BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi Tuesday appealed to voters to ensure his party’s victory in 300 Lok Sabha constituencies, but his use of Kargil hero Vikram Batra’s oft-quoted phrase “yeh dil maange more” sparked a controversy with Batra’s parents and the Congress raising objections.

Modi later defended his use of the phrase at a 3D rally held a few hours later saying he would “rather leave politics than insult our martyrs and their parents”.

‘Agriculture project helped farmers’ income reach Rs.200,000′

The National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP) has led to an increase in the annual income of farmers in 500 villages in India from Rs.15,000 to Rs.200,000, an official said here Tuesday.

NAIP director Rama Rao said the project has further created a Rs.150 crore horticulture market owned by erstwhile street flower vendors by helping them use technological innovation to increase the usability of flowers from a day to three days.

He was defending his use of Batra’s oft-quoted phrase “Yeh dil maange more” to appeal for 300 Lok Sabha seats at a rally in Himachal Pradesh’s Palampur, the hometown of Captain Batra.

Addressing a 3D rally using holographic technique, Modi said: “I talked about Vikram Batra with due respect but later I got to know that my political adversaries made an issue out of it. I was very upset.”

Court notice to Tihar jail on Bhatkal’s condition

A court here Tuesday directed officials of Delhi’s Tihar jail to provide all facilities to Indian Mujahideen co-founder Yasin Bhatkal who has claimed he was being treated “even worse than an animal”.

According to sources, District Judge I.S. Mehta of the Patiala House court issued notice to the Tihar jail superintendent to file a reply on an application moved by Bhatkal.

The Indian Mujahideen co-founder and his associate Assadullah Akhtar were presented in the court during an in-chamber hearing in a case filed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Royals make 152/5 against Knight Riders

The Rajasthan Royals put up a total of 152/5 after electing to bat against the Kolkata Knight Riders in an Indian Premier League clash at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium here Tuesday.

The family of Kargil martyr Captain Vikram Batra has taken exception to the repeated reference of his name and the slogan “Yeh Dil Maange More” (this heart yearns more), by BJP’s prime ministerial hopeful Narendra Modi.

During his rallies in Palampur, home town of Batra, Mandi and Solan, Modi used Batra’s name and “Yeh Dil Maange More”, a popular advertising slogan Batra had said before he died in the Kargil war, to strike a chord with the masses here.

Delhi’s power demand to reach 6,100 MW in June

Demand for power in the capital might shoot up to 6,100 MW this summer, surpassing all previous records, a Delhi government official said Tuesday.

“Delhi is anticipating a peak demand of 6,100 MW in the first fortnight of June and power distribution companies have made adequate arrangements to meet the anticipated peak demand,” said Principal Secretary (Power) Arun Goyal.

The city is reeling under intense heat which has led to high demand of power.

In the summer of 2013, the power demand rose to 5,653 MW.

“The chief minister, the government, are all trying to shield those in the know,” Ghosh said, interacting with reporters when he was produced in the court during the day.

Ghosh said he met Sen at the Alipore Central Jail on three consecutive days starting April 10.

6 injured, gunman dead in FedEx warehouse shooting in US

A gunman Tuesday injured six people at a FedEx warehouse in the US state of Georgia before killing himself, local media reported.

Police were informed at around 5:54 a.m. about a man firing indiscriminately at the suburban facility in Kennesaw, about 40 km north of Atlanta, and one of those injured was in critical condition, Xinhua cited the report as saying.

The man later fatally shot himself.

“The suspect in this case is deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound,” the police said.

A FedEx spokesman said the company was cooperating with authorities.

EC partially relaxes order on Punjab minister Majithia’s movement

The Election Commission (EC) Tuesday partially relaxed the ban imposed on the movement of Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia in Amritsar parliamentary constituency.

The EC, which had Monday ordered that Majithia would not be allowed to move anywhere in the Amritsar parliamentary constituency except for his polling station, has reconsidered its order, Punjab chief electoral officer V.K. Singh said Tuesday.

Former militant, three others injured in Kashmir attack

A former militant was critically injured when a separatist guerrilla fired at him when he was travelling in a bus in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district Tuesday, police said. Three other passengers were also injured.

Police said a guerrilla travelling in the vehicle from Pattan town got down at Sangrama on the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road in Baramulla and immediately fired at Abdul Khaliq Dar, an ex-militant travelling in the same vehicle.

SC told names of 26 with Liechtenstein bank accounts

The government Tuesday disclosed to the Supreme Court the names of 26 people who had accounts in banks in Liechtenstein, revealed to India by German authorities.

A bench of Justice H.L.Dattu, Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai and Justice Madan B. Lokur were given these names by Solicitor General Mohan Parasaran in two sealed covers having 18 and 8 names respectively.

All eyes on Lok Sabha polls in Gujarat

The stage is set for polling in all the 26 Lok Sabha constituencies in Gujarat, and the fortunes of a number of bigwigs, including BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and several Congress union ministers, shall be sealed Wednesday.

36 killed in car bomb explosion in Syria

At least 36 people were killed and 85 others injured Tuesday when a car bomb exploded in Syria’s central province of Homs, a media report said.

Most of those killed in the explosion at the Abbasiyeh roundabout in the al-Zahra district of Homs were women and children, SANA news agency reported.

Earlier Tuesday, 14 students were killed and 50 injured when mortar shells hit a religious school in Damascus’s central district of Shaghour.

Syria’s Al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front militant group has been accused of both the attacks.

Digvijay rejects idea of Cong supporting Third Front

“The tail cannot wag the body, the body can wag the tail,” Congress leader Digvijay Singh said today rejecting the idea of extending outside support to a Third Front to form government to stop Narendra Modi.

Talking to reporters, Singh insisted that the dominant political party should lead the government for greater stability and effective functioning of any coalition arrangement.
