soldiers, accompanied by the US Ambassador to Estonia Jeffrey Levine and an Estonian Scouts Battalion company, Xinhua reported.

The soldiers will participate in major annual spring exercises, reports said.

Media reported that same amounts of the US airborne soldiers had also arrived in Poland, Lithuania and Latvia.
